I have a quick question concerning gun shows. At a gun show do they run background checks? I went to one the other day and noticed how fast a man purchased a gun. Also what about for handguns. Can you buy a handgun at a gun show if you have an out of state license?

If it's a FFL selling the gun, yep, they run a background check. If it's a private sale, probably not. No, you can not buy a handgun at a gun show in a state other than where you live, unless you arrange for the seller to ship it to a FFL in your state. Or if it's a C & R handgun, and you are a C & R Licensee.

Thank you for your answer. One more question concerning out of state licenses. Does that apply to military?

If you're in the military, if I recall correctly, if you show a copy of your orders showing you were deployed to that state, you'd be able to buy guns in the state you're stationed in just like if you were in your home state. You're in most aspects seen as a resident of the state as a matter of the military sending you there for a tour of duty in that location.

I was under the impression that you actually had to be an FFL to be able to do a background check.

Is that not true?

This is true, I have personally done this. With a set of PCS orders for the duty station, you should have no problems.

To use the NICS system, you have to be an FFL.

At least in Texas if you have a CFL after filling out all the paperwork you leave with the gun takes about 10 minutes at the most. Gun shows or a gun store.

With a CFL the background check has already been done by the State.
