Going to a wedding in El Paso - should I carry?

Yes. Among other things they had gun fire hitting city hall the other day. The problem ain't just in Arizona.

I would say carry the largest handgun you can comfortably carry and bring a extra reload or two.

We have a large presence in El Paso and according to the folks who work for me, it used to be ok, even up to the last year. It used to be "don't go to stupid places, with stupid people, & do stupid things" but now, according to them, they are more aware of the tension and bad things have been happening, although no where as bad as the stuff across the border.

What ever you do, DO NOT go to Juarez.

He's going to Texas. It would be illegal is anyone saw it. Texas is not a free state, yet.

Why would there be any question? If it is legal for you to carry ... CARRY!

I would say a lot depends on your alcohol consuption, if any. Firearm's on primises would be another matter.

Open carry in Texas in illegal. Concealed carry is legal if you have a CCW in a state that has reciprocity with Texas. Piece of advice, if you go to Texas regularly or even infrequently like I do, spend a day and go to a qualified range and get your permit. It only takes a one day training class to qualify. Even though I live in a state that has reciprocity with Texas I figure the more training I get the better. Besides, learning the laws in the states you visit can't hurt.

Should I carry? Only if it is a formal affair and you have a BBQ/wedding gun. Remember that "court guns" are not Appropriate for formal affairs.

I am a resident in texas, and my ccw is pending (they wanted better photos of me) but I think it is not legal to carry in a church. I will check again if I get a chance but I am pretty sure places or worship are a no no.

A small side note if I am wrong then I suggest that you carry. With a back up mag.

I'd make sure I'm legal to carry, because you have immigration stop points in and out of El Paso, especially on IH 10. Juarez is a very large city that for most parts until recently is a part of the Metro El Paso area. I've only driven through El Paso, but I don't think I'd care to live there because of the proximity to Juarez.

Far too true, at least in public spaces. Or for publicly-accessible ones. Were the wedding and/or reception on purely private property, one would only need the property owner's permission to BBQ-carry.

We have some down-right goofy laws on this in my state. A person can OC while fishing or hunting, except if they have a CHL--maybe. It could be you could keep your K-22 with snake shot, but not your CCW--again, maybe.

El Paso is the second safest city in the USA. You should avoid some areas, as in any city.

The extreme violence south of the border has not affected the City of El Paso.
I have a carry permit, but carry only occasionally because I'm concerned about possible collateral damage.

El Paso City Hall took a few nearly spent rounds, fired from Juarez, possibly by Mexican LEO in a shootout with a BG. No injuries were sustained in City Hall. That's the only time in the seven years I've lived here that El Paso received gunfire from across the border. It's much more dangerous in Chicago or Detroit, to name just a couple.

I certainly would not go to El Paso unarmed.

Absolutely carry AFTER checking the reciprocity of the state you are licensed in. Texas is a concealed-carry state as mentioned and concealed means concealed.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no way out of El Paso without going through a checkpoint. I know Laredo cannot be exited without going through one. Funny short story....while visiting Laredo recently, my gf was driving when we left and was a little nervous of going through the checkpoint. We both produced ID when asked and the officer checked them, laughed and said "that'll work!" and wished us a good trip. Once underway again my gf asked me to put her license back in her purse....turns out she had handed the officer her CHL instead of her drivers license!

I'm assuming you are considering carrying for your personal safety and not because the groom/bride may try to run away?

If you plan on drinking at the wedding, then do not carry a weapon.

Why do folks need to ask if they should carry? Carry at all times if it is legal for you to do so in the location you are at. I don't carry in cop shops or government buildings or any other location where it is illegal for me to do so. But everywhere else is a no-brainer.

Trouble isn't going to make an appointment to meet with me, so, I should just be ready for any surprise visits.
