Just got a new Knife

Why don't you tell us?

Seeing that it's made in China, and there are no specs given on type of steel or anything, it's all a question mark. And at that price, I'd call it a 'beater' and treat it as such.

Give it a field test and write us a report.
 
$15 knife...

TC Snake--Well, the printing under the pic you supplied about says it all. A $15 Chinese-made knife would, I expect, not have the finest steel, nor the finest heat treatment, in the world, but it could possibly surprise you.

Try sharpening it. Try using the heck out of it. If it holds an edge, and is easy to sharpen, then you got yourself a gem. If not, well, you haven't exactly lost yr shirt, and for your next knife you might try something of a little higher quality.

And if you DO discover that you have a gem, for Petes' sake let us all know!!

$15? Follow Smokey Joe's advice and let us know of you stumbled across a treasure or paid for trash.
 
Anyone know anything about the Ontario knife company in general? last I heard they were awarded the millitary Ka-Bar Manufacturing contracts and also sold high volume to Cabellas. Are there Products worthwhile? It would also seem that these knives fly off the shelves whenever available. I'll be sure to share my own Experiences with the one Im getting (I haven't Received it yet).
 
Ontario knives...

TC Snake--Only thing I know about Ontario Knife Co. is that they bought out Old Hickory knives, years ago. OH's used to say on the blade, "Shapleigh's Hammer Forged 1843." When they started saying "Ontario Knife Co." instead, the quality of the knives went down. That was when the fake "hammer marks" became really prominent, too.

I have 2 or 3 of the old ones, and a couple of the new ones, also. Steel in the old ones is better--thinner blade, but just as sturdy, easier to sharpen, and holds an edge better. I have no idea as to the technical details involved.

The sharpest commercial knife I own is an old OH which is my dedicated fine-detail skinning knife.

When I find a "Shapleigh's" OH @ a garage sale I snap it up. The "Ontario" OH's aren't bad, you understand, they just aren't as good. I'd probably buy one of those @ a garage sale, too.

Update

Just recieved an E-mail that this item is no longer in stock. Too bad, would have liked to have seen the quality up close.

Its ok I now have a newfound itch to buy a knife modeled after the Fearsome Commanche "scalper" blades of the old west. Wish me luck!
 
Ontario is a long standing and well respected knife company (except for the brush up over the RAT knives). They make a quality product.

BTW, that knife is posted as out of stock in the first dozen places google provides.

As to a "scalper" you should just purchase an Old Hickory wood handled butcher knife since there's no specific knife that was a scalper.

Does that term make anyone else twitch?

Any more, I find I have to exert a degree of will in order to consider an essentially ordinary knife with "tactical" in its name.

More so if the name combines common sporting activities with that term.

Tactical Hunting
Tactical Camping
Tactical Climbing

Could be worse, I guess. Tactical Woodworking.

I picked up one of those Old Hickory knives shortly after Ontario bought them out. And while the quality was not as good as the original Old Hickory knives, it's still been a very decent blade for the money.
 
OH knives...

Bannockburn--Glad someone else besides me remembers back to when OH got bought out! Usually when I mention that the response is, "Must'a' been before my time; never knew OH was anything other than Ontario."

And I entirely agree with your assessment of the current OH knives.

Wi' a nom like Bannockburn, ye mus' be somewha' o' a canny Scot, me laddie!
 
i have a good friend who swears by Ontario's fixed blades, but then again.... he like CRKT folders lol

i would not hesitate to take a chance on Ontario, though, because i do not believe Justin would have let them produce his knives if they weren't capable of doing a good job. also ICYCHAP (i think his name is) reviewed his RD6 on youtube (Justin's design made by Ontario) and says it's taken a beatin without a hicup.

Hey now, my favorite kitchen knife is made of D2 with a acid wash finish with a Micarta handle. It is also the knife I use to eat my steak with. If it is handy I would cut my bagel too LOL.
 
all this talk of "tactical steak knives" reminds me of something pretty funny -

my buddy, Iraq Vet, works at a place where he is issued a 9mm and an AR15. he is allowed to carry a folder including his balisong. however, they told him he could NOT carry his Nimravus. they said "no fixed blades". so he points out another employee that brought a steak knife in his lunch box and says "what about his fixed blade" they say "that's for cutting steak" he says "yea, that's what i use my Nimravus for also" (true, we both do). they still tell him that (basically) his steak knife looks scarier than the other guys so he can't have it at work - Tactical Steak Knife :D
 
Im sorry zignal but I LOVE CRKT. Easily in the top 3 commercial knife makers of all time.

Would all be ahead of CRKT in my opinion.

No way is Cold Steel ahead of Buck in any way shape or form. In fact Cold Steel wouldn't even make my top 25 :) To be a Commercial Knifemaker , they would have to actually MAKE a knife , otherwise , they are just designing and marketing.
Sorry , but that is indeed the COLD hard truth .

I'm not sure what criteria you're so I'd ask you to define what you meant by "top" 3 commercial knife manufacturers of all time. That word "top" is pretty nonspecific and it would help to understand what your criteria were.

I actively like the CRKT folks and know them and have their knives and have sold them and have a great deal of respect for them and their products. I think they're one of the best value's out there and I think they run their company honorably and they actively support the general knife using community visibly more than many other companies. I'd still have trouble putting them in the top 3 of all time when they have to compete with Marbles and Case and Buck and Chris Reeves and Camillus and many others who came before and are still manufacturing.

I wish Camillus was a still around. One of my all-time favorite knives, now retired because it can't be replaced, is the Camillus-manufactured AG Russell yellow delrin lockback. For those of you unfamiliar with it, it was a variation of the "Remington Bullet" style of lockback.
