My hunt began well before dawn within an area at Aberdeen Proving Grounds that we've never hunted before. The Army opens and closes forested areas without consulting us. :)

The morning was not productive. After a lunch break we developed a fresh battle plan and I was assigned a post along Chesapeake Bay with an active patch of white oak trees. By active I mean to say that acorns are dropping without ceasing. This food source draws in animals like a magnet and during the afternoon I spotted 5 does within easy crossbow range. But due to angles or leafy cover, I shot just this one doe. Every hunter has his own ethics. For me, I'll take a "high percentage" kill shot or pass up the animal. I killed this doe with a double lung shot at approx 25 yards. The animal wobbled a little and collapsed about four car lengths from impact. My bolt sailed through the deer and at least half of its length was embedded into the soil! During field dressing, I observed severe damage to tubing above the heart. I'm guessing that instant loss of blood pressure caused the doe to lose oxygen to the brain which explains the wobbling and collapse.

This hunt took place on OCT 11th but foolishly I did not check camera battery power before I left for the hunt. By the time I got home, it was late and I hurriedly skinned, quartered, and placed the venison in large cooler with ice. Finally hit the pillow after midnight. This photo was taken following morning. Admittedly this photo is less-than-ideal but best I could do.

This Maryland doe weighed in at 72 lbs after field dressing. Thick fat was observed at loins and hind quarter. This venison will be a TOP Trophy on the dinner table. Praise God for His bountiful blessings!!

Thick fat? Look out on the East coast then. You all are more than likely in for a whopper of a winter!!! Funny how the animals know that isn't it!
 
You might be right. Al Gore has been way off with his Global Warming theory that brought him a $1 million Nobel Peace Prize.

I don't mind Winter until about middle of March. That's when I've had enough.

I've got a question? What state do you go to to get a '2nd deer of the season?' I grew up in colorado and now live in arizona. Anything more than one big game animal per year is called poaching is those states
 
There are quite a few state that have such huge deer populations that the hunters are allowed to take several deer a year, some are as many as a deer a week. Here in Idaho we can harvest One bear, one Elk,and one Deer, and if we put in for an X tag we can harvest a white tail deer as well. Oh plus we can also take a Mt. Lion. I almost forgot you could also put in for a draw only animal if you did over the counter tags on the others, so you could also hunt a Moose,goat, or antelope.

I have a friend that grew up in Az and he is quite happy he lives here in Idaho now.

We are one of the cheapest places for out of state hunters and you can get at least one deer tag and one elk tag. And if you draw on a X tag it is an extra and does not go against your other drawings, its the only time you can draw two tags in one season.

Between archery, rifle, and muzzleloader, plus landowner; plus the fact that if you go into a check station they'll hand out another doe tag after you've tagged out...i just don't have enough freezer-space or hungry friends to fill all my tags.
 
Some regulations from V.A.
Bag Limits

East of the Blue Ridge (except on National Forest lands in Amherst, Bedford, and Nelson counties)
The bag limit for deer shall be two a day, six a license year. Of the six deer limit, no more than three may be antlered deer and at least three must be antlerless deer.
West of the Blue Ridge and on National Forest lands in Amherst, Bedford, and Nelson counties
The bag limit for deer shall be one a day and five a license year. Of the five deer limit, no more than two may be antlered deer and at least three must be antlerless deer (unless noted in the exception below).

* The bag limit for deer shall be two a day on private lands in Clarke, Frederick, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and in the City of Winchester.
* If a hunter kills two antlered deer in Shenandoah County, at least one of the antlered deer must have at least 4 antler points, 1 inch or longer, on one side.

Earn a Buck (EAB)

At least one antlerless deer must be taken on private lands in Bedford, Clarke, Fairfax, Fauquier, Franklin, Frederick, Loudoun, Patrick, Prince William, Roanoke, Shenandoah, and Warren counties and in the City of Winchester before the second antlered deer of the license year may be taken on private lands in any of these localities. Furthermore, at least two antlerless deer must have been taken on private lands in Bedford, Fairfax, Fauquier, Franklin, Loudoun, Patrick, and Prince William counties before the third antlered deer of the license year may be taken on private lands in any of these counties. Bag Limit Exceptions

* Deer hunters, including those exempt from purchasing a license, on private land and authorized public lands may take more than the license-year bag limit of antlerless deer by using bonus deer permits or special permits (DCAP, DMAP, and DPOP). See Bonus Deer Permits section.
* DCAP, DMAP, and DPOP tags do not count against the daily or season bag limit.

Bonus Deer Permits

* Are valid for one year from date of purchase.
* Are valid for antlerless deer only.
* Are not restricted to the number that may be purchased and used.
* Allow deer to be taken in addition to the license year bag limit.
* Do not allow daily bag limit to be exceeded.
* Are valid only on private lands and authorized public lands.
* Are not valid on National Forest and Department-owned lands.
* Are not valid in Buchanan, Dickenson, and Wise counties.
* Are valid during the archery, muzzleloader, and firearms deer seasons.
* Are valid only on designated either-sex deer hunting days.

In Texas it varies by county. The county in which I live has a one buck limit, but the county where my lease is has a 5 deer limit: 2 bucks and 3 does. The total number of deer allowed to be taken in one year throughout the state (on a standard in-state hunting license) is 5, no more than 3 bucks.

So, I could take 2 bucks and 2 does in my lease county, and another buck in my home county, or 2 bucks and 3 does in my lease county. Believe me, this is not an issue when it comes to population - my lease county has the highest per-capita deer population in the state. They are literally everywhere.
 
You can take 5 in some zones this year in Arkansas. In zone 13 where I hunt you can kill no more than two bucks and or up to five does.
I was born in Alabama and there you could kill an ungodly amount of deer in a year. About a hundred counting bow season if I'm not mistaken. That was about 15 years ago. You could kill one a day. Doe season was a month long and you could a buck and a doe a day during that. Don't know if it's still like that. (Or even if I'm remembering it correctly)
 
I really envy you guys who can get multiple deer per year, must be nice. I wish Oregon had that type of game management issues.
 
The reason we have so many tags and earn a buck program in the county I live in is because of being way over populated with deer. My hunting partner is assistant superintendent for VDOT in our area and last year by August they had picked up 270 dead deer off the road ways in just our district. So I try to do my part and keep them off the roads while also feeding my family and friends. What a way to give back to the community:)
 
I don't doubt that far more deer die due to vehicle collision in Virginia than by hunting. I was driving up 17 to 66 yo 81 early last November and I would say I saw a dead deer along the road almost every mile.

I've been hunting deer for 20 years though and have only shot 3. I only hunt regular firearms season though and unfortunately get messed up fairly often by people doing drives and running dogs through my hunting stand...which usually only ever drives the does and scares the bucks off in other directions.
 
I hunt in Maryland where the deer are plentiful.

When You buy your non-resident Maryland license it comes with 12 deer tags: 2 buck and 10 doe. Baltimore County has unlimited doe tags. No daily bag limit.

I often hunt at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland which is an active US Army Base. The deer are managed by US Fish & Wildlife Service. None of the 12 deer tags mentioned above are counted by state of Maryland because this is a Federal property. Aberdeen has it's own bag limits. At Aberdeen, you must kill 3 does after each buck is taken. This can be frustrating when a "big one" is within easy crossbow range but you're still in the mode of shooting does. So it goes.

Maryland has abundant deer:

- mild winters

- no large predators (except humans)

- high fawn survival rate

- excellent blend of forests & farms

Here is Georgia, we have a yearly limit of 2 bucks and 10 does per year.

Hunting season this year is also from September 11th until January 1st.

Legal firearms are ANY .22 caliber or larger center-fire firearm. I guess the state trusts the hunter to pick a firearm and load that will give an ethical kill, instead of trying to over legislate it.

(you could use a baby browning .25 acp if you wanted to)
 
I got 2 of my 10 Does on October 16 opening day for rifles, within seconds of each other. About 0930 a small herd of 8 paraded in front of my blind crossing a field between 85 and 120 yds. out. I picked out the 2 biggest and prayed. I got the first one and the last one as fast as it took to work the lever on my .308 Marlin Xpress. Sorry I sound like I'm bragging, but they were my 1st 2 deer ever. I just started hunting last year and saw a total of 3 deer all year. Already have half a freezer full (large freezer). Went out again today and saw 3 bucks, small ( 4 pt ) medium (8 pt) and one that looked twice the size of the medium one, literally crashing through a wood line. The woods and distance made it impossible to see the size of his rack. Got the scope on the other 2, but they were going through the woods over 100 yds away, so...no shot. I have a feeling this is going to be a good year. :)

Florida Non-Resident 1 Year license is $151.50 and Non-Resident 10 day is $46.50. Add $5.00 to that for your deer permit. And yes, that 2 deer per day is over-the-counter.

Our deer season this year in my area started July 31st with archery and ran until General Gun that ended Oct. 17th. General Gun will pick back up Nov. 20th until Jan 2nd of 2011.

So basically that's 6 months of 2 deer per day. During Archery it's either sex. During Crossbow, Muzzleloader and General Gun it's buck only unless you have an anterless deer permit (those permits are tied to the property your hunting only) and then during a special 7 day period during General Gun you can hunt either sex.

Next year has the possibility of being even better. They're merging Archery and Crossbow seasons. I'm curious to see if they will let us take both sex for a longer period of time.

thats terrible! even here in our crowded little island kingdom we can shoot as many deer as we like throughout the year! last year i shot 20 or so. this year i have only shot 4 or 5.
 
When I left Pennsylvania in 1992 you could only shoot one deer a year. You could apply for an extra doe tag but you had a better chance of winning the Pa lottery.

If you killed your deer on the first day of Archery you were done for the rest of the year.

Silly.
