Nice! What tree is that in the second picture?
Good for askin! That my friend is a shagbark hickory tree. Just happened to come across a small patch of woods with dozens of these scattered about. When they mature and get big like this one, few things are more beautiful. And wherever you find hickory trees you're bound to find squirrels. They gotta real taste for hickory nuts!

Hope you've got at least a 5 in. barrel. Pistol hunting is no small chore. Find yourself a good rest (or at least a tree to lean on) and it certainly should be doable! Best of luck on your recovery!

I dont take pictures but I have gunned down many in the back yard on several occasions.
one was running and i took 7 shots, 3 hit, one head 2 body.
then another was still and i loaded one round and got a headshot.

Thanks bailey. I wouldn't trade my 39a for nothin! Excellent shooter and carries very well. In fact, when I do miss, you can bet it's the shooters fault and not the rifle -- usually caused by too much caffein that morning!

A 39a is on my "must have" list. My late friend had one that was a tack-driver. One will turn up some day.

Considering that decomposition starts from the inside out...I would say you need to get on it the same day ASAP. Once you get the organs out (especially the intestines) then you can keep the meet in a cool place for a couple days or so before freezing or cooking. We usually put ours in a salty brine to get the blood out
Yeah, I usually do my squirrel hunting in the cold weather so that helps a little...not to mention since they are a lot smaller than a deer, they won't hold their heat that long. However, once rigor mortis sets in, it is harder to skin them as well. Usually when I am squirrel hunting, they don't come out in force until around dusk, so I guess it is about 2-3 hours between when they are shot and dressed.

What rifle is that in the OP? It looks like a Winchester 9422 to me, but the pistol grip stock is throwing me off.
