The 336 Club

this thread ( and madogre and several other websites) has me jonesing hard for a shorty 336. For about a month or so i have been shopping my local places hard as well as gunbroker fo a donor rifle. i have a really clean glenfield 30a im into cheap but i cant seem to bring myself to chop that one. found a pre safety in 35 rem for 450.. i kinda dont want to get into another caliber... i have a 3030 now as well as an old win 94 in 32Sp. if i coudl find a 336 in 32 spc that woudl be cool.

badlander- nice. you say it was a SC so the factory 4+1 mag tube is in place ?
i wouldnt be opposed to a 4+1 shorty but the potential donors i have seen have been 20 inchers with full length mag tubes.

Nem look what you've started, this is pretty close to the world 336 HQ. I wonder how many first THR posts landed in this thread? I'd guess it's a bunch. You've done a great job maintaining the place.

ElToro: I'd place a WTB ad as local as you can. Sometimes it pays off as most non-enthusiasts undervalue them (or we overvalue them...) Depending on your budget you might turn up one of the SDT's for less than you could buy a rifle and have it chopped. Handy little rifles if'n your eyes are young enough to see that close.

I would like to be a member. I don't own a 336 but I do recommend them to customers and friends when they are looking for a lever action. I'm mostly interested in the smithing aspect of the 336. I've had a few come across my bench which had the infamous "Marlin jam", but got them up and running with a little wire welding and some good info on how to from RC. I'm not into lever guns but the 336 has earned my respect....tough and reliable.

I look forward to learning more about this little gem of a rifle. I had my first Marlin in 444 last week and it was the first time I had ever seen a shell leveler on the shell lifter, I mostly get 30/30 or 35's in the shop. I was wondering if this is because the 444 round is heavier and larger and shell leveler allows Marlin to keep the same design of shell lifter and not worry about timing.

yeah i missed on a pre saftey glenfield locally for under 300 and guy had another one with safty for a bit less but im just not into the safety.

i will find one. theres a few for sale in another local shop but they have been there a while at 450+ its gotta be pistol grip stocked presaftey. i dont like the feel of teh strait stock. they made millions, i will get one at my price.

BTW, he has plenty of company with a 30AS, an 1894C - .357 Mag., and an 1895G - .45/70. Oops! Can't forget the Marlin 81 bolt.

That has several 336's from $229 (safety) to $319 that I have been drooling over. They are out there, if you look around.

Just: the 44 performs fine in mine, some of them suposedly act up as the carrier is different, it has a stop and a leveler on it. i love her and am hoping to get some venison or bear with her. but that carrier is my only concern if it breaks im up a creek, they only made them for 4 or 5 years back in the 60's, and parts are scarce(my brother iinn law is a machinest so if something happens ill go that route). got a load of 2400 under a xtp 240gr that i have worked up and with open sights its about an 1.5in at 50yds. I hope to tighten it up, but thats where she sits now.

I'll be joining up as well. I recently aquired a '75 336c in a trade. I gave too much for it, but I have a special place in my heart for Marlins. My first gun was a marlin model 60. I still have that, plus two more rimfires (a modified 25n, and a 795). I have been oogling marlin lever actions since I was a kid, and when one ended up in a trade (decades later), I jumped on it.

My decision was between a 1894c in .357, and the 336. I was leaning towards the 1894c as a companion to my GP100, but after handling both, the 336 just felt, I don't know, right. People rave about the 1894c, and I can't say I would turn one down if I had the cash and there as a good specimine there for the right price. But the 336 just feels more substantial, and I am very partial to pistol grip stocks. The 1894 conversion to pistol grip sounds like a pain.

So, now I have this old gun, that looks like it has had a grand total of 20 rounds through it since it was new. It does not appear to have ever been cleaned, and there is yellowed dried up oil on the bolt. The action is sticky and chunky, but I think a good clean and lube will help wonders. The trigger is phenominal. After shot of cleaner and a bore snake, the barrel looks good. I have not had a chance to disassemble, clean, lube, and shoot the thing.

I put a 2-7x pine ridge (cabela's) scope on it, that I had sitting around. We will see if I stick with that, or opt to switch to peep sights. I want to get the action smoothed out before I start messing with that. My initial plan was to put on ramline furniture to better match the houge grips on the GP100 that it will be companions with, but I am not sure now, I might just tru-oil the wood and keep it.

Just thought I would share my newest aquisition. As I get it running right, and dialed in, I will post pictures, etc. Glad to be a member!

I just finished up my deer season yesterday with my 2003 vintage 336A 30-30 and 150gr Fed Fusion on a doe at 50yd I wish I could say that I got my buck on the opener with the 30-30 too, but I used my Marlin 1894SS .44 mag on him. I would have been tagged out on friday but I couldn't get a steady enough hold so I had to pass on that one. Sorry but no pics as I got out of the woods late and got the doe in the meat locker post haste.

My 336 now has a companion, though between you and me, I hope it ain't jealous...

Today I adopted a .44 mag 1894. Between that and my 336, and the reloading gear my better half hinted I'll be getting for Christmas, I'm seein' some good times ahead.

Unfortunately, it seems that my earlier feed problem (336) is a lifter that ain't getting the rounds high enough to feed into the chamber properly. Is this an easy 'smith job, or should I just go ahead and call Marlin?

I would like to be a member too. I have a 336C. From my recent research it was made in 1977. I've owned it since the 80's. I don't hunt anymore but still cherish this rifle (but I cherish all my guns).

a new one for me - 336BL

I saw photos of these when they first came out and was somewhat interested. However, I was concerned with the quality of new Marlins, especially with the move. Thought I would wait till I saw one in person. a few days ago I went to a local shop for some ammo and there was one in the rack. After handling it, looking at the wood to metal fit, and checking the action I came home with one. I already had a Weaver K 2.5 off another gun so I put it together. I like the feel of it -- it's a heavy little gun with the laminated stock. 7 lbs 13 oz with the Weaver mounts and scope, empty. That's fine with me as I don't hunt much anymore. I might take it out for a walk thru the woods but it will mostly be a range gun. I've got a couple of young grandkids that like to go to the range with me. I was pleasantly surprised that it appeared to be pretty well put together. The fit and finish as well as trigger and action felt okay. Mine was still marked New Haven. Just thought I would show it off.

Here it is: Marlin 1936 Rifle, made in 1941. I bought this from my brother in law, for $250, just how you see it. It's never needed anything but a good cleaning, and someone who wanted to shoot it. I fell in love with it after the first day at the range, and now I'm loading for it. With any luck, it will one day belong to my grandkids...

I am back. As i was saying earlier in this post. Post 2592

I bought a 336 and received it with a broken stock. While waiting for insurance to cover it i ordered a factory second stock and forearm off ebay. The only blemish is a black mark you will see in the pics. We stained it and clear coated it. Looks awesome.
Only problem is the original stock was about a 1/8 inch narrower top to bottom. So the screw that holds the stock wont thread through to the bottom. Where can i get a longer screw ? Or what should i be looking for?
Now i am just waiting for my Pachymer recoil pad and be all set.
