There are plenty of great choices of caliber that you won't find at your local Wal-mart, or even at most gun shops. What is your favorite obsolete/odd ball caliber and why?

310 Cadet
577/450 Martini Henry
256 Winchester Magnum
22 Savage High Power (not quite obsolete)
455 Webley (not obsolete, just oddball)

7.5 Swiss again not readily available.
.222 Remington Magnum.

I used to be all about the diffrent oddballs.

.30 herrett in an AR15
A 7.62x39 bench gun
A .303 Brit single shot
.45 win mag (not .458) bolt action carbine
All the European military rifle cartridges and a couple from the far east

But I eventually tired of the hard to get or make brass, no reloading data, and for what???? A round that goes BANG! and puts a bullet hole in a target just like 308/30-06/223 will.

Now all my rifle chamberings are as vanilla as they come 223, 308, 30/06, 30/30 and 357

got a special place in my heart for my 416 Taylor.

also used to have a 445 Super Mag and a 45 Win Mag both in a contender...both really nice.

Rifle caliber=.22 K-Hornet.
Low noise, easy to reload, low recoil, effective to 250 meters where most of my hunting and shooting takes place, more accurate than standard .22 Hornet and not anywhere near as fussy to load for.
Standard .22 Hornet can be fired in the K-Hornet chamber in a pinch and fireforms for easy reloading as a K-Hornet.

+1 on the K-Hornet... for the exact reasons that Onmilo stated.

I also like the .250 Savage and .300 Savage rounds. They are very efficient cartridges, and work well in carbine length barrels.

Please don't bring up the .250 Savage.
I stupidly sold my 99A in that caliber.
One of a few very deep gun related regrets.

the only 'oddball' cartriges i have experience with are the 6.5x55 (as close to perfect as one is likely to find) and the 300 savage. i wouldn't say the savage is an oddball as much as it is practically obsolete.
+1 on the 250 savage too. i certainly wouldn't mind reloading for one.

I LOVE my 6.5x55 too. It is my fav rifle in the rack there is not even a close second. The performance on deer and hogs is amazing I have never had to track anything, the recoil is less then a .243, and at the range it shoots sub-moa every time I do my part even with super cheap ammo. Kinna hard to not like a round that has survived longer then the 30-06 or even the 30-30

Second vote for .257 Roberts, but my favorite oddball caliber is my.25-35 in a custom barreled Marlin. I would also toss out a mention for the 8.15x46r in a '98 Mauser. Very enjoyable shooting with any of these three......

Next odd balls on my wish list are a .257 Roberts, 250 Savage, 7mm or 8mm Mauser. Not crazy odd but you have to be a reloader to enjoy shooting one of these old timers, there was a day when a small quater bore was plenty for deer hunting, now eveybody thinks a 270 or 30-06 is the minimum LOL

8mm Lebel, currently loaded by Prvi Partizan. Shoots to the POA in my 1916 Berthier carbine.

.38-40 Winchester Center Fire, in my 1885 vintage Colt Lightning Magazine Rifle.

6X47Rem. Right now i think its my favorite goat round and im looking forward to using it on deer next trip home.

Closest thing I have to an oddball is my .222 Mag. Not many .222 Mag shooters around anymore.
