I have decided that I want a big bore AR. The choices are 458 socom or 450 Bushmaster. The main differences that I find are that the socom can shoot heavier bullets. The conversions seem to be straitforeward. I am not sure about magazines. Any comments on the relative merits of the calibers are welcome. I will probably assemble my own as I have done several AR's before so suggestions about parts would be appreciated.
Thanks for any input

Do you reload?

If not, it seems 450 Bushmaster ammo as loaded and sold by Hornady, and might be cheaper & easier to find.
It's $28.24 p/20 round box at Able Ammo. ($1.40 a shot)

.458 Socom is loaded by Corbon, and is $59.37 for 20 rounds. ($3.00 a shot)

I'd go with tthe Socom the Bushmaster uses 45 pistol bullets.452" where the Socom uses rifle bullets.458". The Socom you can load heavier bullets. And if you don't reload you might wont to start.:D$$$

I'd do the opposite but for the same reasons. The bushmaster shoots MUCH cheaper pistol bullets, where the socom shoots much more expensive rifle bullets.

Only the 450 Bushmaster has been submitted to SAAMI. Add the benefit of both Hornady and Remington producing ammo for 450 Bushmaster and the question really becomes do you want the round with greater backing or a niche or proprietary cartridge?

I have a 458, bullet choice and using a stock 223 mag, so I don't have to keep track of "special" stuff, made it easy.

To be fair I use subsonic loads with a suppressor and wanted heavy bullets. On the other hand if I intended to use bullets in the 200 grain range I would have went with a .30 cal upper.

Thanks for the info so far. Still haven't made up my mind. I do plan on reloading for which ever one I end up with. So any other input is welcome.
