Well I finished assembling my lower and am now ready to tackle upper possibilities. Here's my situation.. I'm putting a $800 cap on this project. (Not including optics) I already have $220 invested in the lower so I'm playing with around $580. I'm setting this rifle up for some serious 'yote huntin', as well as any other unsuspecting varmint. The uppers I'm interested in at the moment are the DMPS 20" stainless 1 in 9 flat top and the Stag 24" stainless 1 in 8. (On Stag's website I only see a 24" in stainless? Not sure if they offer a 20")

I'm in need of some suggestions from more experienced shooters like yourselves. Is there another upper I should be looking into? What am I really going to gain if I did, in fact, buy a 24" barrel?

The gun, as of now, is a Double Star receiver, Stag lpk and an a2 fixed stock. I want this gun to be a tack driver. I doubt I'll be skippin' out to farm to shoot 500 yards but I would dang sure like to know that I could. The guns main purpose will be coyotes at 200-300 yards. How can I build the most durable, accurate and reliable gun for the money I have to spend?
 
For 'yotes and/or longer shots I might go with a 1:7 or possibly 1:8 to shoot heavier (longer) bullets. I'm not saying a 1:9 and bullets appropriate for that twist cannot work, they can, just saying what I would probably do if I anticipated longer range shots.
 
No, I haven't decided on a bullet yet. I would like to go with a 1 in 7 but was unable to find a complete upper with that twist that was in my price range. Are there any I am overlooking?
 
BCM (Bravo Company ...something) are well regarded and reasonably priced. I'd take a look at what they have. You could also go to the ar15.com "Equipment exchange" in the parts subforum, and find something used. There are MANY ar15 addicts constantly buying and selling and you can get good deals. I got a colt 20" upper for just over 300 bucks there (minus bolt carrier/bolt).
 
See if you can find someone local who has the AR specific tools. Then you can build whatever you want, and for $580 you should be able to get all the parts needed.
 
Blay, that's a sick machine. That's pretty much what I'm wanting to build. And the gun will be chambered in .223, to answer the earlier post. I've been contemplating an upper build. I like some of the full uppers listed above but would love to fully customize one. Is there a list of exactly everything needed to finish upper? I know you need the barrel, gas block, gas line, charging handle, bolt, etc. But what about pins and other small things? I didn't know if there was some sort of kit like a lpk for the upper. Id like to have everything listed to figure up how much an upper build would cost.
 
The only piece of advise I'd offer if you are going to go with an 18" barrel is to watch out for the many that have carbine length or mid length gas systems. lf you go with a rifle length, It will shoot much smoother.
 
I think my next AR will be a dedicated dog gun, for me I want a 18" non threaded barrel that is small diameter and fluted, maybe stainless but I want it coated in a grey or earth color.
I think Sun Devil recievers in Devil Coat with a matching full length free float tube and a skeleton stock.
Probably a 2x7 scope and maybe a offset burris reflex site.
I'll take a 1 in 9 twist that works real good on 55gr ballistic tips.
What I want is a light gun that will shoot well, my dog hunting involves some walking so I'll take it as ligh as I can get it.

A rifle length gas system, a H buffer, a extra power extractor spring, black insert and a defender or O ring would ensure reliability.
 
For the distances you stated, there is no reason in the world that a 16" wouldn't work. Get a BCM midlength gas system upper, and never look back.
