I'm interested in a scope that is Mil Dot, 3x9 and around $150. I'm on my 10 waiting period for a 700 ADL 30-06. I'm planning on hunting at closer ranges, 100 yard target shooting, and an annual 300+ yard shooting fest. I plan on keeping a journal on every shot, and I understand the value of a Mil Dot for training.
I'm having trouble finding a nice scope in my wallet's ballpark. I'm contemplating a Mueller APT with Mil Dot and nice adjustable controls, but its not offered in 3x9. The Bushnell elite 3200's in my price range have a crappy multiplex reticle. I'm not seeing any good Nikons that fit the bill. I kind of like the redfield accutrak ballistic reticle but its still not Mil Dot.
Also I'm already killing my bank account, so I'm thinking about going with redfield 2 piece base and standard rings. I understand the EGW with Burris Extreme rings are nice... those rings have a ton of screws to keep things tight and level.

School me on why you need mil-dots. School me now.

Range estimation, holdover, and windage adjustments are just a few reasons. Can you do all that with other scopes? Sure, but the mil-dot makes it easier.

For the OP I would look at the Bushnell elites at Natchez and Midway they are on a fire sale for some reason.

If you don't like those try my favorite Sightron SII, Big Sky or SIII.

I have a BSA contender coming in the mail tomorrow. plan on putting it on an ar-15, 4-16 illuminated mill dot. cost around 147 from Optics planet which sounds like its right in your price range. Ill let you know what i think about it. I've had luck with the other BSA scopes ive mounted on 308's and 30-06. my favorite so far is the BSA Panther i have on a 308 mauser which is a tack driver. can place a shot just about in the same hole with a 165 gn spitzer from speer. whatever you choose for a scope make sure you get a good mount. Happy Hunting!!

Bushnell Elite 3200 Tactical 10x40 for $150...you won't find a better scope for what you're asking at a better price.

(Bushnell Elite 3200/4200 are 'firesale' because they were discontinued for 2011, so once they're gone...they're gone)

Personally, I wouldn't cheap out on scope bases or rings (not to say Redfield is cheap - I don't know their stuff)...you don't need to drop a ton of money on them but Burris Xtreme Tactical bases with Signature Zee rings will run you roughly $60 for both and they are very high quality.

go look at this thread
Center Point 4-16X40 scope from Walmart, should I buy it???

You don't want a variable power mil-dot unless it's a FFP. The Bushnell 10X mentioned above would be your best bet for your budget. Burris 2-piece steel mounts and some quality steel rings to finish things off.

I agree with Skylerbone - Mil-Dots work with First Focal Plane reticles or they only work at one fixed power like 10x. If your scope is set to any other and it's not a FFP, it will not help with accurate estimation :(

FFP scopes are not that common and not that cheap. The cheapest I know of that are built for 06 recoil are Vector Optics scopes and they are not $150 :(

Of course with a variable power non FFP they often tell you the correct power for range estimation. There are also formulas you can use which help you convert at other power settings. I'd rather have variable power scope for which I can do range estimation on a single setting while still having more power range, than having a fixed power scope.
