Illinois resident gun rights in Michigan.

My family has purchased a 2 ND home in south west Michigan. at this point I have no intension of becoming a permanent resident. I will be spending almost every weekend there & about 5 KS. vacation a yr. I live in Illinois. I have a valid F.O.I.D. card. I also have a Florida non-resident C.W.P. I know that Michigan dose not recognize the Florida C.W.P. My ?? are, can I have loaded hand guns & rifles while I'm Thar ? Can I buy ammo & reloading supplies, including primers & gun powder in Michigan ? Also can I store these things in the home while I'm not there ? Thanks in advance for Ur help. I have to go to sleep now, have to work early. I'll check back tomorrow. :)

The answer is Yes, you can have loaded firearms in the state of Michigan. You can not carry concealed without a recognized out of state non-resident permit. FOID cards are irrelevant in Michigan. Yes you can can buy ammo and reloading supplies. Yes you can store firearms in your house while you are not there.

Here's a tidbit from the ATF's FAQ that might cheer you:
Q: May a person (who is not an alien) who resides in one State and owns property in another State purchase a handgun in either State?If a person maintains a home in 2 States and resides in both States for certain periods of the year, he or she may, during the period of time the person actually resides in a particular State, purchase a handgun in that State. However, simply owning property in another State does not qualify the person to purchase a handgun in that State.

Yes. Follow Michigan laws on possession and carry of those weapons.

As I read the NRA-ILA list of MI. gun laws, handguns have to be regestered if you live in MI. Since I live in Illinois, I don't have to because I'm visiting MI. Is this correct ?
 
You can have your rifle and shotguns in Michigan; but, the way I read the law is unless you have a home state CCW, no handguns can be brought into the state unless you plan on becoming a resident. If you are, there are other steps to follow.
 
The way I read it is I live in Illinois and visiting Michigan. So if you don't live in Michigan you can't bring a handgun with. what about going to a target range, or hunting with a handgun in Michigan ? It is confusing because when you read the law it is from the prospective of a resident. I have F.O.I.D. card & can own handguns in Illinois. I'm not looking to CCW, just to have them with me on privet property when I'm there. I'm shire someone can clear this up for me. :)
 
Call the Michigan state AGs office and direct questions to them. At worst, you could call the PR officer (if there is one) of the County SD where you will reside while in MI and direct your questions there.
I know to CC in Michigan, you have to have a CCW license from another state. I'm not sure about possesion or ownership of a handgun from out of state residents. Again, I would defer to the experts in the AGs office. It would make sense that if you have a hand gun ownership permit from another state, that would be sufficient, but laws often fail to operate along the lines of common sense.

To clarify, that does not apply to your car. Whether you're a Michigan resident or not, without a CPL, you may not have it loaded in your car, and you may only have it in your car legally (even UNloaded) driving to and from a place where you can legally shoot.
 
I believe someone else suggested the State AG's office.

My I double on that suggestion. You will have a written legal opinion with you if questioned by any LEO. The WA AG's office has common weapons carry opinions posted on their web page.

Go to the MI AG's web site and look, they may have the same and may already have a written opinion on your question. A written opinion works with ALL LEO's not just the one you talk to at the sheriff's office.
 
I just got off the phone with the Michigan AG's office and was told that Illinois residents may bring handguns, rifles, & shotguns with them as long as they are unloaded and in a case in the trunk of the car or inaccessible in a SUV. thy may be carried loaded on privet property with permission of the owner. they can only be transported in the unloaded condition to and from a place of legal use. Thanks for all the replies. :)
