A close friend of mine that I've known since age 10 just so happens to be a black, gay male here in a rural town in Georgia. I don't know any details, but apparently he's been having a bit of trouble lately with people who make him feel very physically threatened. Do any of you guys have any experience with "The Pink Pistols"?

Apparently they are a gay group that encourages members to arm themselves for self defense. I think their motto is "Armed Gays don't get Bashed." They also accept straight members of course, but I was just wondering if anyone here has had any experiences with this group (good or bad) before I recommend them to my friend.

Also, I don't want to hear any jokes. I do not see the appeal of other men, just like most of you probably don't. But it's none of our business what anyone else does in the privacy of their own bedroom. This is The High Road and I am sincerely concerned for the safety of my friend.

I have. It is actually extremely accurate and very fun to shoot:

I shot IDPA in the Sacramento area with a couple members. If the rest of the org is anything like them, I'd recommend it.

Haha. I've seen a bunch of them in stores and on the range, but I've never actually shot a literally pink colored pistol. Is that a Khar?

I have no experience with them, but I'm all for em'.

The more people that refuse to be a victim and support our 2A rights the better.

I was very glad to see that a group like this was formed when I first found out about them. As a fairly conservative, straight male who supports gay rights, it's good to see a very liberal demographic embracing gun culture. I don't know much about the Pink Pistols, but hey, they've got my support.

Best of luck to you're friend.

That's exactly what I was thinking, c919. I don't know much about them, but any organization that encourages the 2nd Amendment to a group that leans politically left tends to get my support by default.

I just don't want to recommend it right away since I have no experience with them. My buddy is not experienced with firearms and I want to make sure any interaction he has is positive. The more gays that support gun rights, the better.

Seems like I've only got confirmation of my first instincts to recommend them so far.

I'll recheck this thread in the morning and so long as no one has anything bad to say about the Pink Pistols, I'm going to send him the contact info.

There is some national coordination, but most (all?) events are organized by individual chapters, and their activity can vary widely. I don't believe there has been a meet here in LA in several years, for instance.

In Georgia, there seems only to be the Atlanta chapter, and I don't know if they're active. The mailing list seems usually to have good advice, and he should at least join up.

Is your friend already a shooter? While I endorse the Pink Pistols, it is probably easiest to introduce him to shooting through the usual route, with a CCW course and so on, than through the Pink Pistols only, if they don't already have a presence in his area.

Good luck to him.

While I certainly do not see the appeal of other men (no offense guys) and my views typically lean a little more to the right, it has always been my belief that homosexuals have just as much of a constitutional right to same sex marriage as we do to keep and bear arms.

It's nice to see a group, like you said that typically leans left, exercising their rights.

I don't totally disagree with RS14's statement about introducing him to shooting through the usual route, but I do think that a group like this is a good thing because many gun toters may not be as accepting as some of us here on THR. All it would take is some redneck from say Union County, North Carolina (where I live) to make an ignorant comment and turn someone off from the entire firearms community.

If he has little experiance with a gun why dont you take him and your guns out to the range and try to figure out what gun of yours he likes then go try to find a pink version of it.I would recomend a revolver for obvious reason plus they make a ton of pink grips for them.

I'm not sure if this was a joke that didn't carry well in text, but to clarify, we mostly shoot the same guns as everyone else. There are probably a few of us "camp" enough to carry an actual pink pistol, but the name is really meant as a joke, on account of the stereotype.

Fixed that for ya, Rusty.

Back when I was active in the Second Amendment Sisters we coordinated several shooting & media events with the Pink Pistols. They were some wonderful people.

What I also found interesting at the time is that the organization and people were accepted immediately by the pro-RKBA groups, not so much the left-leaning pro-gay groups.

Seems like all experiences have been positive, so I'm going to send him an email with the information.

He is not a shooter already, and I have feeling that his usual circle of friends nowadays would probably not approve. That's why I'm sending him to the Pink Pistols. To a lot of folks that are not "gun people", carrying a gun for protection is associated with being backwards, ignorant, and intolerant. He knows I carry and that I am none of those. I just want to make sure he knows that I am not an exception, but for the most part, the rule.

...And that's why I stand by my assertion that the more gays that support gun rights(specifically), the better. It would be harder to paint your political enemies as backwards, intolerant, stupid hicks if all the major gay organizations support carrying concealed. And the only way to do that is to convert the gay community one member at a time. Convert to guns/self defense/2A, not... uh...Just nevermind...

As someone with a huge group of queer friends (most of my closest), I know that the incidences of violence directed at queers, especially gay men and trans-people is astounding. I know a lot of men with scars from knives and beatings, and I know others who have been killed. And I live in one of the most progressive cities in the country when it comes to such things, we even have a gay mayor!

Having a viable self-defense strategy, probably including a gun, seems like a no-brainer for a gay man in rural Georgia. I've met a number of PP members and, as everyone else here has said, they were outstanding folks. Smart, thoughtful, VERY pro-RKBA, and good shooters to boot!

I think that linking him up with a local chapter if there is one is great. If that's not possible, then spending some range time with him yourself or helping him find a local class will be good too. I jump at the opportunity to take new shooters to the range, especially when they're friends of mine!

Definitley recommended. Gun ownership is not just for conservatives. It drives me crazy to hear the Liberal bashing on gun forums. Some of the staunchest, and most influential supporters of the 2nd Amndt happen to be Liberals, and their message of person liberty is much more powerful than if it came from a white dude wearing a nascar tshirt. Encourage Liberals/minorities and the otherwise oppressed to excercise their right to self preservation. Lose the us vs. them mentality.

Oh i thought they were serius about wanting a pink gun to carry . I wasnt joking just trying to give my honest advise to someone just starting to carry.

have only had very limited contact with them out here, but it has been very positive. a good group of people. if i were you i would recommend them to your friend. Pretty sure they will be heavy on the proper defensive use also, they aren't about to encourage him to shoot up a gay basher
