The SWC-HC (semi-wadcutter, hollow cavity) looks the most attractive to me. If it expands, all the better, but if it smashes shut or "rivets" over, it will still be a semi-wadcutter. The full wadcutter is intriguing and would make a good "in gun" load, but this bullet shape is difficult to reload with a speedloader. If those velocity figures are actually from a two-inch barrel, they would have some pretty stout recoil in a lightweight revolver.
 
Looks like the cavity walls just tore right off.
But as the test shows in an almost effective manner, like in a "quik-shok" bullet.
All three bullets in question are tested on that site.

To me it's an absolute no-brainer - go with item 20C, 158gr LSWCHCGC, That is the load I carry in my aluminum frame S&W® Airweight® and Taurus® Ultra-Lite® 38 Specials.
 
We know the old FBI load, 158gr LSWHP at about 800 fps was a good stopper, if not the great. So I have no doubt the Buffalo Bore version, at 1000 fps, is a REAL good one.

And in my Ruger Speed Six that is the load (as well as my 4 inch Service Six.)

But in light 2 inch 5 shot snubbies, I do suggest using:

Standard Pressure Short Barrel Low Flash Heavy .38 Special Ammo - 158 gr. Soft Lead SWC-HC (850fps/M.E. 253 ft. lbs.)!

That 1000 fps HURTS in a light snubby and it might even pull the bullets of the other rounds in the cylinder when fireing.

the 158 lhp is tested from 2" barrels. The bullet is made by Rimrock Bullets. It expands profoundly in the standard pressure load and expands and fragements in the plus p loading but with a large segement behind the hp remaining intact for good penetration..

The jhp load has substantially less recoil and expands very well when shot through beef brisket into water.

+1 on that Buffalo Bore 158 gr LSWCHP. It's the most power you can
get in a .38 cal. snubby. Recoil is significant in a 640 stainless and VERY
STOUT in a 637 airweight.
However whatever is on the recieving end will (not) appreciate the high level of energy.

Has anyone tested this round through heavy clothing?
It looks like it would still be very effective. The SWC build of this round allows for better penetrating damage, under the circumstances that the cavity becomes clogged or collapses, then regular "ball" ammo.
Sorta getting the best of both worlds with this bullet.

I would go with the above if it's for a .38 snubbie. Gold Dot also sells ammo for short barrel snub .38 135 grain guns.
If for a .357 I would go for the 125 grain at 1,700 fps.
 
No Eating tofu* is a felony in Texas. Invariably, I shoot the brisket a few times and then take it to my neighbor who is a master with a meat smoker. Otherwise the stuff would be too expensive to use as an expansion medium.

tofu- Noun: Low salt, fat free environmentally friendly buggers for liberals to eat.
 
I don't think I could shoot a hole through meat that is already dead. Time spent shooting it is time spent not eating it. If I did, I'd worry about lead fragments in it. An X-ray from deer shot with a lead bullet showed terrible fragmentation in the wound tract.
I am not an "environmentally friendly bugger" nor a "liberal" and I like tofu. :p
Flavored and mixed with some pierogi it can be a nice touch.
 
I carry the full WC in my non+P M36. The 158gr.SWCHPGC+P in my 642 and LCR, althought the recoil is punishing, IMHO, and quick follow up shots might be questionable. The non+P version is probably a better choice w/o sacrificing a lot of ME/Vel.

P.S. I also think the Speer GD Short Barrel +P load is not a poor choice. Many LEO's and PD's use this load.

I use the 125 grain .357 BB in the Mod. 66 and SP-101 2 inch and there is no other factory ammo that kicks like the BB in this caliber.
 
The only thing I don't like about BB is the shell casings. They use that star symbol and arrow on the end of shell casing like Corbon used to. The brass sometimes isn't the most cleanest or polished like Gold Dot or Hornady. Corbon now uses their own name on their brass.

That's Starline brass. generally considered by most reloaders as being of excellent quality. I use it for my .45 Colt, .45acp & .40 S&W with great success and long life.

Thanks for clearing up that misconception I had. Mag Safe used that brass also.
 
Yeah, that starline stuff is tough as nails.

Buffalo bore +p is the only thing that gets carried in my snubbies. 158g at 1000fps? Yes please.
