THE CHAIR IS AGAINST THE WALL
I just stumbled across a pro-gun blog with an entry talking about the number of gun owners vs. the number of crimes committed with guns.

It's pretty well accepted that the number of gun owners in this country is 40-50 million. Now, the blog author posits the statistic that there are 385,178 violent crimes committed with guns for 2007.

Ok, anyone knows that 50 million is a much larger number than 385,178, but proper visualization is what's needed to really put that in perspective.

And that's exactly what Linoge at Walls of the City has done.

Thats pretty cool. I'd like to see a matching visual with the stats for vehicular deaths and injuries. Be an interesting and telling comparison. Maybe we could finally get all the evil cars that are killing people off the roads. :D

I second that bearcreek,, would be nice to display these charts side-by-side and see how much MORE dangerous driving to work is than owning a gun,,

Yes, But.. There's Only One Thing Wrong!

I just stumbled across a pro-gun blog with an entry talking about the number of gun owners vs. the number of crimes committed with guns.

What should have really been done was to compare the total number of firearm owners (50,000,000) to how many violent crimes (or handgun crimes in general), were committed by those same 50,000,000 legal firearm owners.

Seeing "justifiable self defense" is legal, I would disregard or eliminate those totals from the above computation. I'll bet that the number is soo low (how low is it?) Out of the 385,178 violent crimes I wouldn't be surprised if it was less than a thousand.. if not in the low hundreds or maybe even less than that.

I don't believe the self defense stats are included in the 385,178 number because if so, then it would be in the millions as supposedly it is done over 2.5-3.0 million times per year, if you believe Kleck and LaPierre. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-wBwpL-pIE

Of course, those stats are statistical estimates based on limited sampling.

The really striking thing about that graphic is that it gives the antis the benefit of the doubt. More than likely a very sizeable % of the firearms violent crime and firearms homicides were committed by illegal firearms owners, i.e. those who were already on the prohibited persons list.

The other thing is, the only reason why the yellow box for firearms injuries/deaths has much of any size at all is suicides.

As the author of the linked-to graphics, I would like to thank Justin for the traffic and attention :).

And to address Single Action Six' concerns, happygeek nailed it - I intentionally crafted those images, just like I crafted my other "Graphics Matter" posts (excuse the pimpage, but there is other good stuff in there), to give the anti-rights nuts the benefit of the doubt. Even when you use their numbers and their standards and their statistics, their arguments still fall flat on their faces.

Oddly enough, I am ok with that ;).

I Didn't Realize That..

I didn't realize that there were between 2.5-3.0 million self defense shootings per year. Whoa.. that's approx 136,986 per day over a years time, or 2,739 per state/per day.

I too thank Justin for the info.. and you "Linoge" for your post, but I really wasn't concerned. I guess I didn't express myself clear enough. What I was trying to say was.. if you compare the number of "Legal" guns/owners to the number of crimes committed by those same "Legal" owners, you most likely would find it such a small number that it most likely would be (percentage wise) in the 0.?? area.

I believe those stats are an estimation of how often guns are used defensively, not how often they are fired or hits are scored defensively.

Linoge, Thanks for building that. I knew it was a pretty small difference, but I didn't realise it was that big of a difference.

I think that it is pretty hard to come up with any accurate numbers when it comes to gun crime because most of people really looking into it are biased (NRA, Brady Campaign, Politicians, etc..) That you can use the anti gun statistics and still get something that looks like that, well, thats a pretty good argument.

Also, welcom to THR!

Linoge, no problem at all. I do a lot of graphic design and infographic work, and your image is a phenomenal example of translating numerical data that most people (myself included) can't really comprehend, and presenting it in a way that immediately puts those numbers in perspective.

FWIW, I've taken your graphic and done a slight modification to it. I created an alternating 4x4 pixel pattern and used it as the fill on this image. That way you can zoom in to all of the individual pixels, getting an even better idea of the scale of the numbers involved.

That sounds awesome, Justin, but when I click on the attachment, I get the infernal red x...

Looks good. You should also do one that is firearm related homicides, rather than just deaths and injuries. Then no yellow box, and the orange box shrinks to less than half that size.

Last I looked, there are about 10 firearm related deaths per 100,000 people in the U.S. annually, but only about 3.8 firearm homicides per 100,000. Yes, it's higher than many other developed nations, but not nearly as bad as the brady bunch would like people to believe.
