Hello all, us here in Illinois have these awful things called FOID cards, I'm sure you have heard of them. Mine expired April 1, 2011. I had sent in my application somewhere around the 15th of March (I know, should have sent it earlier). Any how, just got my new card today, about nine weeks later. Just thought I'd let my fellow Illinois citizens the current wait time on FOIDs. Oh, and as a side note, State law requires FOIDs to be processed within 30 days; to keep the state from essentially banning gun ownership by "processing" FOID applications for indefinite periods of time.

Illinois has a lawless government and I suggest getting out because you are in danger.

The "foid" card is illegal. Thus Illinois is not governed by law. How bout a "spoid" card? (Speaker's ID card before you can use your freedom of speech). Or a "choid" card? (Church occupant ID card before you can choose your church). They don't even follow their own laws which they pretend are legal, by taking 3 times as long to process. Prima facia evidence of lawlessness by Illinois state government. Obviously you can say "well I eventually got my illegal permit so it's now fine" but lawlessness is dangerous.

Sorry if I don't understand but don't you have the right to vote? From what I read the mayor of Chicago dictated and eventually everyone must have complied, keeping him in office. I would think someone would run for governor and all local offices you could elect. It is simple here in WV and KY nobody would get elected being anti-gun or just maybe us Rednecks from the Hills have a long tradition of gun ownership. This isn't meant to be derogatory at all. I simply don't understand why. Is it possible the laws are there because the majority of the citizens agree with them?

No, these criminals get in office because being dead doesn't interfere with your ability to vote.

All I can say is at least nine weeks longer than on this side of the river.
I don't want to here it.

Old Coot, here in Illinois there is a huge division between Chicago, and some of the suburbs, and the rest of the state. We both accuse the other of spending all of the tax money; Chicago says we spend too much on roads, "downstate" says that they spend too much on welfare and mass transit. Chicago has a big enough chunk of the population that they only need to carry a fraction of downstate's vote to get what they want. Plus with gerrymandering, Chicago's influence in the legislature is majorly amplified. Look at the recent map from the Governor's race: http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/images/1min/elections/2010/state/IL_governor_375.png

Anyway, the point is that we are stuck with both FOID cards and Chicago, and until the later changes, neither with the former. Unless of course FOIDs get struck down as unconstitutional.

You have millions in Chicago that don't pay taxes, and live on social services, it just so happens these millions probably don't care about guns...but the people who will keep their social services coming dislike guns...now they can't get jobs but aren't stupid. They don't bite the hand that feeds.

This 9 weeks is great to hear...last I heard was 3 months, without complaining.

I really can't wrap my head around what you guys are talking about. What's it like living in a Police State? I guess you don't really get to vote there, huh? Isn't what's his name from there, somewhere around there? You know, the golfer. I think you need to organize and all vote together to get your dignity back, if nothing else. That's how I see it.

A Police State!!??
I can own all the semi auto weapons I want.
I can own all the normal capacity magazines I want.
I can buy as many guns in a month as I want.
I can buy all the ammunition I want.
The "Police". as a general rule, are quite friendly to the gun owning population, at least here downstate they are.

I may not like, condone, or appreciate the extra money the state squanders away from the additional taxation it imposes by making us have a FOID card on our person but it hardly makes this a "Police State".:scrutiny:

Its a "normal" feeling state for me.

No weird gun laws that bother/effect me. I also have never carried a gun for protection, so not having one isn't that bothersome, and I live by the oooo0000ooo so dangerous Chicago, and also go there frequently. I haven't been mugged/shot/stabbed yet.

The Foid card is troublesome, but it is good for 10 years, and I believe the background checks to get one are very good and supposedly better than NICS checks. So it kind of proves youre a good person haha.

EDIT: Not saying I don't want to leave the state, because I do. State financial reasons cause that, taxes, etc. Guns are on the bottom of the reasons to leave list.

Agreed. It's massively annoying, and inconvenient, and I do think that it infringes on our 2nd amendment rights, however...we don't live in a police state.

The FOID card was created in 1968, after Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, Jr got shot and killed. I think it was fear mongering at it's worst, and basically a tax on gun ownership...I have referred to it as "gun registration light." You need a card to do anything with firearms, but they don't require you to register guns or anything else.

Elcaminoariba, state's rights dictate that our FOID is not illegal, because the state imposed it on us by law. Is it unconstitutional? Well that's a court battle that someone should probably pursue, maybe someone already is. I don't know.

All I know is one thing: My FOID must be valid if I own firearms. I am a C&R FFL. My FOID expires in October. I'm sending in my renewal now, which will be good for 10 years. Why so early? Because I'm a responsible gun owner and I want to abide by the law as proscribed by the state that I live in. And I know from everyone else that I know that the FOID renewal process takes like 2 months, not 30 days as the law supposedly dictates.

I obey the laws, even the ones that I don't agree with, because they're the law.

You folks tell me - how many of you could just up and leave the state you live in, leave your job, move your family, find a new job that pays the same, buy a new house or get a new apartment, pay all the moving costs...just for a $10 card that takes minutes to apply for, and is good for 10 years?

I am far more upset about the fact that the state of Illinois infringes upon my constitutional right to keep AND BEAR arms. By not allowing both open carry and concealed carry, it is my opinion that the second part of that constitutional right is being denied to all gun owners of Illinois. I want to see that resolved before my $1/year tax on gun ownership gets resolved.

The whole thing about having to register yourself and gain the permission of the state before you can even buy ammo makes it a police state. After you live in America where we dont have those registration requirements, the picture becomes more clear.

I'm sure it would be far more convenient to not have to apply for and show a FOID before buying ammo, but again I don't think it defines us as a police state.

It's a state that instituted it's own background check process before the federal background check system was put in place. If anything, it's arguable that the FOID and federal background check are redundant. It's a waste of tax payer's money both in performing the background check, issuing the ID, and making us pay $10.

But it's not like we need Officer Friendly to show up and approve of us buying guns and ammo every time we do.

Thanks for the information. I guess once a reactionary law is passed and at the time it seems to be the "political" thing to do to get elected I imagine it's as tough there as anywhere else to change the system without being in it. It's tough to leave an area you grew up in for a job. We had nothing and I spent 17yrs working in DC, no guns period and my VA carry permit not recognized. Glad I retired 15yrs ago.

If you dont get your foid in 25ish day call in and complain. I didnt get my renewal by the 27th day called in and complained and had it express delivered 2 days later. If you don't call they won't do anything about it. But if you do call they will hurry their asses off to get it to ya.

JTHunter, no I have not.
County cops in my area of the state and their primary concerns are meth heads, drunk drivers, and farm burglary.

newbuckeye, you need proof of age to buy ammunition anywhere in this country and that requires a drivers license or State ID card which registers you as a citizen of a particular state and verifies your age.
Coming from Ohio where the state police always struck me as jack booted thugs your comments suprise me and your knowledge disappoints.

Iowa doesn't have a FOID, but no class II or classIII. Thinking about moving someplace more like America.

Illinois is one of the few states where one cannot exercise their right to carry arms which is a God given right, and codified by the US Constitution, which I still believe holds power over Illinois. Also, one has a right to not be encumbered by regulation against buying weaponry.

Also, limiting the types of weapons is unconstitutional. Saying that we will not allow certain large guns is like, and I apologize, only freeing slaves that weighed under 175 lbs as part of the language of the 13th Amendment.

You know that quote about good men, evil, and doing nothing? By putting up with it and not moving, that's doing nothing.

Anticipating bureaucratic delays, I was smart and submitted my renewal application a full 6 weeks early. In the end, I was without a valid FOID card for 3 weeks because it took these clowns 62 days (that's 9 weeks) to process my renewal. During the interim, you're not even allowed to touch a firearm or any ammunition.

It's all well and fine to make fun of us Illinoisans. But the fact is we have no control over these laws. We vote in our own best interest, but there are too many sheep who believe everything they see in the news and on TV.

I fully agree that our state government is corrupt. Two governors in a row who were proven corrupt, the corrupt Chicago mayor was smarter and managed not to get caught. He easily defeated his opponents every time they ran. Whenever we get a chance at someone who appears to be good, they either don't last long enough to be a serious candidate or they get stomped by the guy with more money for campaigning. I vote for the right people, but it doesn't seem to matter.

The only good things I can find about living in this state are:

  • We have GREAT sweet corn
  • We are on one of the great lakes
  • We are close to Wisconsin, which is beautiful
  • Cultural things to do in Chicago, such as world-class museums, opera, concerts of all kinds
  • Great public transit in and around Chicago
  • Last but not least, my family is here. It will be a shame when/if I leave them.

I've experience it all, and now I'm ready to go.

Yep, I'm trying to get out of here as quick as I can, but sadly, it will depend on my wife's career. Her career will dwarf mine, so we'll need to follow that. She's Polish, and Chicago has the highest population of Poles outside of Warsaw. It makes her quite valuable here.

As much as I love my guns, there ARE more important things in life.

Heretic ; Iowa doesn't have a FOID, but no class II or classIII. Thinking about moving someplace more like America.

I have no issues living in Iowa. I have had a Concealed Carry Licence for 40 years and tons of guns. Sure I can't own a DD, Silencer, SBR or Machinegun but no biggie. Saves me paying the feds extra money.
We have great sweet corn and live near Chicago if'n we want big city visits to ride the subway and see Cub games.

I lived in IL a couple years and even had a FOID Card. I kept my Iowa licence too.

Out of staters can't buy or even handle a gun in IL because of the FOID. I go visit the in-laws and I look at the fishing stuff in Gander because of it. I always buy my ammo here at home before heading up there to meet my BiL's for pheasent season in IA.:banghead:
