I was given permission from the significant other to turn a spare bedroom into a gun cleaning/gun storage/man cave room. I built a bench for cleaning(and reloading if decide to peruse it), and turned a closet into storage.

I need some suggestions for some decor, things to fill the room. It feels a little empty to me.

You need this:

No man cave is complete without the fragile leg light!

Depends on your gunroom. Some people like it to look like a shop, with worktables, tools, and pegboard everywhere. I go for the "TR study" vibe, with bookshelves and high quality luxurious furnishings. A good table lamp, a sturdy desk, bookshelves, nice mahogany...

With the sloping ceiling you can get a lot of good light-bounce and make it very warm with floor and table lamps, especially if you angle something at the surface and use it as a giant reflector. This will also provide you a tremendous advantage for photography, especially if you put something against the inner wall to serve as a platform or worktable.

I advise against covering the ceiling with gun-diagram posters or the like. It'll make it look like a teenagers room and kill your light.

I like the sports bar theme. Go to your local sports bar that is decorated nicely. Sit and eat..... Look around and then change the decor in your mind to guns, military, etc. To me shelves with stuff stacked on them is not the way to go. If you have any historical items from your family, give them a prominent spot. I used pictures from a ww2 coffee table book and framed them. I looked for items in the pictures that I have. In my opinion, if you decorate this way, the stuff looks good, but doesn’t prohibit the use of the room.

Mine is still in progress, but it’s getting there. POST PICTURES! It’s a subject that is hard to find on google.

Thanks for the replies, I think I am leaning more towards the "shop look" mainly because I don't think I can justify the cost of a full remodel to give it the nice "study" look. Any pictures you all have if much appreciated.

A more secure door on the closet where the guns are?

Just thinking out loud. I assume the room door locks, but it probably would be nice to have another level of security in case of a burglary.

Does Cabela's (or other) offer a calendar?
Fridge
TV
leather chair and/or sofa
deadbolt on door
file cabinet

What happens when you soil that purty carpet, or your wife gets a whiff of those gun cleaning solvents (she's NOT pregnant, right)?

In terms of the carpet, I am thinking about buying one of those manufacturers area rugs/mats you see in gun shops. I also have a window to the right of the bench that I can put a fan in for ventilation. Good ideas on the fridge and tv, already have a sofa which you can see in the corner of the closet photo(Dog is sitting on it).

I would add some bookshelves for any gun related books or magazines you might have; also some other shelving units to hold cleaning supplies, parts bins, tools, etc. so the bench doesn't get overcrowded with clutter. Have plenty of decent lighting as well as good ventilation for when you're cleaning. Maybe in the future you might want to add a small gunsafe in the closet space along with a solid door for that area.

I'm Jealous!

I don't see any security though. I would scrap all the fancy stuff until you install a good gun safe. That man cave is worthless the minute someone breaks in and takes all those beautiful guns. Protect your investment first, then have fun :)

You will need to design a few task specific areae:

1) Media: computer, stereo, tv, commo,
2) Work: bench(es), stool or chair, storage for parts and materials,
3) Ambience: posters, collections, mini-fridge,

Try drawing the room out to scale, using different layouts. This only helps you understand how the room works AND how it does not. I have had great success using solid core blank slab doors for work table tops and building frames from nice 5/4 lumber. Stain and varnish to match the casings. Avoid old metal file cabinets.

Start with the safe. it is the heaviest and will probably stay in the same spot forever. Add duplexes now, if necessary. Consider potential hiding places. And the last thing: lighting, lighting, lighting.

Good luck.

this would not work in your current room, but, the wife an i will retire to some land we have in the country in tn in a few years. i am going to build/have built a tornado room onto our house that has access from inside the house. it will be concrete walls, ceiling, etc and i will put one of those six panel vault doors on it(they have them at midway, look like a regular interior door except they are steel and have a remote combo lock). i will make that the gun room except in tornado situations we can spend the night in it on an air mattress. also doubles as a panic room if we find ourselves overrun by zombies ;) bill

Our next house we will most likely build and I am thinking of doing something similar in the basement.

Safe Room Construction Plans and Specifications

For those who have mentioned the desire for a safe room whether it be to protect your arms or butts from a tornado or zombie, plans are available for free at this FEMA site:
http://www.fema.gov/plan/prevent/saferoom/shplans/

You may even be able to get "Uncle" to fund it: Fed funding programs that provide funds for safe room construction include U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Disaster Loans, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Block Grant funds, Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgage insured financing, and the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP). Same site as above.

carpets and powder are a poor combination--unless you have a vacuum with the motor behind the collection bag. rather get the padded shop mats from home depot. package of 6-yard square are generally $20. and leave the sneakers you wear in the room; no need tracking 'stuff' into the outer home areas. the bench will gain weight when you stock up on bullets. closing up the closet helps you to have company for loading and keep he guns seperate--which is a good idea even when working alone. as to security, the walls are the weak point even if you put in a solid core door.
looks nice so far, good luck

A more secure "safe"

Wall to Wall home built workbench. You can't have enough room for reloading and working on firearms.

Line that closet in Cedar and turn it into a big humidor.

Ventaillation fan so as not to PO the wife.

Don't buy a safe: Reinforce the 'under the stairs' enclosure and add a sturdy safe door.

Some welding will be required; do it yourself if possible. Second choice is a trusted friend. The Yellow pages are not an option for this.

DO NOT USE CARPET! Make the floor light colored, lineolumn, wood, tile, ect. If you work on guns, small(expensive) parts will fly around and get lost in carpet. Make it easy to find. Also, if you can, replace the door frame with a metal one and hang a fire rated solid door that opens out, with a comercial lock set. That way you slow them down or at least make them buy better tools. Have the door open out so it can't be kicked in.

4)necessary man-cave items including but not limited to: TV,reclining chair, fridge, posters of old-movie trailers like Stallone's "Cobra" or anything with Mopars on it !!
