I just bought a Thompson auto ordinece tommy gun .45 mi. for $700. Was this a good deal? The weapon is in excellent shape and the action is on the side not the top. What do you think?

If you're looking for a fun range toy I'd say you have a decent one. I probably wouldn't have picked the .45 ACP chambering as those run almost 2x of 9mmP, but each to his own.

Pistol cal carbines are fun and I tend to run a few rounds thru mine. I bet your will handle even better if you get it SBRed and rebarrel it with the original SMG barrel, like I did .

I assume this was a semi-auto with 16"+ barrel? New or used?

These Kahr Arms guns don't resemble "real" Thompsons very much and the reputation for quality is not very good. They can't even use unmodified original magazines.

But if you like it, what can I say?

Can't tell ya, pics/ details?

For a new AR/carbine $700 sounds like a decent price.

Brian's pics make me want an UZI now.......hate to hi jack, but how are the irons?

If the bolt is on the side, it's an M1. That's about the going price. Did you get extra mags with it? If not, you'll have to modify either your magazine catch or the mag. They're fun even with the long barrel. I have the 1928 version and haven't had any issues so far.

Yeah, it is the M1. It was used but is in excellent shape. I took it to the range today and as far as accuracy, it is dead on. One problem that I did have is that it would fire one round and then not chamber another round. I tried another magazine but the other magazine wouldnt lock in place. I did only get the M1 with one magazine. I have taken the gun to a gun smith to get the problem fixed. The reason I bought it because these guns were used in WWII and I as a veteran wanted something from that time era. I did look on line and they run for about $1200. Is this really a steal like I think it is? BTW it is a semi auto with the longer barrel.

It's most likely the mags. They dremel out the catch and if it's too loose, it will jam. I think it was tommygunner.net that had replacement catches that let you use military mags without modifying them.

It's not a steal but definitely a good deal.

Stock Uzi has peep sights for 100 and 200m. If you drill out the 100m peep to .25" or so it gets much faster with some loss of precision at longer range.

I've beaten AR optics users at close range with it. I've also gotten hits at 220 yards at the local rifle matches. Over 200 it's pretty much game over as 9mmP is diving like a rock at that range or farther.

Thanks pokie, I will check that out. When I did check the mags, it did feel like there was some play in there.

Hey all haven't been here in a while. All weapons listed are niche CQE weapons very cool. Might as well throw a Draco AK pistol in the group for consideration. Inexpensive but all do well in CQE.

My budget is limited, I thought about a Draco and retro fit the lower with a modded hand grip. Know it violates 992r but I'd put back oringinal stock on. I'd just have it ready of things got really weird. Could do the swap out quickly if needed. The front lower hand grip and throw on a slant muzzle break, would definitely throw it in the same group on the cheap and be a very controlable/dependable weapon with a whole lot of stopping power. Not trying to hijack the thread, just another twist on small CQE weapons. Have a good weekend.

I bought a brand new one for that exact same price in 1989. Factor in inflation and you did good. I traded mine for an HK 91 shortly there after buying it because of the power to weight factor.

Yeah, surplus mags need the hole in the back opened up towards the top of the magazine. I had a fixture for use in a drill press with an end mill, but have managed to lose it (the fixture, not the drill press, or oddly enough, the end mill). I set mine up so there is about 1/16th gap between the bolt and feed lips. Eats any brass cased ammo I feed it, even cast SWC.

Dont bother with AL cased blazer ammo. They get pretty mangled on the mile long feedramp.

The Kahrs I've looked at didn't impress me any. Felt like the steel was softer, and the blueing sucked in comparison to the AOs I've owned and had my hands on.

Note that the Kahr Thompsons I've looked at were still stamped Auto Ordnance. You have to look at the location to see which company made yours, Kahrs are made in Worcester MA, the Auto Ordnance gun were made in West Hurley, NY.

Having owned two, I'd pay $700 for a well-used West Hurley Thompson. I dont think I'd pay that for a new Kahr.

I used a rat tale file to fix my magazines. .45 ACP makes a lousey rifle round past 50 yards. The extra weight would be a boon on full auto to help dampen recoil but on semi it is not needed. Trade this ponderous antique for something in .308.

Mine is the West Hurley Thompson. I have never had so much fun shooting something in my life, and I have shot alot of different weapons. I did not know that about the mags though. Should I get a couple mags and make a tighter fit with drilling holes in the mags to make it where they are snug. if that makes sense.

That I can not do. I already have a nice .308. The M1 was just something I wanted from the WWII ERA. This is truely an awesome weapon to fire at the range. BTW .308 ammo cost a whole lot more.

That is about all I have shot in my Tommy, and it loves it...That being said, the absolute worst money I have ever spent was on the 50 rnd drum, it is good for 4 rounds at a time, then drop, use a screwdriver, and try again. Sportsmens Guide has the original 30 rnd sticks for cheap, all they need is alittle modifying on the catch hole like mentioned above...my .02 worth

I don't know a thing about the single action Thompsons that are on the market today. Did get to shoot the real ones fairly often when I was in the Navy. Govt accounting required that we shoot our quarterly ammo allotment or loose it so about every two or three months we'd break out the ships arsenal, throw chunks of wood off the fantail when underway and spend a afternoon spending the taxpayers money chasing pieces of 2X4 in the water.

Must have been a good time. I wish I could shoot one of the auto's because shooting this Thompson tommy gun made me feel like Tom Hanks in saving private ryan!!!:neener: Awesome!!!

"Felt like tom Hanks" I''m getting old. When we got shoot all the Thompsons I don't think he'd been born yet or if he was his Mama was still changing his diapers. Shooting the old Thompsons never got old however.
