Snake Loads! What do you use.

Having read an older post here, I'm looking forward to loading my own Buck 'n Ball combos now that I have my Reloading setup ready.

Cardstock cut to the ID of the shell, (the OP suggested using a sharpened case in a drill-press chuck, cuts perfect circles)

Card over powder, Birdshot, then capped with a soft lead ball, just large enough to shave the edges off and seat well when pressed into position.

Lead fouling, sure.. not something you want to sit and put through your gun all day... but you have a mix of both worlds, a Slug for coyote or any approaching rabid animal, and a decent spray of shot with it.

Edit/afterthought... Anyone with experience capping a load like this with a standard Boool-lit to aid feeding in a Semi? Primarily these loads DO go into Revolvers, but options are nice.

Don't.

There is not nearly enough room in a normal length auto-pistol case for powder, wad, shot, and a bullet too.

The only way to make usable auto-pistol shot shells I know of is to cut off rifle cases and star or roll crimp them.
.308 or 30-06 = .45 ACP

.223 case cut & turned down to make .380 ACP shot load.

I use the plastic shot capsules from speer for 38/44 loads and use .308 gas checks for shot loads in a 32 mag case. I loaned a buddy a box of 50 of the 32 mag loads and he has 3 left. Every shot has been a dead snake. He killed two in 5 minutes one day. I pretty much just use #12 shot I bought from BPI before stuff went stupid crazy on prices a couple of years ago.

I believe the slacks have kevlar reinforced fabric in them or something similar. To be perfectly honest I never gave slithering things much thought.

MCGunner, You'll have to give me your RATTLER POT PIE recipe. You have almost talked me into it.

It's a lot better fried. Does taste like Chicken. Like eating Chicken backs. Killed+skinned a 5 footer years ago, in SW Fla. that surprised me, walking a fire ditch while Quail hunting..Bill..

M97 cowboy loads.

This is da je vu all over again.

Quite a while back with the snake guy puttin' us on a guilt trip :).

I have three Min Pins that takes my wife for walks on the ranch (2 1/2 acres :)) late evening and early morning. I have two granddaughters that visit. I let black snakes and garter snakes go. The others I don't even holler "Freeze". I have been known to shoot them in the back.

I go with CCI 22mag shot in a single six. I stepped on a copperhead once, fired six 22LR out of a single six, didn't get him or my feet so now shot shells. Besides shot don't hurt your feet with a decent pair of boots. I would bet Grandma killed more copperheads in her garden than I have seen with a hoe and it's hard to aim at your feet looking down with bifocals. Can't carry a hoe with a 6' handle in a holster and they don't taste like chicken, is starving a taste?

I have been in plenty of snake habitat, from playing in the woods as a kid, to doing canine SAR volunteer work in later years. I have seen plenty of snakes, but never felt the need to kill one. I have carried sticks for dealing with them as needed, but have never had to harm a snake with a stick.

As a kid, I did catch quite a few snakes bare-handed. I was a kind of amateur zoologist in my younger days. Perhaps that is why I became comfortable with snakes, and feel no need to kill them, unless, of course, I feel threatened.

I have used a CCI handgun shotshells, in .22 LR, to kill a rat.

Now that I have thought further, I do think I may have carried .38 Special CCI shotshells
as the first round or two in a .38 or .357 revolver, when having to deal with extremely thick vegetation, with the thought that I and a poisonous snake might be unable to get out of each other's way, especially with a dog in the equation. Regardless of whether I actually carried these shotshells this way, or just thought about it, I never got crossways with a snake. Our SAR dogs have passed on, and it has been a few years since we have been checking thickets for human remains.

I don't kill snakes unless they are venomous and in or immediately around the house. They are beneficial to the environment and flee when given the chance.

44 special out ah my 3.5" bulldog ... killed a rat at 15', a couple cotton mouths at 8' out to 15' once. I've eaten muskrat, raccoon, possum, wabbit, venison, bear, several different species of birds and ducks, squirrel, badger, woodchuck, even a porcupine once !! < don't ask > but I an't never ate no snake yet!! I was taught you eat what you kill and you kill what you eat ... but  ...... sorry Mr. Snake your the only one :uhoh: oh and there's a couple rats I didn't eat either :barf:

Single Action Heritage LR cylinder with Super Colibris. Works every time with a small pop. Really disables them quick, but only if they are close to the garden/poisonous/close to the house.

You gotta love revolvers. Load combinations in the cylinder never fail like they do in some autos. When you pull the trigger it goes bang. Cock the hammer again (if SA), and it goes bang. Never a failure to eject. LOL :)

I buy the CCI/Speer shot capsules and load them with #5 lead shot in .44 and .45, #6 in .38. This actually works pretty well on pigeons, too, and doesn't poke holes in the barn roof like a .410 will.

I've found the .22 LR and .22 Mag shotshells to be good mouse medcine to about 10 feet, but wouldn't count on them for snakes.
