For a while. :(

On August 10th I will be getting two hernias repaired. One is above my belly button that has been repaired once already. The other is a new belly button hernia. Looks like I will get mesh on both sides of the abdominal wall with basic component separation.

I'm figuring 3 months before I can really get out and work the triggers and the loading bench.

I will shoot some leading up to the surgery. But as they have got worse over the last year, my shooting has suffered. It seems everything in the human body is hooked to the belly one way or the other. :)

I hope to be actively shooting again by early Oct. With the ability to be able to (maybe) get some pistol or modern rifle hunting in during whitetail season.
 
Funny how everything we did in youth to our bodies comes back as we age to remind us. Good luck with the operation.
 
Some may recall that I recently bought a friend of mine his first hunting rifle. Well, his own personal firearms coach (his dad) recently tore the triangular tendon in his right wrist and will have to have it slung up for 3 months. So while he can give pointers, he can't actually SHOW.

Sucks, because I know he was itching to test out the rifle and sight it in.
 
Never give up, never surrender! I've had 8 inches of intestine removed due to a blockage, and both knees replaced. I'm pushing 62 years old and still hunt and fish. I shot a bear 5 1/2 months after the knees were replaced, in the north woods of Maine. Last week I finished ripping 50 feet of old bushes out of my backyard so I could have a nice fence installed. I need to lose some weight, so I'm joining a gym. Too cheap to BUY an eliptical machine, an no where to put it. My beer drinking will be done when they nail the lid shut, not before! Good luck with your surgury. Been there with the same hernias and they are back. Mesh didn't hold past 2 years. You should be able to stand or sit and shoot sooner then that. May just need some one to tote your range bag. I would not go whole hog with with a 50cal or 12 gauge tho. Should be able to get some light plinkin in tho. Best of luck..

I think that is a vaginal mesh.

Good luck on the surgery, abdominal surgery isn't the most fun. I've had the appendix out, but laproscopically, so I only have three half inch scars.

I'd think you'd be able to shoot .22's though pretty soon.

Chuck Dye: Thanks for the warning! I've known for a while this was going to have to be fixed. And I have already warned my surgen about the recalled mesh. We are not going there. :)

To our friends: There will be no air guns, .22's or dry fire for a bit. No reloading for several weeks. This is not my first rodeo concerning hernia. I know for a fact every thing in your body in some way shape or forum is connected to your belly. Being mesh'ed on the inside and out side offer great stability. Nothing but time heals hardcore muscle damage.

I have found in the last 6 months it's been harder and harder for me to shoot the bull. And it's all because of my belly. The hernia's are throwing off my natural balance and body mechanics. And I can't move worth a darn anymore. Even this semi youngin, sway back, bucket butt Arkie in Ok has to throw in his hand. The sick thing is,,,, if I had got the first hernia refixed I would have had to now have the second one fixed. Now I get one really big one of two components for one. :)

Here are two links to the wife's first day at the range with her new 60-Pro. At 54 she is bad ass. This monday she turns 55 and has sworn to protect me as I protect her with her as my back up. She has turned out to be a model with her mim 60 not to mention a full house mag lady. What a angle! She has come a long way since these vids.

You can see my busted gut in the vid's. But you also see a granny shoot her heart out. With 11 months to train. She now shoots retail worthless .357's like they are weak lead. And has no issue with full house mags. Not to mention she can now move and shoot full house mags from her little J, mim and hil hole pistol. I had to get her trained up. :)

Now I can rest for a few weeks! :
 
Mesh, ouch. I just had my umbilical done in February and even just using the stitch method it took about a month before I could do 'normal' things again, like shooting.
 
Chris I can share with you. Trying to be so called normal after a stitch fest a month later is a big mistake IMHO.....
 
Back in April I had triple bypass surgery done. One month later, before I could drive, I had my wife take me to the LGS and I bought a 1911. I had to wait 6 more weeks to shoot it though! I did get some 22 trigger time while I healed.
 
You're going to learn just how perishable a skill shooting is.

Me? A pinched nerve. Took 6 months before I could pick up a gun again.
Still trying to hit the side of the barn from inside.

I had a double inguinal hernia repaired back in May and I'm back to IDPA competitions... lost a bit of speed with the 6 weeks off, but I was able to start static shooting at 4 weeks - just couldn't wear the holster, run around, or even really carry my full load of gear. This all depends on the doctor, the procedure, and you. Make sure to move around despite the pain as soon as you can it will help your recovery.

Word of warning, don't have your computer and credit card anywhere near you while on the pain meds... still trying to figure out why I needed those 4 sets of Ginsu knives. :D
 
I had two Rotator cuff's repaired in 06 and 08 and I learned to shoot 1 handed. Now I have Rheumatoid Arthritus in my shoulders and wrists. Until I get it under control for which I may not, I can only shoot 22"s. It's a real bummer!!
