Im looking to purchase some 22 short rifles. Right now I have one a Glenfield model 25 which is great but i want a new/newer style of gun that shoots 22 shorts and LR. The reason is simple I have a small pest problem and like keeping my dirty work quiet. I also like shooting discreetly in the back yard.

Remington 552 and 572 will shoot shorts. So will a Winchester 9422, or, AFAIK, other tube-fed lever guns.

volquartsten makes a kit to convert a 10/22 to run shorts...comes with a new bolt, spring, and magazine

unfortunately, they cost about 250 bucks and brownells has stopped carrying them

you can however still get the magazines ($45) if you want to run a 10/22 as a straight pull bolt action

.22short CB rounds are quieter than many air rifles, and you get a repeater that can be used for non-quiet applications if needed.

But for nothing but casual backyard shooting and pest control, an air rifle might be a good choice.

Here's another vote for the Henry 001. Never shot shorts through it, but it's been 100% with everything else. It also has the smoothest action of any rifle I own.

If you want quiet get a CZ 452 Ultra Lux. It won't cycle Shorts but with its 28.6" barrel, CB Longs are deathly quiet.

Along with the tube fed magazine rifles there is always the option of the single shot rifles. For example my club has a youth program that uses the Savage Mk I FVT. With the target peep sights these are amazingly accurate rifles. You'd have no issues at all with hitting any sort of rodent size pest dead center at any sort of backyard distances.... Even if your backyard is up to hobby farm size. And if you don't want new there's any number of older single shot options. Single shot rifles don't care what you put into the barrel be it LR, Long, Short or CBCaps.

Marlin 25n is hard to beat; very accurate for a good price. It will cycle CB longs through the mag. CB longs are very quite. Any shorts have to be loaded one at a time.

The reason is simple I have a small pest problem and like keeping my dirty work quiet.
Make sure you get a good clean kill; you don't want your neighbor's cat running off wounded to die on their front porch!

BTW, CCI CB shorts and CCI CB longs have exactly the same ballistics and noise levels. The only reason I can think of to use the shorts is to fit more rounds in a tubular magazine. The longs have the advantage of feeding through a greater variety of .22 rifles, especially those with box magazines.

You could use 22lr subsonics in a ruger 10/22(or any other 22lr, but it's the best), they are quieter than some of my air guns!!, and kill with authority.

you don't need 22 shorts for a quiet gun. In fact, 22 shorts are MUCH louder than subsonic rounds. IMO, subsonic longs are quieter than subsonic long rifles.

I don't know what these people are talking about that claim a subsonic longrifle or a subsonic long is quieter than an air rifle. That is just plain not true.

The BL22 handles shorts. The Remington 550 will run with shorts and if exceptionally clean will even run with 22 short CB's. The Winchester Model 74 was made in a 'short only' model. A few years ago Browning made a run of SA22s in 22 short.

You're obviously missing out on the experience of shooting CB shorts (or longs) in a closed-action rifle.
Quieter than some air rifles might be a more accurate statement, I suppose.

I would disagree with that. Out of a medium to long barrelled .22 rifle, I find CCI CBs quieter than my air rifle. The Super Colibris are certainly quieter. Maybe it depends on the air rifle (mine is a Beeman R-9 .20).

doesn't matter. neither one is quieter than an air rifle
More hogwash! CB's, from a barrel of 22" or more, is quieter than most air rifles. Particularly quiet out of the 28" CZ mentioned above.

10/22 with a 28" long barrel and sub-sonic rounds will be almost as quiet as one with a suppressor.
