Thompson Center Icon vs Remington 700

So ive gotten a little bit of cash to play with, which is getting pretty rare these days, and ive decided i need a rifle for long distance targets / big game. Ive been doing some looking around and narrowed it down to two. The T/C Icon Weather Shield in .300 win mag or the Remington 700 Sendero SF II also in .300 win mag. The Remington is most exspensive of the two at around 1400 msrp, the T/C is around 900 when i can find one online. I have an Icon in .308 and its by far the most accurate rifle ive ever shot. Im probably the only person in the world who calls himself an advid shooter and doesnt have any experiance at all with a Remington 700. Anyone have any comments or advice? Im pretty well convinced on the .300 win mag for the caliber because ive shot it the most and its about the most readily availble and among the cheapest magnum loads. Maybe also the Savage model 116 FHSS, I had a Savage for awhile but traded it for my T/C. Any thoughts or opinions would really be appreciated. Thanks
 
I sold my last 700, a CDL, a couple years ago. Loved the classic look and feel of the rifle but it was not very accurate at all. Personally, I will not buy another new Remington for the time being.

Picked up an Icon last fall to replace the 700. Had a problem with the first one and had to send it back to T/C. T/C had a new rifle at my dealer in less than 3 weeks. I have been thrilled with it. Very accurate and easy to shoot rifle. My 12 year old son loves to shoot it and will probably wind up talking me out of it.
 
Sweet. Seems pretty one sided for the T/C. Like I said I have the Precision Hunter in .308 and love the crap out of it. Its an awesome bench rifle and a friend of mine has invited me out to Texas for some hog hunting this fall. I cant wait to try it out. How about the Savage model 116 FHSS against the Icon weather shield? Any thoughts, or should i just get another Icon and call it a day?
 
Shooting Times this month has a shoot-out of all the budget rifles under 500 dollars.read up,. its interesting. biker
 
Also the more Ive been digging Ive started to hear rumors about Remington cutting corners in quality control to save a few bucks.

This is why I'd go with the Icon. The older 700's aren't bad, but I wouldn't recommend a new one.

That being said, comparing the Icon to the Savage you threw in would be a tough choice for me, but ultimately I'd most likely end up with the Savage. I've yet to see one that hasn't shot amazing right out of the box, and the accu trigger is a pretty good trigger. Ontop of that, they are very easy to change the barrels on yourself if that need should ever arise.

Savage rifles are very good accuracy wise my model 12 will shoot along side my Thompson center hunter as an equal,however I do feel the fit/finish & overall quality control has to go to the TC.
 
T/C is going through changes....

They shut down the NH plant and from what I've heard, are being run by capital management in the same manner as everyone else (i.e. Remington, Marlin, Bushmanster, etc..)
 
Well that sucks! Does that mean they are scaling back production and cutting quality to stay affordable? They are owned by S&W though, one of the oldest and biggest makers in the country if not the world, how could they be struggling? I guess the hard times are hitting gun makers harder than i thought.
 
S&W closed T/C's Rochester, New Hampshire plant and moved it to the S&W Springfield, Mass plant. Seems like the move was supposed to be complete by the end of this year.
 
I probably got it wrong about the capital management part...

But any time you move a manufacturing operation, you risk losing good people and that's what is at the center of any successful quality program.
 
What do you guys think about the FN TSR XP rifle in .300 WSM? I own a couple of FN products and have had great luck with them. This was one rifle that was on my short list that got cut from the line up do to lack of online reviews and also noone i know has one for me to fondle.

Some things to consider. Wonder what Eliphalet Remington would think of the firearms the company he started is producing today?

Remington has been around since the early 1800's....Beretta since the 1500's. Pretty amazing to think about.

I just have to wonder, what is the deal with having the 30TC developed, when only Hornady makes ammo for it, and the rifles also come in .308...and the 30TC won't do anything the .308 won't....

Or why they now brought it out in 6.5 Creedmoor, when again, only Hornady makes ammo for it, and most of that is match ammo and not hunting ammo. Same with Ruger. Why aren't that cambering their rifles in .260 Rem instead?
