I'm in the panhandle of WV, closer to most of MD and VA than the southern parts of WV. No Cabela nearby, and every store I've checked doesn't have primers or powder. I don't see the point in paying an extra $20 just to be sure USPS doesn't set my products on fire.

Yup, the Hazmat fee sucks, but whatcha gonna do?
If you can get a buddy or two to order with you, a big order makes it hurt a lot less.
I just today, rec'd a big shipment from Powder Valley.
Their prices are about the best I've found anywhere.

Yeah I would just save some money up and do a big order doesn't take much to mitigate the 25 dollar fee. Also go to the gun range and find others that reload also, shoot some guns, talk, shoot some more, and make some friends. Then put together and order with them.

+1 on what Hondo 60 said,the prices at Powder Valley if you order say 3K primers and a few lbs. of powder are enough so that you pretty much break even as to what it would cost you local. If you buy a few extra K of primer and a couple more lbs. of powder you actually come out ahead.
I saved $50 on my primer order and $35 on my powder order from what those items would have cost me local if they actually had it in stock at the time. After taking out for Hazmat and shipping I still saved $40.

Another happy Powder Valley customer here!If you can't make a large enough order to offset the haz fee,you might check out any local gun shows.Be careful at gun shows and be sure you are buying new,fresh stuff.Oh yeah,Powder Valley,and some others will ship powder and primers in the same package.It sounds like you are in a really remote area! And I don't see the point of making half a dozen round trips to a local store just to I can pay 30-100% more for powder and primers in small quantities and still come out cheaper than the hazmat fee - unless you like looking all over the place for your stuff and waiting in line. Then, again, ooops! There goes the savings on time and gas. Buy Wolf or Tulammo primers online, and you'll save money even on small orders.

If no range contacts, then google for local shooting competition sites. They should be able to steer you in the right direction.

That UPS/USPS truck always put's a grin on my face, especially watching the driver when there are bullets weighing 60-100# in the order..

And they know they're the only place to get powder & primers.

Sm pistol primers were $20 instead of $38.
The powder you can only get in 1lb containers (for $32 each)
I paid $105 for 8 lbs.

Like Hondo 60 I can save more than enough by ordering from Powder Valley to make up for the hazmat fee.If I buy as much as 2000 primers and 1lb of powder then I come out ahead over LGS prices. I use some Wolf and Tula primers too so I save even more (and they go bang just as well as the others for me).

I live in the northern panhandle. They think your nuts for not having more than 1 gun. Walmart sells reloading supplies in my area. I use them when I only need a pound of powder or 1 box of bullets.
That's what I'd like to figure out (how much would it cost to drive). If it's on the way to any given freelance shoot I do, then it won't cost anything to drive there.
I'm just reloading .38sp/.357 for now.

At this time, I shoot at home when I can (back at family's property). I'd like to go to a local range, but right now they're all very expensive. There's a new one, I'd like to see how much they end up going for.
Thanks, I'll have to check those out. I wasn't very interested in shows after I realized I can only buy long guns (seriously, what a moronic system/society we live under). Frederick is fairly close, though.

Not many local hardware places left, and Walmart doesn't have em, though I did check.

You sound really bummed out and need to be a little bit more optimistic about your circumstances. If it were me, I would do what ever is necessary to get my hands on those needed reloading supplies, legally of course. There is always a way, and means, if you really want to reload.

I buy primers and powder locally for the most part, for two major reasons:
1) buying in bulk to mitigate hazmat fees means storing in bulk, and I'm not set up with enough safe storage for that.
2) if we all by everything on line to save $ over our LGS, there'll eventually be no LGS.

When my LGS charges $43 per thousand of primers that I can buy from Weidners for $23 or Powder Valley for $25 (or even less for Wolf and Tula) , or powder from him at $26 /lb that PV has for $16, I'm not putting him out of business, HE is. I'd be willing to pay a little more to buy locally but not that much. At his rates I don't have to buy much from PV to overcome the hazmat charge. I have about 20,000 primers on hand and about 25 lbs of powder (that isn't much to some but a good supply for me) and anytime I make an order I get a little extra. I got caught short in the shortage and don't aim to again.
