****The best powder for a .270 winchester****

A guy at work swears Reloder 22 is best in his .270 Win.

Have only used H4831 and like the results. It is a popular cartridge with lots of options for it.

Hey fellow Oklahoman, I have been loading a 270 Winchester for about 33 years and my current deer hunting load is 56 grains of IMR 4831 with a Speer 130 grain boattail bullet in Winchester cases with a Remington 9 1/2 primer. Very accurate and works great for deer hunting. BW

H4350 for 130 gr.
H4831 for 150 gr.

You can substitute H for IMR.

H4350 or IMR 4831 seem to be most popular. My rifle prefers IMR 4831. It's going to vary by rifle and bullet profile. You're going to need to experiment. I use Hornady 130gr SP as my hunting round and I tried both.

I recently worked up a handload for 130 grainers. IMR 4350 did a fantastic job.

There are quite a few powders that the .270 will like dependant on bullet weight.

I like the RL series for velocity, RL19 up to 130 gr and RL22 for heavier. IMR4350 and IMR4831 have worked great too, just not as much velocity as the RL.

H4831 is another that will work. I've only used the above powders.

WW760 works best for me. 51.5 gr. under a Sierra 130gr.Pro Hunter bullet for deer. Sub 1 MOA easy.

I used H4831sc for years with 140gr Noslers. Three years ago i switched to Reloader 22 and like it better but i also switched to 140gr SST's at the same time. That combination shoots a little better in my gun. For light bullets in the .270 win. (90-100gr) i use IMR4320.

Just curious, what was the maximun amount of IMR4831 you used with that bullet?

When I couldn't get H450 any more, I tried many powders and settled on RL22.

I am using 55gr of H4831sc......with 150gr speer BTSP..seems to group well for me...I will say that 56gr grouped equally as well...but figured I would go lighter for my wife

You really need to try several powders and bullet combinations to see which works best in your rifle. That's the fun of reloading!

I have a lot of reloading years behind the .270 win. and the best performer's have been IMR-4350, RL19, and RL22. My best of those three has been RL19 and RL22. If I had to choose between those two I would base it on availability over any other element. My reasoning is because those two delivered almost exact velocity and accuracy, and pressures appear to be in the same range.
A stout charge of one of those slow burning powders behind a 130 gr. bullet will give you 3,150 fps plus, depending on what elevation you are using them at. At 2,500' elevation I average about 3,160 fps and at 7,500' velcoity was average 3,230 fps. All of my .270 loads have been fired out of a 22" barrel, Rem. 700's and Savage 110's as well as a couple of other simular actions.

I concur with Bwana John. For 130 -140 IMR 4350. Fro 150 grains, H4831sc.

I have nothing new to suggest only that H4831sc works well for me with 130 grainers. Never needed a heavier or lighter bullet in 270. I played with reloader 22 with good results but if it aint broke dont fix it so im still using h4831sc.

I've had good luck with H4831sc. Just like the hodgdon manual says, "it goes with the 270 like ice cream does with apple pie".

Sure, so long as you don't mind giving up 100 to 200 fps out of the muzzle. IME, slower burning rates provide better velocity, especially with 130 gr and 150 gr bullets. Now if Zeke is talking the Sierra 90 gr HP, I have no quibble with his statement.
