I'm new to reloading (everybody is once). I have an XL650 Dillon and reloading .223. It's been going ok, but was having a hell of a time with the primers. some went in just fine, some did not. I had no idea that I had a bunch of military cases. Although I've read a lot about it, and even purchased a dillon super swage (for the day that I purposely bought militay cases), I didn't realize that I actually had a bunch of it. I watched a youtube and saw the NATO stamp. I checked my cases, and sure enough, they were crimped. I've disasembled and reasembled my press, prepped the hell out of the cases, read every blog and tid-bit of info I could find, and nothing worked. Turns out with one pull of the swage lever, all my problems went away. I actually laughed out loud. I learned a lot this weekend! good times.

There are other crimped primer pockets not just military case. Recently I had problems seating primers in new once fired Hornandy cases when I looked sure enough they were crimped. After reaming them out they took primers just fine. Just a heads up they were the Superperformance 40 grain .223 .

Just starting to reload .223 myself, and have already developed the habit of checking every lot for crimps. Many cases stamped .223 REM, to my surprise, are crimped.
You'll probably also find some brands just have looser pockets than others. The batch of 50 Federal (stamped F C .223 REM) I primed a couple of days ago are looser than average; I will load them light just this once and then recycle them. I'm confident the primers won't back out in my bolt rifle, but I have enough other makes that seat more securely. The lot of 50 Fiocchi I just primed are quite tight, even though they've never been crimped.
