Im wondering if anyone has the velocity of these rnds or the complete ballistics for 7.62x25 HP rnds they sound like a good self defense load so im wondering about the stopping power.

'Light 9mm' ?

That makes it sound underpowered, which it is anything but ... The 7.62x25 exceeded the penetration of every round listed under the "various 9mm JHP" tab, including Black Talons, while still managing to average nearly 1/2 inch in expended diameter.

The 7.62x25mm isn't much different, ballistically, than the High-Velocity .32-20 and, at one time, that load was considered adequate for close range deer hunting.

Look here:

It's about on par with a light 9mm.

Not sure I'd rely on this site for any information. Here are some gems I found while hitting a few favorite calibers:

http://www.brassfetcher.com/10mmAuto.html

"Featuring recoil similar to the .45ACP, the increased velocity of this cartridge plus the smaller diameter, increases its performance against hard barrier materials such as windshield glass and car doors. This increased penetration is obtained at the expense of decreased wounding efficiency in a tissue simulant, due to the higher velocity."

I hate it when my higher velocity results in less damage... err I mean "wounding efficiency".

"While not the best choice for the task, it is also possible to hunt dangerous game with the .50BMG, due to outstanding bullet penetration depths when using steel-core ammunition."

Tempted to let this one slide, as I know some if not all "ball" .50 BMG is mild steel core... I haven't looked, but I guess someone might have gone up against the Big Five with ammo loaded with demilled ball and/or surplus. They did only say "possible to", but I still think it sounds ridiculous.

yeah, your right, I mean what other place do you have at your fingertips for standardized ballistics testing...

YOU, nullcone, should put up a competing website with ballistics testing...
People go to Brass fetcher for the pictures, the commentary is purely secondary. Oh, and 10mm is known to kick esp. with 'full house' loads, WHICH out of a .45 (say 220 vs. 220) would not be.

brass fetcher

Well, to be honest I only looked at the commentary for a few rounds and wasn't impressed. I will peruse the gelatin pictures as well, maybe they do a better job with that.

Shadow, obviously I don't have the resources to put up such a website; but you know that. I can still have a well founded opinion about said site.

If the pictures/data are primary they should be on the first page and then they can make you click for the secondary (comments).

Not sure what you meant about the 220, but assuming you are talking 220 grain projectiles in each (at the same velocity and all other things equal) I agree... the .45 will have slightly less recoil and slightly more torque. I doubt anyone could tell the difference though.

I'll keep looking for another website for ballistic testing (kinda prefer box o' truth myself). How's that Litany working for you?

I did some testing of the Wolf Gold JHP (made by PRVI) and the results were quite good. Penetration and expansion were both good enough that my CZ52 lives in my BOB along with 10 magazines loaded with the HP ammo and there are several packs of surplus FMJ in there as well.

Calling the round a 9mm light is completely erroneous, it is a very potent handgun round. Out of my CZ52 it average 1638 fps which translates into over 500 foot pounds of muzzle energy. Your average 124 grain 9mm hits at about half that. The 7.62X25 is also one of very few handgun rounds that will penetrate a Kevlar helmet and in my testing a FMJ round penetrated 18 inches of soaking wet newsprint and was not recovered.

If the round has a fault it is the overall length of the cartridge, it is long enough it is not viable in any modern handgun. This results in a wide grip that is too much for some people. I find my CZ to be very comfortable in hand but others feel it is too large.

The 7.62x25mm loaded with a JHP isn't any longer than a .38 Super or 9x23 Winchester. JG Sales sometimes has a batch of M1911 conversions for sale. It would be nice if someone like Storm Lake came up with a barrel for the EAA Witness or Glock, but with surplus ammo all but gone, that is doubtful.

ummmm....you might want to check that. You might be able to make it that short with handloads but no factory 7.62X25 round is that short. You would have to really deep seat the bullet in the case which would make it tough to crimp unless the bullet used had a super short ogive.

Here is a factory FMJ, factory JHP, 38 Super that is close to max OAL, and a 9mm. Also as you can see the 7.62 will not really fit in a 38 Super mag without causing severe follower tilt.

There is no reason to question the .30x25 as it is well proven cartridge that from PPSH killed more "Hitlerrolls" then anything else in arms held category. I would be careful as two pistols readily available to accept this cartridge are old military ones designed to be carried with empty chamber in flap holsters. Do you want to ruin good pair of pants or worse?

Actually the CZ52 was designed to be carried with the hammer down on a loaded chamber, there is a reason it has a hammer drop on it. However the hammer drops wore and became unsafe. It can also be carried cocked and locked safely or as safely as any cocked and locked military handgun. Mine carries well in any open top 1911 holster. The biggest safety will always be the user.

You are right, 451D
Accurate Arms and Hodgdons both list 1.30" as overall length for both the 9x23 Winchester and 7.62x25mm while the .38 Super comes in a bit shorter at 1.275". A JHP bullet is a lot shorter than the FMJ though.
Further checking is needed.

My Cz-52 is in my nightstand right now loaded with JHP's. Everything I've shot with these rounds has been turned into a horrible mess.
