I just have to vent a bit as this one has me in a knot.

As a recap, I sent a S&W 1917 into Mahovsky's in PA to be refinished. I chose FedEx because they seemed the most reasonable of a set of unreasonable choices.

Cost as quoted at the depot: $85.83 which included a FedEx box, insurance and a direct signature required fee. I billed it to my FedEx account number.

Fast forward to yesterday, I get a special invoice from FedEx for $107.29 for this shipment. Needless to say I called them to complain about:

$11 charge for "non-account special billing". I was told I must have either used an incorrect account number or provided none. We went over it digit by digit, the numbers were correct. However, because I included a dash and a trailing 3 digits on the end, I was told the account number is wrong. I pointed out that the dash and 3 digits is included on ALL my correspondence with FedEx and it shows as such on my online account. Now I have to call BS on this: you mean to tell me a human being reading the airbill could not figure out my account number? These people are armed with computers for goodness sake, just look it up :banghead:. Finally, after much haranguing on my part, the clerk agrees to remove the charge, begrudgingly I might add.

$2.75 "residential delivery", $3.00 "DAS extended residential delivery", $12.49 "fuel surcharge". It was explained to me that the delivery address is "rural" and not in their "normal" delivery zone for an overnight shipment. At this point I'm about unglued. The depot clerk used a computer when she tariffed this shipment, I don't get why it's one dumb enough to not know the attributes of the address. All I could get out of this one is she agreed to remove the $2.75 residential delivery charge.

It just seems to me a company the size of FedEx, with all their computer systems they are so proud of, can figure out the price of a shipment and live with it. But really, I have the feeling this one crossed the desk of an anti who said "I'm gonna stick it to this guy".

OK, done venting, back to work :)

I ship handguns through my FFL... ends up costing me less to pay his fee plus USPS shipping... something like $35-40 insured.

Oh, I've learned my lesson on this one. I thought I'd learned it pretty good when I forked over $85, then FedEx decides to make me learn it even better with the new invoice. I get it FedEx, yessiree, I do.

FedEx will no longer allow 2nd day for handgun shipments.
Since when? I recently sent a revolver back to S&W for a recall issue. They had me use FedEx 2nd day, at S&Ws expense, so I have no idea of the cost. It was returned to me 2nd day FedEx as well. They also knew very well it was a handgun.

Oh yeah... the best lessons learned are those which hurt the most... been there, done that!!

You may be correct in a call tag situation, if the carriers have special relationships with gun manufacturers they can do whatever they wish. But, I should have been more clear, they will not allow Joe Citizen to ship a handgun 2nd day.

I tried 2nd day, she pulled the new-looking rule book out and showed me it was not allowed under the circumstances.

I recently had to send a revolver back to S&W for repair. They sent me a FedEX prepaid label.I honestly do not know what shipping "rate" it was for.I informed the clerk that it was firearm going back to the manufacturer for repair. She asked me if it had a "pin" in it.I thought quickly as I could see where she was going with this and played dumb,"pin??" I responded.Yes,we cannot ship firearms that have pins,Nope mine doesn't have one.She asked if it was unloaded or had ammunition.I stated no ammo present and S&W stated not to ship the gun with ammo.
Anybody run into this "pin" business?

i never advocated a straw purchase. they are (rightfully) illegal.

you are also assuming that it is against the law to ship a firearm 2nd day thru Fedex. It is not. it is just their policy not a law

i never said you should do it....just said what other people have done and what some repair gunsmiths advise in order to save money.

do you know WHY Fedex has this policy? because a number of years ago some of their employees in Atlanta were stealing firearms being shipped thru that depot. so they instituted the overnight policy to combat it. and WE pay the penalty for THEIR employees malfeasance.

exactly, be a shame to lose a gun with no recourse or repayment
Hate to say it but, had a guy I supervised years ago who always parked on the street and just paid the overtime tickets. He seemed like a smart guy so I inquired as to why he didn't park in the underground garage. Well, this guy had done the math and he was way better off taking the tickets, which were random, versus paying for parking, it wasn't even close.

Maybe it's the same with shipping guns, who knows. I don't ship enough of them, or enough cheap ones, to make it work out. But, FedEx and UPS are not exactly well know for losing packages either.

I know there's a difference between bending and breaking rules versus laws, I choose to do neither, and therefore I pay. Maybe it's that old saying where I grew up, "the long road draws sweat, the short cut draws blood".

Maybe so, but using the FFL and USPS is less anyway and you get the insurance. Unless you are dealing with a prepaid label, IMO, it just seems the better way to go.

Of course, the BEST way is to use a local gunsmith where you drop it off........

Dude you Payed way to much.

I am a FFL and the cost is nothing like $100,or even close, next time go threw a local FFL,Sorry to hear about Fedex hosing you.

As the one who got hosed (he hosee?) I hear ya. I did talk to two FFLs here, one said $100 and the other was unsure he could do it.

And that's when I met FedEx's employee of the year, Ben Dover :D

I have been advised by numerous reputable gunsmiths to strip the firearm and ship in multiple packages for servicing. There is a BIG difference between shipping the firearm for private sale (or "straw" purchasing) and shipping to a gunsmith for servicing/repair and return.

I could be wrong but the only difference is a NICS check. Pricewise, UPS & FedEx no longer allow the former, and want a king's ransom for the latter.

No matter how you disassemble it, the serial numbered frame or receiver remains a firearm.

Be that as it may, I'm merely repeating what I've been told by every gunsmith I've shipped to. I still pay the insane FedEx fees to cover my assets.

Then the "multiple gunsmiths" you have been dealing with are boobs. And, if they are telling you to ship via the Post Office that way, then they are also taking a chance of making you a Felon.

ONE of those packages is going to have THE part in it that is identified by ATF as a firearm ... doesn't matter at all that all the other parts are not attached to it.

THERE IS NO NEED TO PAY THE INSANE FEDEX/UPS OVER NIGHT FEES. Just find yourself a local FFL that will deal with the shipping for you. He can ship via USPS for a fraction of the cost of FedEx/UPS overnight. Even once you add in his service fee you'll pay probably 1/2 of what it would cost to ship on your own.
