45 super for self defense.

I love powerful guns and while I know the 45 acp is more than enough power, when you read about criminals today wearing body armor and taking other precautions against retaliation you want to have a little bit more bang for your buck. So just out of curiosity has anyone ever used 45 super for home defense or as a carry load in a defensive firearm. I probably wouldn't just because I think its a little bit overkill but still its an interesting thought.

.45 Super won't penetrate soft armor any better than standard service cartridges.

It is a good round, though, especially if you intend to hunt. Close in power to full bore 10mm. I use .45 Super in my S&W 4506 and 4516. 240 gr. SJHC at 1125 FPS for 670 ft/lbs.

That said, the 10mm offers more power and more capacity, as well as better ammo availability and platforms already built for it; Only the steel S&W 3rd gens can handle .45 super in stock form.

I know it won't but it's a little bit of a security blanket at least.

I use .45 Supers and .45 SMC in my 3inch 625 .45 acp.

Sure I'd use it for SD in a weapon set up for reliable use.

Just make sure you can control it well one handed.

If you can run it well, why not?

And MachIV the USP .45 is good to go with limited amounts of Super as well.

I'm sure others can handle a few, too. Kinda like proofing.

Point remains, the steel framed 3rd gens are the only factory .45 ACP guns credibly recognized as being able to digest super regularly in unmodified form without sustaining damage. A stouter spring would be a good idea if you were planning to run Super exclusively, though.

I had a USP .45, it was a robust gun. But I have no doubt it couldn't take the abuse my 4506 or 4516-1 will. They're just overbuilt.

I must be an odd guy but if I can afford body armor ... Why am I doing crime?
While I am sure it has happened as I am about to be barraged by some random news articles probably outlining the same crime ... I have always thought the proverbial five ex-Marine, turned uh ... Cripps? fireteam busting through your door with M-4s and body armor really has better stuff to do than steal some jewelry and some wallets, along with maybe a computer or some other electronics. Again, call me odd, but I somehow find it hard to wrap my head around the concept of using that kind of hardware for such an insignificant act.

This is the key. The extra power isn't of much use unless you can deliver fast, controlled, repeat shots. Absolutely never depend on just one hit. And, OP, correct me if I am wrong, but I get the sense from your prior posts and threads that you're trying to do just that.

You'd be suprised, here in pittsburgh we just had a shootout less than a quarter mile up the road from where I live between police and one guy with an ak-47 and a bulletproof vest. 3 officers responded to a call and he opened fire on them, one of them was killed instantly the other took a few shots and tried to take him out but the rounds where stopped by the vest and then the other officer was shot when he was coming up the stairs. a shootout that lasted for a few hours followed and it only stopped when an officer managed to shoot the guy in the leg. Criminals can get body armor just fine today.

If I worked at a convenience store, or a musician, and I could not pack a gun there I surely would have the bullet proof vest.

I see them new for less than the price of a used Glock.
