I have a dilema. I need to get rid of a handgun and I have it narrowed down to either my Beretta PX4 or my Springfield XDM 3.8. They both shoot great and the pro's and con's are pretty close.

The Beretta has a 4" rotating barrel hold 17 rounds and is hammer fired. The Springfield has a 3.8" barrel holds 19 rounds and is striker fired. The Beretta has the Italian style and the Springfield is more of a traditional look. I am confident shooting both of them and they are booth equally comfortable in ergos.

Does anyone have any insight?

I'd keep the XDm, as I hate Beretta's customer service. Springfield always stands behind their products. Both are good guns, but I like to know that I'm covered if something breaks.

Thanks for the prompt responses. The debate I am truly having is 19 rounds vs 17 rounds and striker vs hammer fired. Stupid hospital bill!:banghead: I wish I could keep them both. I might just take them both in and see what get offered and sell the one that will get me the highest profit.

If the PX4 is the full-size or even the compact-size, it almost makes more sense to me to sell that one. I base this on my preference for bigger guns in bigger calibers (.40, .357, .44, .45, 10mm) and smaller guns for smaller calibers (9mm, 9x18, .380, .32, .38 spl)

If they are both sub-compact, basically the same size, then I would keep the Beretta. Not only do I think the Beretta feels better in the hand and looks a LOT better, but the sub-compact XD will be in every store and on every website, whereas the sub-compact Beretta Storm is harder to find.

The 3.8 XDM (not XD) has the full size grip. The full size mag holds 19 rds. Add one in the chamber and you have 20 rounds of 9mm goodness ready to go!

Mec-Gar makes a mag for the XD that holds 18 rds of 9mm if you're interested. I got mine thru CDNN

My experience with the customer service of each:
Beretta Tomcat: Had it about a year and a half, maybe 2 years, has less than 200 rounds through it and I discovered the frame is broken right above the trigger pin. It's a known problem.
Beretta refused to fix it and referred me to some gun shop in Missouri that had no idea what I was talking about and told me to call Beretta.
It now sits in a box, a complete waste of money. I can't even sell it like that.
Springfield XD9: Picked it up used, looked pretty tough, some dunce tried to paint it and one mag was crap. It was failing to extract 2 or 3 rounds out of every mag, so I called Springfield to see about buying an extractor.
They told me to send it in. They were real nice, sent me a prepaid label, I sent it to them and had it back in less than a week with the new extractor and all cleaned up.
Didn't cost me a dime.
Based on customer service, I'd keep the XDM, not to mention, the Xds are a good solid gun.

Keep the PX4 - hammer fired, rotating lock, better ergonomics AND you can easily get FACTORY 20 round mags for it so the capacity difference goes out the window.

I think paintball made capacity an issue. When the round count hits double digits it's a fire fight and if what you brought is a handgun, better think more about exit strategy.

As for which to keep, keep the one you have the better holster for.

...Which 9mm would you keep?
I have a dilema...

I have been there myself but I always look for an alternative other than disposing of a 'desired' gun--just another shooter I could get rid of absent second-thoughts. Maybe you can find another way if it's something you don't want to unload.

Nevertheless, good luck with your decision!

-Cheers

If it's that 3.8 with the ridiculous full-length grip, ditch it I says.

I like a consistent trigger pull, but a compact sized slide on a full-length grip frame makes no sense to me. I think the PX4 is a little long in the grip for a 4" gun too, but that's just my love of Glock 19/FNP-9M/CZ PCR proportions talking.

Better ergonomics? Really?? The XDM has interchangeable backstraps, a better trigger pull, etc, etc.

The Beretta 20 rd factory mag also doubles as a mono-pod, it sticks out so far. Get some after market base pads for the XDM, the mags will be just as long as the Beretta, but hold 24 rds +1

I have seen a good many used XDM's and most gun shops carry the XD line. Every now and then i get emails from various venders about deals on XDM's.

I can count on one hand the number of times i have seen a PX4 in person and i have never seen them on sale.

All things being equal i would keep the PX4.

Check with the hospital to see if they will allow you to pay in installments. I have been in your shoes before and the hospital was very accomodating.

That way you might be able to keep both.

Ergonomics is eye of the beholder. BTW, the PX4 also has interchangeable backstraps. The XDM has the ergos of a Glock while the PX4 has curves that fit the plam. The 3.8" on the XDM also makes it off-balanced. I would leave the PX4 alone as far as extended mags are concerned. 17+1 is more than enough in a pistol. Yes, I have shot both. With all that said.....I think the Sigma has damn good ergos too. ;)

The XDM feels nothing like a Glock, which is a good thing. Many prefer the balance of this XDM "Commander," even tho it may not make sense on paper.

The PX4 "feels" good, but has a long trigger reach coupled with a long, hard trigger pull with long reset.

I'd keep the one I shot best.

You guys are amazing! 22 responses to my first post! My current plan is to take both to the range and shoot 50 rounds in each. Then I am going to take them both to the gun shop and see how much they will give me for each. This should clear up any questions I have.

You guys truly are great.
