Guys I am thinking about buying my first AR15. I want a 16" barrel and a flat top. I will have to put a scope or red dot on it. When you get old the eyes need help. My question is what do you think of the AR's at Palmetto Arms? Now don't go and tell me about the high dollar guns as that ain't going to happen. Don
 
Some PSA owners have had a few small issue; missaligned M4 ramps, soft metal safety selectors. I have bought 2 lowers, 3 lower kits, charging handle, bolt carrier group and much more from PSA without an issue. You can read about the issues by doing a search on AR15.com. It is a very small percentage of the high volume they sale.

Sometimes shipping and customer service can be slow, but they always take care of the customer.

I would go for it.
 
I don't have one from them but I have heard good things. I just saw a deal they were offering I think I saw it in the exchange section at ar15. They were offering a complete rifle with a 300 dollar aimpoint optic included for under a 1000 dollars.

If you are looking for a quality rifle at a decent price you might also consider looking into spikes tactical. I recently got a complete rifle from them and I couldn't be happier with it. You will see they have an excellent reputation and a lifetime guarantee. You can get a complete rifle for under 1000 dollars.
 
A $1000 AR is to much for me. I know they are coming down in price. That is the only reason I am considering getting one now. Another thing I will be putting another trigger in it. I can't stand a crappy trigger. Don

I think their $1000 does include a nice optic, not sure which one.

I have a lower build kit from PSA (with their standard trigger). Quality is excellent. I have it paired with a Spikes M4 LE upper. It's a sweet shooter - I couldn't be more pleased.

The standard PSA trigger is probably the best standard AR-15 trigger I've encountered. I wouldn't say it's particularly light (maybe 6-7 lbs. or so), but it's very smooth with a crisp release. You can tell their supplier (who apparently also supplies to the FN plant in Columbia, who has the government contract for M-16s) took their time with the small parts.
 
palmetto has a good reputation with their built it yourself guns. DPMS is a good low budget gun. the DPMS sportical is about $600 out the door with a 16" barrel telescoping stock and flat top. it seems to fit the ticket quite well. I agree there is just no need for a colt or armalite in most situations
 
I was looking very closely at the PSA upper + lower parts kit and their stripped lower for a build and in my researching I have found overwhelmingly positive responses. Anybody care to compare them to the S&W M&P Sport which is pretty comparably priced? Both fit the OP's bill of 16" barrel an flat top.

S&W (IMHO) is a better deal for the money. PSA are great folks, but they are at the mercy of their suppliers as they make nothing. S&W makes more of the rifle than PSA.

Note: I have no use for the FA or dust cover, so that may be a factor. Also, I know and like the PSA folks as they are local.

the reason is that PSA is a shooting supply store, not a major gun manufacturer. PSA guns are almost entirely FN Herstal parts and if I'm not mistaken it's FNH that is making all of the M4s and even a small number of the M16s for the armed forces nowadays. I'm funny that way though, I would rather have the milspec gun rather than the name brand gun. S&W has not been overly renowned for their work with rifles so the fact that they make their own does not impress me at all. this may sound overly critical but I am merely voicing my opinion and it's worth as much as you paid for it.
 
They were made by Colt prior to FN taking over production. Your ship probably has the old A2s made by Colt. Colt doesn't make the M16 anymore for the military, just the M4.
 
hmm, interesting, good to know, I guess that explains why the PSA 20" upper also has the FNH barrel
