Where to get powder and primers around Ft Hood, Tx?

Most gun shops carry reloading supplies as does some of the big box stores like Sportsmans Warehouse, Cabellas, etc. Just call and ask before making the trip if its out of your way.

check with Trainer -Hale Supply near San antonio.google them they have unusual hours but good prices they are located on a gun range.
you can call them ahead to make sure they have what you need. I bought powder and shot from them thru a friend. he deer hunts out in TX and drives near Trainer hale saved me the haz mat fee and got good prices.

if you don't use them try Powder valley for powder and primers, others are Grafs, mid south, natchez, midway usa, Recobs, Gamaliels, lots of internet suppliers for reloading stuff.

talk to the firearms guys at the military base they will know where to but this stuff.

Not sure about Ft. Hood area, but usually local gun shows are among the best place to buy primers and other supplies. Good prices and no Haz-Mat fees.

Can't answer your question, but that's a good choice in components. I've loaded almost 500 rounds of the MBC 147gr and it's always an accurate, low power and fun bullet to shoot. I mostly load them with HS-6, but did some with 231 a while ago and it was good too. 3.2-3.4 gr with a 1.135 OAL is what I used. MBC gives a good military discount too.

Powder Valley. Yes you pay dreaded Haz mat but if you order enough of powder or primer, it offsets the high prices around your area. Here in California, it is easier to use Powder Valley. Bullets only 2 I use are www.pennbullets.com the other as most reader know is Missouri Bullet company. Penn Bullets has no charge for military folks. I use that discount all the time. Their lead bullets are outstanding and seem not to lead or very very little. These things really help to keep costs down. Hunting I use Hornady XTP.

If you are going to buy bulk, these would be the last two places I would suggest.

Powder Valley is going to get you much better pricing. You'll still need to do HazMat with Cabela's and MidwayUSA's HazMat policy is ridiculous.

I highly suggest you find others that reload. I suspect you are very likely to find others and do a group buy to split shipping and HazMat costs.

Graf's runs a no haz-mat special from time to time. Buying in bulk is your firend with powder an primers, especially compared to gunshow and Cabela's pricing. You can also look for other reloaders in your area and split hazmats, I used to do that when I ordered small quantities.

Just a week ago, I got Powder Valley's "no Hazmat" offer with 5k Fed or CCI primers and you could add any powder they cary to the order, I got 8lbs of n320 and 5k Fed SPP with no hazmat, just shipping cost which is low and to-the-door shipping.. No tax, no gas to go get it.

I don't know when the offer expires---check fast, it's a good place to buy.

Buying in bulk will get you better prices, but only if you have something to do with all those components. I don't like to keep too much on hand because I have to move so often. 1 lb of powder will last you about 2k rounds, quite some time if you're not shooting frequently.

I don't see a lot of 9mm load data from the various books showing 231 listed for 147gr lead. Kinda peters out at 124-130 grain bullets. I'm sure it can be done, but it's probably not optimal to start.

Find a local gun shop, and compare their prices to Powder Valley or Graf's. If powder and primers aren't more than 10% over those on-line retailers, get 'em there. If they are, keep shopping.


Prices fluctuate, but just to give you a quick idea . . . at today's prices powder ought to run between $20-25 per pound. Primers $27-30 per thousand. Anything more than that is too much, so if you see higher prices, shop somewhere else.

Yes, Lee has data for almost everything, and it's in my Lee book, too.


But Lyman doesn't. If they don't list data for a 9mm using 231 with 147 grain lead, but have it for the lighter bullets, that's what I'd call a clue.


Like I said earlier - I'm sure it can be done, but it's probably not optimal to start off with.

It can be done, I've loaded and fired about 100 with 231. But now I stick with HS-6 for the 147s.
