Best .22lr under a $1000 for target shooting?

Hi guys looking to buy an accurate and reliable .22 for target shooting, mostly at 50 yards!

I have am looking at these rifles:
1) Savage MKII (accutrigger but I want to go lighter, can be achieved with a rifle basix)
2) CZ455 (apparently sometimes the bolt falls out, true?)
3) CZ453 (apparently not as well finished as the 455 but with a better trigger)
4) Ruger 77/22 (apparently with a crazy 80OZ trigger)
5) Remington 5
6) Marlin 980 (have marlin bolts, become as rough as levers since Remington bought them?)
7) Other?
 
I just got (as within the last week) a CZ 453 Varmint. I adjusted the set trigger down to maybe 8 oz. Haven't fired it yet, but the target from the factory is about 5/8".

I know a guy that used one on a regular basis to shoot in a monthly rimfire match. Won most weeks against considerably more expensive rifles.

The other option would be either a used 541 Remington or Model 52 Winchester. Most likely, these would be from the 50's or 60's. Those were true competition rifles.
 
I have an anschutz 1515-1516 in .22mag, that is the best rimfire bolt rifle I have ever shot. They are in your sub $1000 if you can come across one I would reccomend it.
 
I have three Ruger M77/22's that are very fine rifles, with the Target Grey/Laminated the very best off all....:)
My best shooting center-fire rifle is an old Rem.788 in 223....out shoots every other rifle I have ever seen. Has the open sights removed and a scope mounted on Control bases and rings. I'll never let it out of my hands. My 2 sons both want it when I'm done with it......there will probably be a fist fight at my funeral, over it....:D
 
An Anschutz will out shoot anything you have listed but the 1416 is a light weight sporter.For strictly targets and the best price take a look at a Kimber 82G but we're talking around 10-12 lbs so just targets.

A used 54 action Anschutz would be my first choice,either target or sporter weight,your choice.The 1416 Annie is a 64 action but in sporter weight.The 64 action also comes in a target weight gun which would be my first choice in a new gun right at $1000 if I was just shooting targets.
 
I can only judge on what I've fired....I've fired Marlin's and Remington's and one Anschutz (not mine), Sears brand, Henry's, and the Savage Mark II (which I now own)....I went with it due to price...accuracy and looks....I love the accutrigger and I love the stainless bull bbl. 200 yd shots are fairly easy, 100 yd is on the money and anything closer is overkill.
 
IF you can find a used cooper or Winchester 52d for that much, you win.

Anschutz will run circles around everything you have listed. There is a reason the olympic team used them for so long...

The kimber 82 is another very good suggestion.
Mossberg 144 lsb might keep up with that kimber, might not.
Then probably a cz followed very closely by a savage tr.
 
Thats real interesting to hear, a lot of people seem to think CZ are made much better than Savages (one guy said a 100 year gun!)

If a Savage can group as tight as a CZ then, I will get a Savage!

I am tempted buy the 455 and the fact Barrels can be changed for .22 mag and .17 HMR though!
 
For a grand you can buy one of those bialthaon type rifles.

That's a heck of a budget for a rimfire.
 
Unfortunately, here in Oz, we don't get that much for our money. The distributors here take a massive cut. Basically any rifle that you can buy in the states add between 50-100% depending on brand.

You won't get an Anschutz for under $1250!

the CZ start at $700 up
Marlins and Savage $300 and up
The remington is ~ $600-700
Ruger $900-1000

And to import a rifle from the States will cost $500, its only orth doing for 3 or more and they don't like it unless the rifle is not for sale in Australia, e.g. Savage FVT!
 
An Anschutz is the most accurate but considering cost ,you won't get a cheaper more accurate 22 than the Savage MKII.For just targets I would get a heavy barrel laminate stock.

I don't know your specific prices in Australia but also the Zastava Z5 can be a very accurate rifle but may require some trigger and bedding work to reach it's potential.
 
A used Anschutz 54, Winchester 52, Walther UIT, or Suhl 150 can often be found under 1K. If you get lucky you might find a Remington 40x or 37 under 1k.
 
Remington Model 5, it's a Russian made Zastava that I have been shooting for years as my main .22LR. That is literally a tack driver and extremely accurate with a great stock trigger. Plus it has a beautitul wood stock.

The remington is ~ $600-700

I got mine for $350 NIB and easily found for $400-$500 anywhere.
 
If you have a $1K budget, you can start by scratching all of those off of the list in the original post. All of those rifles are just plinkers.

In light of the stated budget, I'd be looking at some flavor of 64 action Anschutz in a new rifle. If you don't mind used, Anschutz 54 action or Remington 40X. In my experience, they both shoot about neck and neck, but if I had to give the edge to one, I'd have to give it to the 54 action, just because of the faster lock time.
 
Agreed on the 40x if you do not need a repeater.

You could also look into having something built off the quad. I drooled over more than a few of those...
 
at $1,000, Browning should have been on that list long before Savage or marlin were ever considered.

You have also overlooked base model Anschuts and Coopers that can be had new just under $1K - as well as lightly used Kimbers which are under that mark as well.

Basically, you gave yourself a high ceiling for price, and then populated your list with low end and mid range rifles. Do some research and find out what a rimfire can be.
