I bought my first handgun a few years back (mid 20s), and have since taken courses, got my permit, several more guns, and carry regularly. My mother has always been staunchly against me carrying a handgun, or even owning one. She has never seen the need, and thinks that they cause more harm than good. (I'm sure you've all encountered this type of person)

Well this week someone tried to come into her house in the middle of the night while her husband was away. Luckily, her alarm system scared off this particular intruder, but it certainly got her thinking.

Today she called me and let me know what she wants for Christmas: A handgun, and some lessons on how to use it.

Just thought I would share this story of an anti becoming a pro. It made my day.
 
That's usually all it takes; one firsthand experience that the world is not a safe place. Learning that monsters are real.

My aunt-in-law is in a similar boat - never owned a gun, never shot a gun, never wanted a gun in the house - but now that she lives alone and crime rates are going up, she's wanting lessons.

It's a great feeling! :)
 
This is how my mother was.

It's lucky that the alarm scared off the intruder or this wake-up call could have been a little late as I'm sure it has been with some...

If everyone would understand the concept of "preparing for the worst while praying for the best", violent crime in this country would go down fast.
 
Yes, I was very relieved that this intruder was dissuaded by the alarm, but not everyone would be. The scariest part is that her husband travels a lot for work, and drives a great big dodge truck, so it's always quite obvious when he isn't there, which makes her seem like an easy target. I'm glad she now realizes that danger and that unarmed, she has no way to stop someone from committing a crime against her.
 
hmmm.... all it took for me was having two daughters.... praise the Lord and pass the ammunition....

seriously though, I had a friend get carjacked in Huston with her baby in the car seat. They struggled and he ended up taking of with her purse. She was immediately interested in getting a CCW after that. I offered to give her my LCP, but I think she went with a larger caliber....
 
My 65 year old mother recently "saw the light" also, and picked up a GP100 357 to keep her company.
 
My second wife (the one I had my three beautiful children with) did not like guns. She was okay with me shooting and reloading but was uncomfortable having the kids exposed to shooting. I just patiently waited and honored her concerns.

My kids are now grown (20, 22 & 23) and are living in a rented house just a few miles away. Guess what? They all own guns (rifles, handguns, shotguns) and reloading and shooting is one of our top activities as a family (including my third wife who LOVES guns, reloading and shooting).

It's all good!

It's a shame it took this incident for her to change her opinion. It sounds like you're going to be the one that has the important job of training her when it comes to safe ownership and use. Good for you.

Bottom line... she's going to be able to protect herself!
 
Now just hope she doesn't back out. Mine finally asked for a gun, but when I took a bunch up there to figure out what would fit her best, and tired to teach her how to load and unload one, she changed her mind... at least I will be moving down the road pretty soon, so at the very least my GF who does know how, will be in the area if needed....

Yup. My mother and stepfather were pretty anti when I was growing up. Then one summer they were on a camping/trailriding (horseback) trip and had a scary encounter with some unsavory folks. When they got back, they requested some instruction and adopted one of my .357's. Later they decided that their lack of proficiency with the revolver made it a less than ideal choice, especially since their needs also include dispatching rattlers on the property, and asked me to get them into a shotgun. They now have a Maverick 20 ga. that I cut down to 18.5" cylinder bore.
 
My sister used to think a gun that was sitting on a table could somehow "go off" and kill people. She was very against having any firearm in her house. Then one night during a dinner with another couple one of the guests went into the living room and a man (complete stranger homeless guy) was sleeping on their couch. That did it.
She was at my house learning to shoot within a month.
