I saw this topic over at The Firing Line, so I thought I might bring it to THR. What are the top 10 firearms, in your opinion, that every gun owner should have in their collection? Try to be realistic and make sure they are obtainable relatively easily.(No NFA please). So here's mine:

1. Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60
2. Ruger Mk. Series or Browning Buckmark
3. Glock 19
4. Colt Python or S&W 686
5. AR15/M4
6. AK47/74
7. Quality 1911- Kimber, Colt, Baer, Wilson, Springfield, etc.
8. Remington 700 in your caliber of choice
9. Remington 870 28" BBL 12 ga. Edit: Thanks Elkins, I completely forgot about shotguns. Doh!
10. Win 94 or Marlin 336 Edit: Still need the 30-30

1. Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60 agree
2. Ruger Mk. Series or Browning Buckmark or High Standard
3. Glock 19 just say any Glock
4. Colt Python or S&W 686 not at all the same thing- Mercedes vs Toyota- say S&W K or L frame revolver instead
5. AR15/M4 maybe, but an M1A or Garand would also work here
6. AK47/74 A J frame S&W would be more useful under normal circumstance
7. Quality 1911- Kimber, Colt, Baer, Wilson, Springfield, etc. OK
8. Remington 700 in your caliber of choice- the Rifleman's rifle (Pre-64 Winchester 70) is more of a classic
9. 30-30- Winchester 94, Marlin 336 -let's substitute a Remington 870 shotgun here, since your list is shotgun free
10. Mosin Nagant Variant -don't own one, doubt I ever will- the Mauser 98 is much more of a classic military bolt gun

  1. A quality semi-auto rimfire pistol.
  2. A quality bolt action or semi-auto rimfire rifle.
  3. A quality centerfire double-stack striker-fired handgun.
  4. A quality semi-auto striker-fired carry pistol.
  5. A quality-built AR-15 pattern rifle in .223.
  6. A quality pump-action or semi-auto shotgun.
  7. A well-made bolt-action hunting rifle that is chambered for a .30 cartridge of some sort.

Did it in seven. Make sure to have plenty of magazines, as well as slings, mag carriers, and holsters.

I am agnostic as to brand or model, so long as the gun works well for the role it is intended to fill.

I'm surprised there are no shotguns on that list.

I'd have to add to that...

#8 - Quality big bore (.35+) wheelgun
#9 - Quality small "pocket" snubnose (S&W J frame or small frame Colt)
#10- a quality .30+ semi-auto, magazine fed rifle

I agree with the original list minus #10... should be replaced with a shotgun, probably rem 870

Good list. Here are the ten I think are worthy of owning.

Mauser K98 or Springfield 1903
M1 Garand
Remington 870/Mossberg 500
Colt 1911
Smith & Wesson Model 27-2
Ruger 10/22
Colt Python
Glock (any full size model)
Smith & Wesson K frame .22
.17 bolt action rifle

10/22
Remington 700
Ruger MKII
1911
Remington 870
M1 Garand
AR15/ M4
S&W revolver (any frame)
Ruger Single Six
Glock 19 or 22

I think ten guns is way too many as "must" haves.

Since it was touted as a collection, I think it depends entirely on what you want to collect. I have a friend that has >100 Lugers. I doubt he has ten other guns in total.

1. 1911
2. K98 Mauser
3. Ak47
4 Colt SAA
5. M1 Garand
6.Sig
7 Smith and Wesson .357
8. AR( 15 or 10)
9. Ruger 10/22
10. Something in 10mm

Well aren't you Mr. Logical :D

Top 10 "Oughta-Own"

1. Ruger 10/22
2. Browning Buck Mark or any .22 pistol
3. Any reliable full size 9mm pistol
4. Any .357 magnum revolver
5. AR15/M4
6. AK47/74
7. Quality 1911- Kimber, Colt, Baer, Wilson, Springfield, etc.
8. Remington 700 in your caliber of choice (.308!)
9. Any pump 12-ga. (Mossberg 500!
10. Snub nose or subcompact semi-auto for carrying when you can't carry
11. At least one milsurp even if it is a Mosin Nagant. Just for fun!

Darn, couldn't quite make it in 11. Overall our lists were pretty close! Still not sure if an AR ... AND ... and AK need to be on the list.

I think I can do it in 5
1&2 A .22 rimfire rifle and pistol
3&4 A centerfire rifle and pistol
5 A shotgun
Yup I did it in 5! ;)

I'd put a .22 handgun in there for sure. And doing it in 10 is just fine with me. I couldn't trim it any further.

1. Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 60 - Have the 10/22, prefer my Henry
2. Ruger Mk. Series or Browning Buckmark - Happy with my Sig Mosquito
3. Glock 19 - Won't own a Glock. SIG P2022, FN-Herstal FNP-9 or Beretta PX4 Storm F
4. Colt Python or S&W 686 - Make that a Python or S&W M27
5. AR15/M4 - Agreed
6. AK47/74 - Had a Valmet years ago; not my cup of tea.
7. Quality 1911- Kimber, Colt, Baer, Wilson, Springfield, etc. - Maybe the Colt; I don't consider the M1911 a "must-have." If I am going to get a high-buck pistol, I'd rather have a SIG P226 in .357 SIG.
8. Remington 700 in your caliber of choice - Don't hunt; don't need.
9. Remington 870 28" BBL 12 ga. - Prefer 18 to 20-inch barrel
10. Win 94 or Marlin 336 Edit: Still need the 30-30 - Like the Henry

Add small snub-nose, .38 Special, Colt, S&W J-Frame, Ruger.

I don't think there is any top ten list every gun owner should own. There is a different list for each gun owner. I collect because i enjoy it. Start throwing "supposed to's" in there and the fun starts to wane. But my personal top ten list is:

1. AK74 (Russian is best)
2. Colt AR15 M4
3. HK P2000sk
4. SW MP 4" .40
5. Ruger LC9
6. MSAR 5.56 (although AUG A3 may be replacing)
7. 20" SPR AR Upper
8. Saiga 12 (converted)
9. Ruger 22/45
10. FN SCAR 5.56

Colt 1911 .45 ACP
Browning Hi Power 9MM
Ruger MK series .22LR
P-08 Luger
CZ-75 variant

Rifle with a Mauser action (K98k, M70, etc)
Ruger 10/22 .22LR
Russian SKS
AR-15
M1 Garand

I want to be able to play as many games as I can. I have guns to shoot so here goes.
I want a 22 pistol for target shootin and a 45 for IPSC,IDPA and general target duty. I want a CAS battery. I want a hunting/target sport shotgun and a 22lr and a CF rifles and I'll need a pocket gun for carry.
My List
Smith 41
Les Baer Concept III
Ruger Sheriff's Vaquero 44 special
Lipsey Ruger flat top Blackhawk 44 special
'92 Winchester (or copy) in 44 mag
1897 Winchester (or copy)
Benelli Montefeltro
Garand
ruger 10/22
Smith 442

What are the top 10 firearms, in your opinion, that every gun owner should have in their collection?
Certainly a highly subjective question, but I'll give it a shot. I went a bit more generic, as I think in most cases there are more than one reasonable choice for each catagory. Here's what I would consider a fairly well balanced "Ten Gun" collection:
  1. Rimfire rifle (semiauto or bolt)
  2. Rimfire handgun (semiauto or revolver)
  3. Polymer Semiauto (9mm, Glock would be the original choice, but these days there are any number of others)
  4. 1911-style Semiauto (.45 ACP, what can I say?)
  5. SA Revolver (.45 LC, another classic)
  6. Centerfire Magnum Revolver (.357 or .44)
  7. Assault Rifle/Carbine (5.56×45mm or 7.62×39mm, I don't really see the need for both)
  8. Centerfire "Deer" Rifle (my choice woutl be .270 or .30-06 but anything from 25.06 though .300 magnum would work)
  9. Lever Action Rifle (.30-30 WCF, there are other good selections but the "thuty-thuty" is the classic lever action cartridge)
  10. Pump Action Shotgun (12 guage with changes in choke and/or barrel it will do anything a shotgun will do)

ill play...

1. Any reliable .22 rifle
2. A reliable .22 handgun
3. A small reliable summer carry gun in 9mm or larger
4. A reliable 45 acp winter carry gun.
5. A .380 mouse gun (for when you cant carry a gun)
6. A bolt action rifle in .243 or larger.
7. A 12 g repeating shotgun
8. A muzzleloading rifle
9. A nice .357 revolver
10. A fun gun... be it a AR or AK or Garand... you get the picture

I can't be company specific. If I was, I would be able to come back here in 6 months and change 6 of the 10 atleast. My mind changes like the wind when it comes to favorite manufacturers.
