What have YOU used for hogs?

true they don't have plating but cut the dude some slack in your line.a 325 gr. round doesn't look to under gunned, and bad juju happens everywhere, you don't have to get out in the boonies for that.uhoh!!! i think i hear banjo music,no my mistake and what caliber is that ?.45/70,.44?didn't those guide guns come in .30/30 too

danite, I do believe I was quite clear when I stated "Just make sure you are using something with enough ass to penetrate, as you have shown here with your experience, and all will end well."

Just ask TexasPatriot.308 if he will go after a hog in the BRUSH with an anemic cartridge. Man has been chased up more trees than you can count! He will sit back at distance with a .17hmr and killum all day but he wouldn't go in the brush without something more appropriate you can bet on that! Appropriate bullet construction and placement of the shot is key to any kind of hunting but even more so on large boar hogs because of that shield.

People who use a .45-70 want to be certain that they have something large enough for whatever they might possibly encounter on this continent. Is it overkill on some game? Perhaps, but considering the size of some of those tusks and the fact that they can run faster than we can, there's no such thing as them being "too dead" in my humble opinion. I just try to ensure that there is something that will stop the bullet after it goes through whatever I'm shooting at. If I saw a hog at the top of a ridge line and I was below it, I would not shoot up at the hog since that bullet has to land *somewhere* after it goes through the hog. We had a recent incident where two kids got shot at outdoor basketball practice. Currently, they think that it was from hunters who either doing some target practice on their deer lease or from another hunter (poacher) who was also on that property at that time.

Apparently, it wasn't the first time that some bullets landed on the school property...

SKS 7.62X39mm Wolf (Black Box) 154gr. SP.
Mosin Nagant 1891/30 7.62X54Rmm PPU 150gr. SP BT. (Kind of overkill though IMO.)
Marlin 336 .30-30 Win. 170gr. Winchester Power-Point. :)

Only pig i shot was with my .243, right behind my catchment tank at the last house we lived at. Most pig hunting is done with a knife here, rarely will we use guns for fear of hitting dogs.

I dont think I ever said I would go in brush with an anemic cartridge ( I guess you were referring to the .17hmr) I always have at least a .44 mag or .45 colt on my hip with hot loads, I kill more hogs in a week than most people will kill in a year. I checked cattle tonight and saw well over 60 big pigs, didnt shoot one cause the closest was over 300 yards away. down here aint like Illinois, we have tracts in thousand of acres some sections (460 acres) land is common. something we know down here in Texas is our guns and how to use em best.

More than a dozen taken over 10 years of hunting. I have used a .270, and a 7mm Remington magnum. I am currently building a 6.8 SPC AR-15 that I will mount a Pulsar N550. I have also been looking into the mini 30 from Ruger as a good pig gun. Hog in my area have become more present in the last five years so I am stepping up to an auto loader over the old bolt gun. I need to bust as many as I can with the opportunitys I have.

Why is it that people assume because I live in Illinois presently that I have not hunted anywhere else? TexasPatriot, I have hunted hogs in Texas many many many MANY times. As well as most all the other southern states. If you read what I posted earlier, I was stating that you of all people KNOW not to chase after hogs with anemic cartridges in the brush areas because you know full well what the bad end of a hog is like.

By the way TexasPatriot, as soon as I get my knees worked on, we are still on for some hog killing! I'll be bringing the new toy down as well as that Ruger #1 450NE you wanted to play with :D so get your shoulder sling ready!

We've killed and trapped and killed over 200 past 5 weeks. Using .243, .222 rem, the kitchen sink.... Lol

Actually, you probably fumble fingered that... It's 640 acres to a section, not 460... :)

I drove from Houston to Acuna, Mexico (across from Del Rio, TX) and back over the last days and basically drove right by your area... Although there is a whole lot of empty out there, it doesn't compare to the amount of empty to be found between San Antonio and Del Rio...

i know this is a little off topic...

im going hog/deer huntin tomorrow (whichever we see) and can use either a .222 rem or a .243. both are bolt, 5 shot magazines. i have shot the .222 a lot, and am very familiar with it, but have never used the .243. the .243 has a much nicer scope on it... which do yall think i should use? im leanin towards the .222, as a neck shot (which i'm quite capable of!) should either drt, (it will hit either backbone, juggular, or windpipe) or miss completely and not leave me trackin a wounded deer through the mesquite...

oh, and NFG, i've never had one, but i've heard the Mini 30 can have reliability issues. if u keep a sidearm, id say go for it if u want to. if u only use a rifle, like me, i would trust myself to it. i usually get within 10 or 15 yards before firing, so i can get two or three more while they are running, sometimes towards me so i rarely use anything thats not a bolt, because you CANT screw them up!

Freedom fighter, sorry for jumpin so quick and not reading, I know that you knw what you are doing. these last few days of te year, will be hunting near home and at my deer lease. just great to be alive, to be in the outdoors, to experience things some people will never know. life is good.

I saw one hanging out in my yard one fine day, and went in to grab my camera because I knew nothing of the legalities involved. Turns out, here in Bama, so long as it's on private property (with permission) it's year 'round.
Dang. I coulda just shot the oinker. Oh well. I have the photo in a stack. If I get it scanned in soon I'll post it. In the meantime, my Super Blackhawk will be my weapon of choice if I see another one on the property.

Yeah, I'm missing ALL my hunting this year. Damn knees are totally blown. Just carrying the trash out is a feat to itself. Still getting to the range as often as I can but I'm only practicing seated at the bench or prone. Standing and kneeling are OUT for now. Just waiting on my ortho to get up to speed on those new replacement knees that are out. New procedure for someone with my stature (BIG) that is somehow better and longer lasting. My uncommonly large bone structure coupled with my height and weight would wear the ones out now in less than 5 years. Wouldn't want to go through this crap again that quick. We'll get together mid spring before it gets to hot for our fat rears and whomp some hogs.

Look on the bright side... That gives you an excuse to buy yourself an ATV...

Considering the place where I've been hunting lately, I would really not like find myself dragging out a hog of any size on foot... My knees are crap and I have to walk with a cane quite often... I can't get my truck back in some of the places where I've been hunting, so if I do get one, I guess I'm going to be headed home to get my ATV... Either that or butcher it on the spot so that I don't have to carry as much weight at one time...

LOL to hell with dragging. Thats what I got KIDS for! :D :D I have an ATV but I doubt I'll haul it down to Texas. Then again, if I get to put together what I want to and really get some hog hunting every other month for the "Hunters Feeding The Hungry" program, my ATV with a good trailer behind it will be needed.

I can remember in my younger days throwing a field dressed white tail deer across my shoulders and walking out of woods with it... No ATVs back then... If you could not get a Jeep that far back into the woods, your only choice was either on foot or with a horse... I'm just glad I didn't have only those options and the possibility of large game animals like elk or moose... I have an ATV that I keep at my hangar for moving my plane in and out of it... I'll go get it if I can't get my truck far enough into the brush to get the hog... Of course, right now, all I'm doing is seeing evidence of hogs, not the actual hogs... They sure are destroying the land around there...

I've killed them with everything from a recurve bow

2woc1a8.jpg

To a Finnish M-28 Mosin Nagant built on a 1914 reciever.

I have also killed them with a Compound bow, a 22 magnum, a 243, a 7mm-08, a 30-06, a 7mm mag, and a 50 caliber muzzleloader. Have no idea how many. Not enough. We are still eat up with them.

going after work today to check cows, gonna take my AR10A2 and my M1A hoping to find them in a group under a feeder. love my .308s in semi auto for this. it is dang cold down here today, should be good.

I killed a 175 lb boar with a 70 lb recurve , wood arrow and 2 blade broad head.

Killed another about 150 lbs with a 52 lb recurve , carbon arrow and 2 blade broadhead.

150 # sow with a 120 grain out of a 25-06 and another with a 270. A couple of smaller, maybe 80-100 lbs with a 22 Hornet.

You had a broadhead, so that doesn't count under the category of "wooden stake through the heart"... Nice try though... :)

TexasPatriot.308, you said a section of land in Texas was 460 acres, did you mean 640 acres? That is what it is up there in Illinois.
