Fixed or folder. Tax money will be here in Feb, and I want to enjoy a little of the return before the rest is ripped off me.

Recommend the best with consideration for steel quality, ease of sharpening, no liner locks if folding, and something that I don't already have! :)

For fixed, I've always drooled over a Esee 4, folding I'm stumped. I was hoping a Manix in Carpenter steel, but they appear out of my range.
 
Too filet? That is almost a 1/4" thick! I have the boot knife for the same price as it is flat ground and about the same size, which is REAL handy for any heavy duty task. Looks like you are hankering on a pop out folder tho....:rolleyes:
 
Actually Gordon, if you have a link to the flat ground one please send it. I'd love to see. I really don't need either folder or fixed, but had my heart set on the Esee, until others crept in the picture.......
 
Invest in a seminar and put some "tools" in your head instead of something in your hand.
 
Sn's edged weapons overview class rocks. So does the DVD reverse edge methods 2.

EWO covers the 3 main grip positions while the DVD covers fgeu and pikal only. But....the DVD covers a lot of stuff that you wont get from anything offered by anyone besides SN, such as the Managing Unknown Contacts module.

Class > DVD but if you can practice the DVD stuff with partners you'd be way ahead of many people.

Get the DVD and a trainer knife!
 
I got my 154CM Manix 2 from ebay for $50. Para2's for under $100, Gayle Bradleys and Lum Chinese folders too if you're lucky. (The last two are liner locks, but worth a look)

IMHO you should buy a Manix2 in 154CM. Get a krein regrind if you really need the FFG. BD30P is a little nicer but expect to pay extra since it was a sprint. XHP is much better, but the XHP Manix prices online are absurd.

Good training is always a great idea. Bad training may be worse than no training.

My experience of the Translucent Manix 2 was GREAT. It is literally my favorite Spyderco ever. Resharpening was easy, yet it took a great edge and held it as well (IMO) as VG-10. It's strong. It's lightweight. It's grippy enough without being destructive to pants or skin.

John Greco does good work. Some years ago, I traded a handgun for some of his knives.

Ontario has several (Gen 2) knives that are 5160 and very well priced, if you look around.

If you wait a while, Sam can make you a small fixed blade later in the year.

Thanks for all the replies. About the training, I would be interested, if not for the Manix 2 XL that I'm pretty set on. John, I was going for the translucient blue, until I saw the s30v ffg masterpiece! :)

As to the training, I had no idea Janich was the guy I was always seeing on Best Defense.
 
Just be aware that there are diminishing returns as a knife passes a certain size. Slower to open, harder to carry, heavier, more likely to draw undue attention...not saying, don't get the XL, just saying, think it through carefully.

under a 100 bucks (70ish) includes 2 knives that cover all the bases, at least most the bases. The kabar potbelly has been on my list of wants for a while.
The main knife is 1/4 inch thick hollow ground beast. Also tte jimping on the "piggy back" knife looks to be very well thought out.

The Zero Tolerance 0350 is in that price range also. It is a liner lock but it's a very thick and secure liner that I have zero worries about it closing on my fingers. I've never heard of it happening to anybody yet in fact. :) It's $120 or so on most sites but you can find them cheaper if you look around. Ok, ordered the xl. I really couldn't say no, I like big blades.

John, I agree with the philosophy of diminished returns, but everything I'm seeing on this one screams amazing. I'll let you know, as they shipped today.

This should be a thread. I honestly only shy away from them as I've been told by many here and on other forums that they are weaker than other locks.
