The white house cannot unilaterally remove the restrictions on SBR/SBS. It's codified in federal law. Contact your congressman and ask him to propose legislation changing the National Firearms Act.

This President is just as likely to ask them to change the law to require all machine guns and other NFA devices be forfeited. Is this really the administration you want to push this under? Even if it passed Congress it would almost assuredly be vetoed.

The real question is whether any administration, Democrat, Republican, or vegetarian, would push removal of the restrictions. Perhaps modifying them to allow ownership of the 14-inch-barreled shotguns used by law enforcement would politically possible (it could be presented as allowing LEOs to own them as personal weapons).

Right now, the President is in a position where he doesn't want to alienate any more voters than he already has. While neither party wants to admit it, Congress is in the same boat: their approval ratings are even lower than Obama's.

We all know Obama is not pro-gun and Eric Holder has gone off the deep end in his efforts. However, Obama is still a very bright politician and knows that gun control issues are losers for him. He needs what political capital he still has for more pressing business.

Even if it was passed or removed on the Federal Level, you would still have to have States remove it from State Law.

Wait until we get a better president.

Not to rain on the parade, but given the responses to the last few successful petitions I would not expect much beyond a brush off or posting of scientific inaccuracies to support the status quo.

It's easy, just find a gun friendly congressman to sponsor the legislation. Better idea yet, have him sponsor a bill eliminating the GCA 1968. Surely lots of pro-gunners in congress are willing to do that.

Sounds pretty familiar. There are too many taxes and too many government restrictions in our lives already...we need to get rid of as many as we can.

That really isn't a comparable example, given that the primary objection was taxation without representation. The states did have representation when the NFA tax was instituted. That's misguided rhetoric.

Yeah, but the way this thing works is that if he doesn't like it, nothing happens. There were a lot of petitions that got a LOT of signatures that he didn't address. The whole thing was a sham, just a stunt to make you THINK you were getting grievances addressed. Would have been pretty cool had he manned up to it and gave the people what they wanted whether or not it conflicted with his or his party's ideals.

It is essentially what congress is supposed to do, but those sellouts don't really work for us anymore. I can't forsee it getting overturned in my lifetime short of a big change in DC. It'd be nice though. The $200 fee isn't really the issue, the highly inflated prices are.

No, since there is no mechanism for the petition to acquire legal weight. These petitions are just a tool to dissipate political dissatisfaction.

The best case scenario is this:

If a petition gets enough support, White House staff will review it, ensure it’s sent to the appropriate policy experts, and issue an official response.

No, petitions are stupid and online petitions even more so.

IIRC, the President sneered at the "little people out there clinging to their guns and their religion." He, like many "progressives" claiming to be populist, has an abiding hatred of what he considers low class scum and he is much more likely to support a ban on both guns and religion (other than Islam) than to relax any current restrictions.
