Slinging up a Marlin Lever Action

Hi,

So my Marlin 336 Texan doesn't have sling studs, and I don't really want to use one of those mag tube clamp mounts. I was wondering if I could use this Blue Force Gear Universal Wire Loop to wrap around mag tube and barrel or barrel/forestock to give the mount more strength if I were to use the sling to assist in shooting. Any of you familiar with this loop, could you attest to whether it is grippy or does it slide around? Furthermore, I'm torn whether I should drill the rear stock or put a buttstock adaptor on too.

Just install the barrel band that has the stud on it.

i personaly would go with the barrel clamp, adding something else that puts pressure on the barrel could easly throw your poi, or accuracy. good luck.

With the barrel clamp do you just screw a stud in the stock to attach the sling to?

The mag tube clamp will will work better. Its easy to do. Lasts forever. Looks better, etc. I usually remove the slings from my rifle when actually hunting as it snags on the brush. This kit makes for easy removal http://www.midwayusa.com/product/51...bes-630-675-diameter-410-bore-shotgun-1-black

As mentioned, Levergun Leatherworks has some good stuff. One setup is a buttcuff with sling attached. The other end of the sling loop around the barrel/mag tube. Look down towards the bottom of this page to see what it looks like.

I agree with Badlander: Do not put the buttstock sling stud in the bullseye. Please.

The Marlin "bullseye" insert is their way of signifying a stock is walnut and not generic hardwood.

It is too far from the toe of the stock for positioning a sling swivel.

Why not just have a smith install a couple of sling studs? That way you could switch to just about any sling you want if you so desire.

You mean that little dot on the bottom edge on the stock? Always wondered why the sling point was positioned further back on my 336 and not mounted directly in the dot.

Whew. Glad I read this before I installed mine. Just picked one up today and was thinking "this must be where the stud goes". Lol

I guess I'll just go with the mag tube clamp setup. Will drilling the stucks hurt gun's value?

I have never heard this before and I've owned Marlins for 30 years.

Wont hurt the value at all if its done correctly. The drill line needs to be straight. If its off center that will detract from the value. Take it to a smith or even a good gun shop that has the right tools to do it correctly if your not comfortable with it. You will need a good strong vice mounted on a solid bench and the vice needs to be padded so as not to mar the wood stock. Most good shops have the tools needed and they have probably done hundreds of installs.

What's the opinion on using the 336 without a sling? It's light and carries in the hand nicely at the receiver.

just get the butt stock cover and the sling loop end to go over the barrel...looks classy and is not "invasive"...actually is very comfortable to shoot with

I guess it depends on the terrain and type of hunting you do. Its nice to have both hands free sometimes, like when dragging out a deer or pulling yourself up a steep hill, or when your just plain exhausted after a long day

Nothing wrong with it, but I've found that oft times things require two hands. Kinda hard with a rifle in one.
