Welcome to the Rimfire Match for the month of February! This match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 50yds.

*Note that the distance is back to our typical range of 25/50.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Unlimited/Target Rifles (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, sub-.20cal. chamberings, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles chambered for any rimfire cartridge .20cal./5mm and larger)

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both classes (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image in the link below. Scale to 100% on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire one shot at each soft drink (commonly referred to as soda or pop by ya'll Yanks) containment device. Growing up in NC, the chosen brand was a natural choice (they'd run me out of the state for choosing anything other than Cheerwine, Sundrop, or perhaps Royal Crown). Scored as one point for busting each can/bottle (cutting the edge), and two for a shot lying completely within the oval label for a total possible score of 30pts. BTW, you might want to work your way from the top down to prevent toppling the pyramid. ;)

50 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

If you enjoyed this match and want a bit more challenge, or just compare your rimfires to their big brothers, check out the concurrent Centerfire Match using a similar target at double the range.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. We'll give you an extra day (leap/election year) and make all submissions due by 23:59 February 29th this time around. ;)

I figured that I would make it a bit easier after last month's somewhat challenging target. In the process I think I might have made it just about impossible to miss. :uhoh:

:D Funny man. :D

Gonna give 'er a try with my Henry lever .22 and Rossi pump .22. I may even dig out the .30-30 ammo and try it with my Glenfield Marlin for the center fire match. Oh, and this may be fun to try with my very old classic Stevens Crackshot 26! ! ! ! :D

I'll likely try it for giggles freestanding but I don't hold much hope of doing much. Likely this'll be a good time to make up a nice set of crossed shooting sticks that click together to form a workable walking staff.

I don't know how well it would work for a walking stick, but I have been using 4 tent poles shock-corded together (two for each side) and that seems to make a good, compact, lightweight, inexpensive (free if you're like me have old poles lying around) rest. Nothing special, but passable for any instance that I've come across for hunting.

:)

You couldn't have done much worse than myself, a 13/35...anyway this one should be far less challenging. I expect to see several aced targets this time around.

:)

That target is deceivingly hard. All that red tends to blur together, and it is difficult to find a place to aim "at".

I don't think I scored well enough to bother scanning my targets. I need to do something about the trigger on my Marlin 25N.

I'm glad you all got me out to shoot today, though. I got two rifles sighted in and burned about 500 rounds. What a blast.

Figured that might be a problem with irons, but I wanted to have a good many targets to make it a mite bit more difficult. If you'd like, feel free to add a black "X" or circle to better differentiate the individual targets.

:)

I might have to do that if we get another nice day tomorrow. I can't believe the weather we're having here. I dressed up the sear on my Marlin just a bit with a fine stone and it made a BIG difference. It had some really nasty burs on it.

I find it best to open in Microsoft Office Picture Manager go to print, select Full Page Photo and deselect Fit Picture to Frame. I'll convert it to a .PDF later this afternoon to make printing a bit easier.

:)

It should work if you print it as a "landscape" (sideways) instead of a "portrait".

I tried again today, and still couldn't beat a 13 @25yds w/ a tech-sighted 10/22, prone w/sling. I used little white adhesive dots (the kind you use for your garage sale) over the ovals on the labels, but I still had a hard time differentiating between the individual targets.

I shot the same score at 50 in the same position with my scoped Marlin. That was mostly by accident, though. That Marlin is shooting around 4" @ 50yds. I need to try it with irons and/or different ammo to see if I can smoke out the problem.

I'll hang onto my targets, but I expect we will see much better than 13's, so I won't bother scanning them.

PDF Available:

Sounds good, but just in case others have a similar problem and haven't the software to make it work, I attached a .pdf of the target.

:)

Lots of nice dead calm winter days around here for the next couple of months. Back just before Christmas I got out for some black powder fun at my local range on one of the nicer sunny and above freezing days. The air was so calm that I finished the 6 rounds and had time to look at the cloud of fog I'd created and then dig out and fire up the camera to get a shot of the "fog of war". What you see below is what it was like a good minute after my last shot by the time I got the camera started and took this picture.

My problem isn't the wind. It's the "old guy" 58 year old eyeballs trying to see the paper. Let alone the labels on the bottles and cans.... :D

BCRider, it looks as if you started a forest fire. You must have had the ole smoke pole going at a pretty fair clip.

:)

Printed in grayscale since the printer I was using was b&w, so I used a highlighter on the label of each bottle and can to make them stand out a bit.

First up, I had a 4x BSA scope I wasn't using, so I found some rings and mounted it on a little Marlin 915Y single shot my kids have because they've been wanting a scope. It needed zeroing, naturally, so, since I had it out at the range, I gave this target a try from the bench at 50 yards. The target caught all the bullets, but the shooter missed a couple of the beverage containers. This is either an 11 or a 12, depending on if we are counting best hit on the can that caught three (?!) or worst hit.

Then, I decided to try my 10/22 on it. Also 50 yards, scoped, from the bench, since I was checking zeroes today. This is a 19. The bottom left can did get creased. Real can would've gone flying, so it counts according to how I understand the rules.

My new rifle didn't get here yet, so that's all for now. I know some of you guys can totally smoke both of these targets, so let's see'em!!

Thanks for getting us started, sixgunner455! Barring a convincing argument to the contrary, I think counting the higher score (in the case of your first target) is perfectly acceptable. As far as the second one, all the bottom cans show pretty clear hits from what I can see.

:)

I'd participate, but I just can't bear the thought of desecrating Cheerwine.. Can I get a Pepsi target or something??

They're empty...I drank the Cheerwine and added colored water figuring that nobody would notice. ;)

Phew! I was crestfallen thinking I couldn't participate.
That original post was really just a way of subscribing so I wouldn't lose this thread before I had a chance to print out my target, lol. Us North Carolinians do love our Cheerwine though :D
