.357 Rem Maximum Rifle

I have the parts lying around. I could thread a barrel, cut the chamber, and handload a 357 max rifle in a hour or two and be shooting it.

I would use a .380" straight fluted reamer for the body and fake the throating.

The 357 Maximum is a great step up from the 357 magnum, and will easily add 300+fps in a rechambered rifle. I have a 10" T.Contender in 357 Maximum and use 180gr Hornady Single Shot Pistol spire points in it. It's a fairly flat shooting round, and a bit more manageable in a handgun than a 44 Magnum. My T. Contender is sighted for around 125yds, using a Phantom 2.5x scope, and I have killed deer with it.

VA 27,which Marlin is too short? The 336 would work fine,as far as length goes.Would need some bolt face work along with feed mechanism alteration and rebarreling.Maybe a pump action rifle would be easier to modify for the longer round.Didn't IMI make a pump action .357 rifle some years back?

I have been looking at some 357 rem max brass to try a wildcat I have in mind...
With a case length of 1.605 inch, compared to 1.29 inch for a regular 357 mag, the Rem max is too long for a Win 92 clone. But as mentioned the 94 could be made to work.

The 357 Max can push a 180 grain bullet at 1,900- 2,100 fps from a 14 inch and 18 inch contender.

Y'all realize the .357 Max works at 10.000 PSI higher than the .357 dontcha? The muzzle blast out of my 10" contender is about twice that of a full .357 round and my older Contender frame opens pretty stiffly with the factory .357 max loads. I also have a Savage 24V in .357 Max over 20 ga. that I have chronographed the speer 180 bullet .357Max handloads at 2000 fps + out of it's 24" barrel. Yup almost a .35 Remington ! A .35 Remington operating at 43,000 psi will push the same 180 grain bullet to 2300 FPS out of a 22" Marlin barrel BTW. Just to tell you the differences.

H&R did make some .357Maximum barrels. They did so about the time they went into Recievership when filing for bankruptecy in the '80's. Most of the barrels were never assembled to actions. They were bought up by Numrich Arms (predecessor to GunParts Corp.), and sold off as "parts".

A friend of mine bought one and put it on a "Shotgun" action to make a "kit-gun". It shot very, very well. I still have some of his .357max brass lying around somewhere, even primed.... He passed away in 1998 and I don't know what happened to the gun.

We even shot a good bit of .357mag through it, though he prefered to use just my reloaded .38spl SWC's. He even shot some squirrels with it and reported it was the best "squirrel" rifle he'd ever used. He did have a trigger job done on the action by Walker Arms of Selma, Alabama. It was a neat rifle..... N.E.Arms would do well to make a run of .357max guns.
Like other posters have noted, the .357max approaches the performance of the .35Rem, though be it at much higher working pressures... But, these aren't a problem for the N.E.Arms recievers for c.f. rifle cartridges..... If it'll hold a .22-250, it'll hold a .357max...

.35 Remington isn't legal for use on deer in Indiana, .357 Maximum is, that is why it is popular in rifles.

That's the darnedest law I ever heard of.

Apparently no normal length rifle caliber is legal, including the 30-30, .308, and .35 Rem.

From Indiana F&G regs:
Rifles with cartridges that fire a bullet of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a
minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches
are legal to use only during the deer firearm season.
Some cartridges legal for deer hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40
Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44 Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester,
.45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475 Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express,
and .500 S&W.

Yup, the 1894 Marlin action in. 357 mag is too short. No way to mod it to work. The 336 would work, but who'd cut down a 35 Rem to do that? I guess you could rebarrel a 30/30, but I'd think it would probably be cheaper to mod the shell carrier and ream the chamber on a .357 Winchester '94.

The point was being able to just ream out the chamber to use .357 Maximum. Marlin doesn't chamber the 336 in .357 mag; rather they have (their version of) the 1894, which is a shrunken 336 action.

On the other hand, AFAIK when Winchester made their 1894 in .357 mag they used the regular sized reciever, which of course would have no problem handling the length of .357 Max because it was originally designed for .30-30-length cartridges.

Currently H&R makes a handi rifle in .357 mag. Have it reamed to 357 max. Mine was done by a wholesaler years ago. It shoots 357 mag well and 38 spec. also. I like the lyman 358242 in 92 gr. that I use as a mouse load. It dents a pop can before making a hole through it. The max. shell dumps deer at 180 yds. Have fun and bangaway.
