Shooting Asian Carp with Shotguns? We’re Game!

What could POSSIBLY go wrong there??? I'm afraid Bubba & buds would show up...

Up in VT we can take the carp any way we please already.

My dad slaughters them during bow season here in mississippi. Last year he shot many 40#++.

I rather prefer bow fishing. Carp ain't worth much, but it makes GREAT trotline bait! I used to shoot buffalo suckers in the river for that reason, bait my hooks. Haven't run lines in a while. Great way to catch catfish, though, and they are about as yummy as fish gets.

Mcgunner, some people eat them here as well as buffalo. My dad sells some to fund his bowfishing gear and he gives some away. He is extremely good at it. I do it too but not at the level as him and, a couple of his buddies. They have it worked out to a science.

Seems to me I remember hearing about how people in some parts of Europe would buy LIVE carp ,early Christmas Eve morning, keep it a bathtub until just before they prepared their Christmas Eve supper.It was considered a special treat.

Carp and suckers have "interstitial bones" or bones in the muscle. I've heard steaming the meat will soften these, but I don't wanna mess with it. Plenty of good fish to eat, don't need trash fish, but they do make good bait.

I've eaten gar. The meat is tough and similar to gator tail. I fry little strips like gator tail is done or grind it, season, and bread and fry into "gar balls". Those are good. Gar is the only fish I'd eat that I have bowfished for, but I figure flounder is legal to bowfish for. I've taken a lot with a gig, but never with a bow. It'd be point blank, no sights necessary, would actually get in the way.

When I was doing all that bow fishing, I shot a recurve instinctive, no sights, missed way more'n I hit. I have a PSE kingfisher recurve now and a hoyt compound. I really prefer the recurve as the draw is faster. Your shots are usually quick on gar as they come up to gobble air, not much time for the draw. Best time for gar is on a hot, windless day. The dissolved oxygen concentration gets down to 2 PPM, those gar have a "red body" in their swim bladders that absorbs oxygen from air that they come up to gulp, almost like a lung, but not nearly as efficient. It keeps 'em alive, though, and also makes 'em good targets when they come up for air.

For bowfishing with a compound , 40# draw is plenty. We don't eat those fish either.

Ya that lead shot on the water at $25 per shell can be an expensive day out hunting fish or waterfowl.

It's hard to believe that a state that will not allow law abiding citizens to legally carry a concealed weapon for protection, would endorse such a Bubba-Fest. Go figure...........

I've already got my gear loaded and waiting for a friend with a boat...

I have been thinking for a while that they could be "flushed" with remote control boats.
(They jump when a boat goes over them, apparently).

Yeah I believe those are the airborne monsters. The reason anti-gun Illinois is thinking about unleashing the shotguns is simply that this is a virulent invasive species that literally out-eats the native fish. They're like vacuum cleaners.
