cz thoughts - p06, sp-01, 97

Hi everyone, the purchase of a new handgun is in the near future andp as hoping to get some thoughts on cz's.

I like cz rifles and am thinking id like to get a cz handgun. This will be used primarily for target shooting. I currently have a Browning .22 buckmark and stoeger cougar in .40

Locally, I have been unable to find VERY few cz's, only the P06, which felt nice, but I'm not sure I want another .40. Also, I'm not sure i would want a shorter(height) gun like the P01.

Given all that, I'm thinking about either the 97 but have heard it is a large gun physically so that has me worried without being able to get my hands on one. That lead me to the sp-01, but its specifications show it being nearly as big and heavy as the 97.

What do people think, if I was comfy with the P06 do you think id be ok with either the 97 or sp-01?? how does the P01 compare to the standard 75?

Whatever you decide upon, buy it already tuned, from the CZ Custom Shop. (Their website is http://czcustom.com.)

The 97 is a marvelous gun, but has a big grip. You'll want to handle one before you buy. The P-06 is getting great reviews, but is substantially different than the other CZs.

The SP-01 comes in several forms, decocker or safety.

The biggest complaint about CZs, nowadays, is that the out-of-the-box trigger isn't as good as it used to be. Buying one from the CZ Custom shop costs a bit more, but since they'll ship right to your FFL, you're saving a good bit on the shipping costs you'd normally pay for a first-class action job, and you'll LOVE what you get.
 
I have owned a cz75b for many years. It is my favorite handgun to shoot. I don't have experience with the 97 but I do love the 75b. It is well machined and I suspect the 97 to be excellent as well.

How does the grip of the sp-01 compare to the 97? Cz site says it is wider 1.46 vs 1.4 inches for the 97?

The ergonomics on the SP-01 are awesome, the all steel version, Shadow or Tactical, is great on recoil. Trigger is......ok, but out of all the pistols at the end of the day my CZ gets the most rounds through it and the most attention from other shooters. And :O how can you call this ugly?!!?!? IMAG0286.jpg
 
No offense, but the fat nose on that gun is ugly, not to mention the mag base!:neener:

But if everyone like the same thing, the world would be a boring place!

I prefer the less ugly SA! But possibly hideous in your eyes...

My only CZ experience is with the 97bd. Its my favorite handgun that I own and the most accurate and softest shooting 45 I have fired.

No the 75B is traditionally a 9mm, but the same models can be had in .40, although the mag capacity is very limited for the .40 in a full size gun compared to a few other brands
 
The 97 grip is noticeably larger than the 75 grip. My hand isn't small, but I really wasn't comfortable with the 97 Grip. The similar Witness 45/10mm guns are noticeably smaller in the grip area. (I had a 97B, a Witness Sport Long Slide in .45, and a ASAI One Pro all at the same time -- and they all used the same mags. The 97B had the largest grip of the three.)

If you're serious about the 97B, you really need to try one, dry-fire it, etc.
 
I own the sp01 and the 97b. Both are super pistols. The grip isn't the issue for most people with the 97b, the trigger reach with a proper hold on the pistol is the issue. Many people that have shot my 97b have to grip "around the pistol" to put the trigger on the sweet spot on the finger in DA. S/a isnt so bad.

The sp01 or even the cz75 with a competition hammer and single action trigger will be on of the best shooting guns you have ever fired. If I were you I would go for the 75s and a bunch of ammo.
 
I have a CZ SP-01 Tactical (decocker) 9mm, CZ 75B 9mm, CZ 75B .40 S&W, and a CZ 97BD. I love them all, but the SP-01 is my favorite. It's the gun I choose to use when shooting action pistol competitions. I would recommend the non-decocker version, as the trigger is a little better. It is also easier to modify.

I love the 97BD too, but the grip is bigger than the SP-01. I have medium sized hands, but can handle it though. I just think the SP-01 is a more practical gun.

The SP-01 is hefty, especially older models. I love mine and have abused it since the day I bought it, it loves me all the more for it. The P06 is great and all, but who needs another .40? The 97 is great if your palm can be used as a serving platter, mine can not.

In my opinion, the CZ 75 is the 1911 of the east. It can be made to be a beautiful competition model or it can be a working man's arm. Your CZ 75, your choice.
 
Thanks again for all the help everyone. I think I've narrowed it to the 75 or sp-01. Now I just have to see if the lgs can get one.
 
Just buy the CZ on line from a reputable seller and have a FFL do a local transfer. That may be your LGS, or it may not. "Ordering" and paying up front will take months or more.
 
Personnel preference regarding looks aside, are there any negatives associated with the care/maintenance/durability of finish of polished stainless firearms?

I'm thinking of maybe going that route but wanted to get some feedback on the stainless because if they are more difficult to maintain and keep looking nice ill just go with the blue.

The high-gloss stainless models show scratches and marks more easily than do most finishes, but they can generally be polished out, easily. The matte finish is less "touchy" and there is a low gloss model, too, somewhere in the middle -- but finding the level of polish you want may take a while.

The only CZ model currently available in stainless is the 75B with manual safety, and that particular model is slightly different than the standard 75B -- with a reversible mag release and ambidextrous safeties. I don't think a decocker model is available. Nothing else is (or was) available in stainless, including none of the models you mentioned in your original message.

The satin nickel finish is very durable, as is the polycoat finish (which seems to get better with each passing year.)
 
Yeah, I am now considering the 75, and the ambidexterious safety would be nice as i am q left handed shooter.

I'm not too familiar with the decocker and thus think the manual safety is my preference. As also mentioned above, since I'm not planning on using this as a carry firearm, I'm considering going with the single action onoy (if I decide to forgoe the stainless). Thoughts on the sao?
 
The CZ 85B or CZ 85 Combat, have ambidextrous controls: slide release and safety (but not mag release.) The 85 Combat doesn't having the firing pin block, has an extended mag release, and an adjustable sight. It can be found in Nickel (I have one) and polycoat.

Later addition:

The SAO model has ambidextrous safeties... and if you're a lefty, that's a plus. Consider getting one from the CZ Custom Shop. You'll pay a bit more, but you will NOT regret the extra cost. (Let them do the trigger/action work.)

What are peoples thoughts on da/sa vs. the single action only? Since I won't be using to carry, would I be better off with the sao? I like it cosmetically a bit more than the 85 and have read that the trigger on the sao is maybe slightly better than the da/sa trigger out of the box.
