I just looked up the Smith and Wesson SD9 on their site and I was amazed to see they kit offered in to flavors. Standard capacity (16+1) and low capacity (10+1). Is that a new change? For the longest time, all pistol mags that hold around 15 or more rounds were called "high capacity" magazines, mostly by the media, in order to make it sound like 15 rounds was far too much for a normal person. But manufactures and stores said that too. Since when did S&W change over to the true correct definition, and call a 10 round mag "low", and 16 is "standard". it should have always been this way, but I appreciate them catching up. Is this another sign times are a changing? Or an I just late in noticing this?

Would a mod be so kind as to correct my typo in the title?

Shooter's definitions:

Low capacity = way too few
Standard capacity = not quite enough
High capacity = now we're getting there....

Joking aside, I agree the media overuse the term "high-capacity." The number of rounds that can fit in the full-size version of any semi-auto without having the magazine extend below the standard grip should be called "standard."

I think it's just finally a public recognition that the 10 rounders are designed for places with laws that require a magazine limit, and that it's High" for the high ethics of shooters elsewhere and "Low" for the low mental capacity of the lawmakers who believe 15 rounds makes a gun inherently more dangerous.

Hoplophobes, as Col. Jeff Cooper would call them. A person with an irrational fear of weapons.

Sig p226 TacOpps and CZ75 TS has changed the game. 20 shot capacity is the new standard.

Yep!

It's a great idea from a political marketing standpoint. Eventually people WILL push for another magazine capacity limit. Maybe they'll succeed - hopefully they won't. If the public is successfully convinced though of the "standard" capacity being 15-17 rounds, then it'll be a LOT harder for them to argue for 10 rounds again.

Don't get me wrong - I own a ton of magazines for various guns up to 30 rounds (and may well get a 100-round drum for my AR eventually). I don't want to see a mag ban at all, BUT, if it were to come to pass, I could tolerate a 17-round limit much easier than I could a 10-round.

Standard capacity (16+1) and low capacity (10+1).
Some states have stupid gun laws that limit standard capacity (16) magazines to a restricted (10 round) low capacity limit.

Manufactures have to offer both models in order to sell guns in some of the largest population states in the country.
Like California for instance.

Well I know why they manufacture magazines in 10rd capacities, and then mags that have more. I am speaking more to the change in terminology that seems to have taken place. Back in the day, 10 rounds was "standard" and even gun companies called their 15rd mags "high capacity". They played the media game. Now it seems that they've switched over to the logical naming system, where a 10 rd mag is "low" and a mag that fills the pistols magazine well is "standard". I'm glad that it's caught on. Now if we can just get the term "high capacity" out of the media...

"Standard Capacity" = what it was originally design to use.
"High Capacity" = more than the standard capacity.
"Low Capacity" = less than the standard capacity.

How many rounds determine what is "Standard Capacity" and "High Capacity" will vary depending on the firearm.

For example...
Colt M-1911A1 = 7 round is "standard capacity" and 10 rounds is "high capacity"
Glock 17 = 10 rounds is "low capacity", 17 rounds is "standard capacity" and 33 rounds is "high capacity"
