Might be a while though. Gotta go to Maryland (ugh) for a month for a temp job.
 
OEM grips (straight or curved) can be had for $18 at MidwayUSA.

3rd Gen Smiths are great guns and will only go up in value as the supply of police-trades dry up. Mags are still reasonably priced, too. Enjoy!
 
Actually the grips are the only thing that shows much wear. The gun itself appears to be in very good condition. Nice find.
 
Ditto what Onward said, that was a great price and these are steals these days...but as soon as the supply of police trade-ins dries up the prices will invariably go up. I've even been thinking of picking up a few more while they are readily available.
 
I have one just like it. The only thing to regret with one is if you sell it.
 
Okay, the grip was in much worse shape than I originally thought.
I was just fiddling with it and the right side completely cracked and fell off...

It's being held on with electrical tape right now... (which, I have to admit, feels pretty good in my hand)

Maybe I can make the shop owner order a new grip for me free of charge.
 
The grip looks as if it has been banged into a car door frame more than a few times. On earlier models, breaking the grip could render the gun inoperable due to releasing the tension on the mainspring, but this gun has been made well after that.
 
How do you remove the firing pin to clean it?

My wife bought me a NIB 5906 for Christmas. The original owner bought it in 1990 as a carry gun for his job as a cop. he was told he wasn't allowed to carry it so there is sat until this Christmas. I fired its first shots. Since then I bought a 3913. I would like to make sure it is cleaned up properly. They are both stellar shooters.
 
I too would like to know how to get the firing pin out.


Congrats to the OP on buying one of the best handguns ever made! I have a 4046 and let me tell you, it blows any plastic framed gun away!
 
I have the 39-2 predecessor to yours, and I LOVE IT!!!! Aside from updating the 40 year old springs, it has never needed anything, and has never skipped a beat. Kudos to you for your (newer) design.
 
Good old steel. Long live to the old wondernines :D. Congratulations, it looks really nice. I shot one of those once, and really liked it. A very pleasant to shoot pistol.
 
After playing with it some more, I have determined that the DA pull is buttery smooth, but the SA is gritty and breaks inconsistently...

Weird.
 
If you haven't done it yet use a good firearm spray cleaner and flush out the return spring channel particularly, along with the rest of the action. I used spray brake parts cleaner on mine. After the cleaner evaporates, use a good spray lubricant on all the moving parts in the frame. The cleaner should rinse out the old oil and any suspended grit. Lube it before you work the action. It should function smoother than what you have described. Synthetic motor oil will also penetrate pretty well.
 
I've blasted the guts out with Ballistol and lubed every moving part I could see and the action is as I described. Can't figure it out.

It's not really a problem though. It's not like it's going to be a target pistol...

It'll probably end up as a dedicated car and occasional range gun since I'll have little use for it as a carry piece once I get a Cz 75.

That's strange. 5906's have pretty good triggers, really. Mine has a very smooth light SA trigger. Shot back to back with my Sig 226 or FNX, my old school 5906 makes both of their triggers look bad.

W.E.G.'s pic reminded me - Are you all aware that there are pointed Q tips? I'd never seen them till recently. They're VERY helpful for cleaning firing pin/striker channels, especially the little opening through which the pin strikes the primer. Can't rmember where I got mine, but I'm sure walgreens has them. If not, you can get them here:
