I used to have a G19 for my CCW. In fact, it was my only gun for a while. I had it about a year before I got rid of it. I went through a litany of other guns including Ruger SP101, LCR, Sig P232, DB380 and now I have a Ruger LC9. Other than the old RTF that ate up my clothes and my flesh, I don't remember what else I disliked about the gun so much that I got rid of it. It wasn't the most accurate, but it was good enough for close in defense, and that after all is its real purpose. I am considering getting another one, a Gen 4 this time, but have this nagging feeling that there was a reason I get rid it it the first time, and it was more than the grip. I like that it is durable and holsters and other accessories are ubiquitous. But I also dislike the grip angle some, and that it is striker fired; no cocking back the hammer for a more precise single action shot like on a revolver or sig. I have $500 to spend on a medium sized (around G19 size) high capacity (more than my LC9) gun. For that money in my area my choices are G19 Gen 4, Sig Sp2022, CZ 75P07duty. I like all the platforms, they are all about the same size and all about the same price, with the Glock actually being the most expensive at exactly $500. I have never shot the CZ or the Sig, but I have shot many of their similar brother and sisters (Sig P226, P229 etc; CZ75B, and Phantom) So, any suggestions...??? Should I go back to the Glcok19 that I know, and trust and know I'll be able to find holsters and accessories for, or go to the heavier, larger but (for me) more accurate Sig or CZ???

For me, the issue with the G19 sized pistols was the grip length. I love my full sized Glocks, and I can even tolerate the G26 sized guns, but the mid size pistols just feel cramped. With a G26 I know my pinky is going to hang off the bottom and I accept it. The G19, on the other hand has a grip that is just long enough to get all three fingers on it, but just short enough that it doesn't feel natural. That may not make any sense, but it is the reason that I only own full-sized and mini Glocks and no 'tweeners.

If I was going to get a Sig for CCW, it would be a P229. That said, I love my Glock 19, but it has been replaced with my M&P9 FS as my main carry gun (when I can carry). I just prefer the ethos of the M&P over the Glock, and the sights settle back in target quicker (for me) with the M&P. The full size M&P is slightly larger than the Glock, but I don't notice it much when carrying IWB, and I don't notice it at all OWB.

All in all, I would take the Glock over any of your other choices. But again, that's just me. I think it is hard to beat a Glock 19/23 for a CCW gun.

My carry weapon is a G19...but at least consider a Sig P2340 or P2022 at that price point. Had a P2340 from my father for a while...balanced well, lighter than a 229 (which I also have), but accurate.

Last week I went to buy a G19 but decided on a G23 instead.

The reason; I already have a G26 and the G23 is essentially the same gun as a G19 but chambered in a .40 with the ability to simply drop in a 9mm conversion barrel or a stock .357 barrel. Basically 3 guns in 1.

Why not? Because there are so many better options available and you've named a few of them. If you have to settle for a gLoCk avoid the Gen 4 crap they put out. It has been nothing but problems, from what I have read. But I won't own a gLoCk so what do I know?

That pretty much sums it up for me too. Saved me a lot of typing. :)

You need a Glock and 1911 in your collection. No doubt about it.

I picked the Glock 23 over the 19. I try to pack as much power as I can fit into what ever size frame I feel like carrying.

The Gen4 problems were limited to certain parts in certain models. If you get a bad one, Glock rectifies it in a matter of days and the fixed guns have been flawless from what I've read.

Of course, my personal experience with the Gen4 has been limited to only 675 rounds through my G23, but so far so good. Love my Glocks. They go bang every time...

I believe that was predominately the spring. They used the same spring in the G23 as they did in the G19 and it caused some issues with certain ammo. My g/f has one and even though her's didn't have any issues, Glock replaced the spring.

The double buffer recoil spring caused problems in the Gen 4 Glock 17/19 because it was too stiff to cycle 9mm rounds reliably (I believe). But it all been ironed out now I think.

While it probably won't hurt the pistol to do as you describe, you'll also need to swap out the ejector and magazine (.40/9mm) if you want it to be as reliable as possible.

Thanks for the imput. I don't want a G23 because I don't want .40SW. For one, I don't like the round, I find it "snappier" than 9mm, I get less capasity than 9mm in the same size package, and I don't want to add another caliber to my arsenal. I would much prefer the Sig P229 but they go for the $750 and up price range. I may own a 1911 some day, but right now, with limited money, I have to prioritize. The 1911 is a want, a fun gun, not a working gun for me. And the ones that I would want carry a $1600+ tag. I have no worries about the Gen 4 glocks. I shot 300 rounds through a rental Gen 4 19 last week with only one misfire, and that was a bad primer (ammo prob, not the gun).

This!

I always thought Glocks didn't fit my hand, until I tried a G17. Up until then it was all 19s & 23s. I think the shorter grip puts the Glock "hump" in the exact wrong spot on my palm, and it just doesn't feel right. The first time I picked up a 17, I was pretty surprised.

But that's just me. Plenty of folks out there carry and get along with their 19's just fine.

I guess I'm an outlier on this one, but I've always thought the G19/G23s were about the perfect size, big enough to be very controllable, but not so big that there is a bunch of unoccupied grip hanging out below my hand.

There are many fine pistols on the market, but if you're looking for a working gun, and the Glock fits your hand, I really don't see that any of the other similarly priced brands have any ground breaking advantages over the Glock.

I like interesting pistols as much as the next guy, but I want my go-to pistol to be common to the point of boredom. I do not want to worry about getting dings, scratches or wear on my go-to pistol. I want parts to be cheap and plentiful, I want magazines and sights to be available everywhere. If something happens to my go-to pistol, I want to be able to stop by any gun store, replace it with an exact copy and be back in business.

Glocks fit my requirements for a go-to pistol, they may or may not fit your's.

I would think that after the 300 rounds you shot last week, you would probably remember if the Glock had any traits that were particularly annoying to you.

I now have 550 rounds through the G19 Gen 4 I purchased a month or so ago. I've only had 2 malfunctions so far, both happened on the very first magazine I put through the gun. My only complaint has been the irritation to my trigger finger after 200 or so rounds (I posted a thread about it) but other than that, nothing but a great shooting handgun. Good luck!

You might want to consider the M&P models as well.

As for the ability to have an exernal hammer to cock for precise single action shooting, there is no advantage in a defensive scenario. I have yet to see a LEO qualification course that calls for single action, cocked revolver fire.

As for Glock, I really like my Gen 4 G34. I have wanted one for years and finally have one. My G34 also has the updated recoil spring assy.

I find the "compact" 19/23 size to be a near-perfect combination of controllability and concealability. Used to have a G23. Regret selling it (sold most of my firearms when I enlisted). Would probably buy a G19.

I had a Gen3 Glock 19 that I sometimes regret selling. I had the same issue as the others when it comes to the feel of the grip in my hands. It just didn't feel right. I ended up getting an M&P in the 9mm and love it. With that said, my Gen4 G26 is my favorite auto. Never had an issue with it and it's one of my most accurate guns (in my hands). It makes me think I should try out a Gen4 19. For what it's worth, I shoot my M&P with the small grip insert and I don't have the bigger straps on the G26.

FWIW, when I got my Gen3 G19 it too felt very..."unnatural" compared to my SigPRO 2340. I felt like I had to hold the pistol muzzle-down in order for it to shoot straight.

After about 300 rounds, I adjusted and today it doesn't feel anything but natural.

...not 1911 natural, mind you, but very very "normal".

after 100 rounds gotta put a bandaid on trigger finger cause of frame rub, don't happen with the 17

It's the serrated "target" trigger on the smaller Glocks, which are added for import points. I had the same problem by replacing the trigger assembly with one for the G17. $15 part and 10 minutes of my time.

I think I am going to go ahead and get the Gen 4 G19. I am getting it for $50+ under the average going rate, and it comes with 3 mags, so that saves some money there too. I still have a SERPA holster left over from my last one, though none for conealment. I am thinking a Crossbreed Supertuck??? Anyone else have an opinion on that holster for this gun? Will it work well for a 5'7" 165lbs guy?

WOW, just hijacked my own thread!!!

Congrats on the self hijack... I love my g23... now for the hijack... I love the galco summer comfort for my fnp40, so I got a similar design, but the suede is out, so it stays put better, for my g23. I'd have to look to see who made it but I got it at CTD. These are IWB and a real sturdy opening, so re-holstering is 0 problem!

Ok, I guess my point is, being the same frame as the 19, the fit and size is very nice :D
