Hey guys, gotta question for your shared experience, about buying the M24 SWS from Remington. Right now they have a program where they're rebuilding retired M24's and selling them to restricted groups, and I'm lucky enough to be in one of the groups. They are $3500, which seems to be a pretty great deal. Part of the deal is that you sign a contract not to sell it within the next year, which won't be a problem because I look forward to spending lots of personal time with the rifle.

My question is: in a few years, if I need to sell it, will it still be worth $3500 or more at resell? (i.e. can I call it an "investment")

Just trying to justify spending that much cash on a rifle!

I don't see them having any collector value to the military collectors because they come with a new receiver, new barrel and new trigger group. And possibly new iron sights as well.

But you get an original stock.

www.remingtonmilitary.com/Firearms/Sniper Rifles/M24-Rebuild.aspx

Each system includes the following;
 1x M24 with a new M24 receiver, barrel and fire control
 Used optics and mounts
 Used stock and accompanying components
 Used cases
 New or used accessories (tools, iron sights, etc)
o NOTE – This weapon is built from a combination of new and used parts, however each weapon is 100% tested and functional. Some accessories MAY NOT be present due to unavailability from the US Government

I'd agree, while the "new" parts might be good from a performance standpoint, not sure it would be helpful as far as collector value. Price seems kinda high to me. You can get a darn nice custom rifle for $3500.

Honestly, if I had the chance I would probably take it. Yes, there are custom rifles out at that price point, but I just have a thing for the M24.......I'll leave it at that ;)

I think it's price will stay fairly stable around the $3,500 range, if you are selling to a private seller, but it might drop a little bit.

Rebuilding? Let's see, new barrel, receiver and trigger group?

Sounds like they're just re-gunning the accessory package.

"Yessir, that there is George Washington's original axe that he used to chop the cherry tree down. Now the head's been replaced twice and it's had three new handles but it's sure 'nuff Goerge Washington's axe! See the wedge? That's original."

Yeah I suppose ya'll are right, from a collector's standpoint they won't really be collectible because they're basically completely rebuilt. But a new one from Remington is at least $7000. I was originally thinking that it would be easy to play with it for a year and then flip it for a few grand, but if the market is saturated with rebuilds, I guess I'll have to keep it in the safe for myself .

GA Precision will build you one for a lot less money that's equal to whatever Remington can build.

Can't see paying $7,000 or even $3,500 for a Remington.

The market won't be saturated with them in a year, they are only making 230 for all of 2012.

This is more than a bone-stock Remington....I would guess that it could more than compete with a GA precision
And this SWS comes with a whole lot that a GA precision rifle will not

Ragsdale, I just checked out GA Precision and their M24 clone is almost $3500 for just the rifle, with milspec optics and the rest of the milspec accessories I can see that value jumping up to at least $5500. Still a better price than 7 grand, but for the 3 1/2 price I'd want the "US M24" rollmark. Just the cool factor I guess.

But this is just me trying to justify this purchase as an investment instead of just a toy!

A $3500 gap rifle or any custom builder and a $3500 remington rifle isn't in the same class. If you want a roll mark by all means get the rebuild it's your money and I'm all for free spending.

nothing wrong with gap but you are a,lso paying for a rollmark, there are plenty of great smiths that will put together a finely built and shooting rifle for less

I'd get it just for the history behind it. Think about it guys, some army sniper trusted his life to that gun (well, parts of that gun). He took the rifle with him through all his travels in Iraq or Afghanistan, and that rifle is probably responsible for saving a whole bunch of soldiers lives.

That's why I said any custom builder. I personally use William Roscoe of LA precision. All of his rifles carry a 1/4" guarantee. Remington actions are good don't get me wrong, but a custom builder will true the action, install a match barrel, and hold a tighter tolerance than a factory remington. BTW GAP is in Kansas not Georgia.

End of the day it's still a factory rifle with a few upgrades.

But as already pointed out in this thread GA Precision makes and M24 clone to the exact specifications of the US Army M24, using the exact same components....and it costs more money. So...end of the day it is just a factory rifle assembled by someone other than Remington

About the only thing you can say is that GA Precision will make it right if it doesn't shoot right....but this thread seems to be about the novelty of having an original M24, not having the best shooting rifle for the money.

Indeed, having the original M24 novelty is a big motivating factor.

Thanks for your input ya'll!

If it's what tickles your toes, go for it.

As a side benefit, you will also have the prestige of being one of the "only ones" who are special enough for them to sell this to.

Sorry, it just rubs me the wrong way when companies pull stunts like this. I guess I don't like those who encourage elitist attitudes, especially among people whose salaries I'm paying. It reminds me of the attitude a lot of gun control proponents have.

Henschman- The military pays taxes too, as long as we aren't in a combat zone.

I guess I don't like those who discourage elitist attitudes, especially among people who think they're paying my salary. ;)

As for my .02 - I think the weapon systems should have been offered first to the users at the reduced "surplus" cost that Remington is paying for the parts.

So let's look into this. A weapons system gets specified, designed, accepted and delivered at a freakishly high cost to the taxpayers (I've seen the unit costs on our own M-24 systems after losing one of the iron sight sets).
Now. it sits gaining little attention or value in a time of relative peace.
What Ho - conflicts arise, front line users gain notoriety (much deserved) in their exploits with this system. News items, U tube and word of mouth underline the system, users and missions performed.
This system gets in some cases used to the point of failure/replacement and the Army as well looks to upgrade the entire weapons system anyhow.
Now Remington steps in, buys up the surplus accessories and repackages them with new rifles which were in no way connected to the missions performed yet clouds things in terms like re-built.

Yeah... And Orange County Choppers builds Harley Davidson's

I'd sure like to see the actual ("elite" nonetheless) Operators have gotten a shot (NPI) at these first rather than corporate hacks and dealers.

I agree with Todd that at least these aren't all going to high-$$ TACTICOOL dealers to mark up and display in their stores, and peddle to guys with fat bank accounts. To a lot of the current qualified "Category 1" potential buyers, $3500 is no joke, even if it is for a serious rifle package. I would fall into Cat 2, and i for sure can't swing that unless it's Bonus time haha.
