Next gun purchase will be an AR and I think I'd like one with MOE stock, handguard, grip, etc..... There is a chance it would occasionally be used to hunt predators here in MN. I figured the plastic would be nicer on the hands in cold weather plus I think the MOE looks cool. I dont really think I'll ever trick it out so not much need for all the rails.

I'm a hard core shopper and never buy anything unless I think I'm getting the absoulte best price around.

What are some good options in the 7-9 hundred $ range?

Palmetto State Armory has some good rifles. I have one of their 20 inch rifles. Shoots great no problems, only thing is when I ordered mine it took a bit to get to me ( about 1 month, but it was right in November, so they holiday rush could have already started. Hope you get what you're looking for. They offer standard furniture or more and I think even rails.

Not sure if you are looking for a M4 style rifle or a 20incher. Either way though I think you'd be happy with them. I was out the door after shipping & transfer fees on the lower, for only 710 bucks. I even opted to purchase their 65 dollar detachable carry handle. So you can for sure get one cheaper. All in all I think through my experience they are a real solid manufacture for under 1k. Mine also costed more since I opted to get a hammer forged barrel so that added a little more.

Good luck!

PSA looks reasonable.

I'd like a 16" tube.

Is there any advantage to a 223 wylde chamber? It was my understanding that you could fire 223 rounds from a 5.56 NATO chamber anyways so what is the point or advantage of the wylde chamber?

Also I do not want that "notch" in the barrel. I'm assuming that was designed to hang a gernade launcher or something. Obviously wont be doing that and I think it looks stupid.

PSA offers in 5.56 I believe, haven't looked ( mine is chambered in 5.56)
I think the Wylde chambering also allows you to fire commercial 5.56 & .223 not sure if it has an advantage over the 5.56 chambers.

ha, ya the notched barrels pfft. Might be hard to find one that's not notched in 16" form, since it seems everyone is trying to have their own M4 look a like. lol

this is a quote from the internet.

" The military round (5.56) uses a thicker brass and has slightly more powder which equals a faster bullet than does the .223 Now having said that, it is perfectrly alright to fire .223 in your 5.56 ar. but in an AR chambered for .223. you can have problems with the primers backing out when shooting 5.56 ammo in it. Also, the chamber on the .223 AR15 is slightly tighter normally and this can cause some failure to extract problems, and broken shells stuck in the chamber, which requires a special broken shell extractor to remove without damaging the chamber. On some of the .223 caliber AR's there are a few in that handle the 5.56 just fine. But odds are that you will have some kind of problem with a new one in .223. so, stick with the 5.56 chambered AR and then don't worry about shooting either one in it."

.223 Wylde is different than the .223 chamber. .223 Wylde is an intermediate chamber, between 5.56 and .223. The wylde chamber safely shoots 5.56 ammo. I have both chambers. 5.56 has no issue in my wylde chamber AR.

PSE is good stuff. Warning, sometimes their shipping is very slow.

I just bought the AR I wanted and swapped out the furniture (MOE handguard, stock, grip and trigger guard) for another $100.00 from Brownell's.

got a MOE rifle kit from Palmetto State, 16" 5.56 Mid Length Gas, Chrome lined etc (not stepped barrel). Could not be happier. Works beautifully.

MOE furniture as OE option? Neva'h been done before, until Red Jacket! ;)

Kidding, but I have seen them on store shelves now and it doesn't look like a bad gun, but I would look into the PSA first, especially after looking at the price tags.

palmetto state armory, all milspec and they have buildkits that include all MOE furniture, these will be your absolute best bang for your buck

The Sig sauer m400 enhanced model can be had in the mid 900 dollar range. They have a bad rap on some forums, but I've ran mine hard since I bought it and haven't had any trouble at all. It's a fun accurate shooter.

My next purchase will be an AR-15. I've looked at all of the well known brands and I'm really interested in the S&W M&P sport. It has a 1:8 twist and is very reasonably priced, but not chrome lined...found one last night at the big (expensive) local gun shop for only $699. I just looked at this rifle again and it's chambered for 5.56, when what I want is 5.56/.223. In practical terms, what's the difference? What I'm most interested in is the price and availability of each round. Also, there's a smaller gun shop that I go to sometimes and he was trying to talk me into a CMMG 1:9 chrome lined. I've heard that although chrome lined barrels are easier to clean, unless you're intending to fire thousands and thousands of rounds, you don't really need a chrome lined barrel. Thoughts? Recommendations? Also, what about twist? It seems that a 1:8 would be the best (most versatile), but hardly anyone makes them which tells me that I'm probably missing something. Also, what about various piston systems? Could someone educate me? Thanks in advance!

You should get the very best deal you can find on a stripped lower receiver, and then get a "rifle kit" from PSA with whatever setup you want. You can select different furniture for each kit, so just choose the MOE option for stock, handguards, trigger guard, and pistol grip in the little dropdown menu. You might want to throw an AR-15 wrench in the shopping basket with the build kit, so you can put the stock on easily yourself. You have to put the lower receiver together yourself if you do it this way, but it's not very hard, and it is cheaper than buying a whole rifle. There are plenty of guides online that will walk you through it.

If you want a 16", I would recommend one of the mid-length ones... especially since you don't want the M-4 style turned down barrel. I would get either the mid length chrome lined, or the mid length dissipator... which is handy because those are both in stock right now on their site! The dissipator is cool because you have rifle-length sight radius and handguard length, but with the shorter barrel.

You should be able to get it all together for somewhere around $700.

There is a ton of information available regarding your questions. In fact, I'm pretty sure there is a thread here regarding the M&P Sport that will answer many of your questions.

Found it: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=646022

I would ask what is the intended use of your rifle? The answer may determine which barrel (chrome or not) and twist. The Sport has a melonite barrel and may not be as durable as a chrome lined barrel. However, we're talking tens of thousands of rounds through either before you actually wear it out.

Regarding your question about the 556 chamber - it is perfectly OK to shoot either 556 or 223 out of a barrel chambered for 556. It is most definitely NOT advised (and is dangerous) to shoot 556 out of a rifle marked 223.

I REALLY like the MOE hand guards.

Course with a LaRue I wonder if it would be like putting Walmart Tires on a Ferrari.

i got my colt 6920 with MOE furniture(stock, grip, trigger guard and handguard) from the factory for $999 in Sportsman warehouse last January.
