Sounds like some kind of custom made jobbie from the 1930's.

That wasn't mass produced, or even prototyped. That was a completely custom job done for Nelson.

seems like I read on here a while back that some gunsmith working for the mafia made several of those for them. Any truth to that? I bet they're worth a fortune as collector's items now.

you didnt happen to be watching that top gun fights with will hayden and rich wyatt too ? Was a decent show...rich spoke little enough that it was watchable...the history segments were kinda neat...not enough shooting for a gun show lol

The FA 1911 was awesome!!!! Too bad Rich Wyatt and Will Hayden are full of hot air and annoying as all get out. Would of been cool if it was hosted by Joe Montoya!

That show was so full of mistakes & misinformation it was laughable.

Come on!
A double-action Colt single-action they showed several times during scene changes.

700 rounds per minute rate of fire with a standard 1911, not the full auto one.

The U.S. 1917 Enfield photo that was of a British SMLE Enfield.

Wills 30-round? 1911 magazine that went on, and On, and ON some more before he finally hit some of the targets.

And too many more to list.

I could have sworn that I read Colt had experimented with full-auto 1911's in the late 40's.

They probably experimented with them way before that to figure out what Dillenger and Baby Face Nelson's gunsmiths were doing.

Both Star and Astra at one time made a select fire sorta-1911 look alike too.

I have fired the Star pistol (in 9mm) as well as both a Mauser Schnellfeuer and the Astra (902?) and concluded that even with a shoulder stock they are just about worthless. I suppose someone will claim to have fired one or all of them and gotten half-inch groups at 100 yards for the full magazine, off hand, but it wasn't me. I got the first round where I wanted it; the rest presumably went somewhere on earth as escape velocity was not exceeded, but I couldn't tell where.

Reportedly, the gangsters who had those guns made up used them more for psychological effect than practicality. I am pretty sure that if I were a bank teller and one morning someone came in and ripped off 10 or 20 shots full auto, it would get my attention very quickly, and I would not be about to tell the gentleman who was holding the gun that he had to fill out a withdrawal slip.

It looks like the old-time gangsters had a flair for the tacticool, even way back when. I guess it never really goes out of style. People have been making their weapons "better" and more "tactical" since the first caveman started sharpening a stick.

It would be amusing to see what Baby Face Nelson, Clyde Barrow, and other infamous desperadoes would carry if they were given access to the modern selection of high speed mall ninja accessories.
Well, maybe not amusing if you were getting robbed, but this is an idle thought experiment.

I'm guessing it would be all flash. Probably some kind of M4 supershort auto with fancy grips, lights, lasers, and all kinds of other holographic tactical accessories. I bet those guys would have loved that sort of thing.

That was me and it was closer to 1/4 inch groups

Aside from fiction, full auto handguns just don't do it for me though I'd like to shoot one given the chance. I'd rather have a subgun like the Kriss Super V.

That 1911 is something crazy. I like it.

I had the opportunity to fire a Beretta 93R, with the stock attached. It was extremely controllable with the 3 round burst. It very easily sends a lot of lead downrange, accurately at 25 yards.
