"CBS Sunday Morning" 3/18 on Glock

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This Sunday, the newsmagazine "CBS Sunday Morning" (http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/sunday/main3445.shtml) will air an extended segment on Glock -- the pistol, the company, and the man behind them -- based in part on my new book, GLOCK: The Rise of America's Gun (www.glockthebook.com). Anthony Mason, CBS's Senior Correspondent for Business and Economics, reported the piece. He attended SHOT Show, did some shooting with a Glock, and interviewed me. How do you think the network will handle the issue?

We shall see Sunday morning!

All best,
Paul Barrett

I think a lot of news companies are having to "save face" and portray guns in a somewhat positive way or at the very least portray them from a purely curious way due to changing public opinion on them.

No one can deny the increase in CCW permits and ownership (though some campaigns like to down play how many actual new first time owners there are). If they try to play the neutral game, they'll stick to law enforcement usage and such. It'll be interesting. I've seen several interviews with you and listened to one on NPR, and though the newscasters may not have their facts all straight, I don't think an interview I've seen yet with you was portrayed negatively. Keep up the good work.

Counting on the fact that the man has actually shot a gun and realized that it didn't turn him into a blood thirsty monster, I think he may give a fair review, maybe even favorable. Still, no way to know until it airs. I look forward to hearing what they have to say on it.

I agree that, with a couple of unimportant exceptions, the interviews I've done to promote GLOCK: The Rise of America's Gun have been fair and down-the-middle.

Thank you for your good words.

I thought the NPR podcast was pretty damn good listening and very interesting indeed. It amazes me that any anti gun or anti hunting organizations make ANY traction when every other TV show is a gun/hunting related show it seems. It is almost like America has "found" itself on TV this past 5 years. Good work to all, not keep it up!!

I'm sure CBS will give a fair & balanced portrayal on gun issues as they have always done. Don't get your hopes up. Even if the interview went well you can do a lot in the editing room with voiceovers and b-roll.

I think most media outlets(and the Democratic politicians they generally support) realize they are fighting a losing battle in their efforts to sway public opinion against firearms. Their efforts in the nineties cost the Democrats dearly and to this day gun owners are on heightened alert for any negative portrayals in the media or proposed legal restrictions on ownership. The new acceptance may just be a way to eliminate a liability for candidates and improve their electoral success.

Paul, I just finished reading your book GLOCK today.... I thought it was very well written... easy to follow the characters and man, what an interesting story... from curtain rods to top dog in handguns... embezzlement, attempted murder by ex French foreign legion... TheHighRoad.com mentioned as making a difference in people losing their jobs... I heard the NPR interview as well and it made me interested enough to learn about the man and company that invented the gun I carry for self defense everyday.

Paul, I will try to pick up a copy this week. I have seen many nice reviews of it.

I am sure you get enough suggestions, but do one on Bill Ruger. I am interested in a good unbaised bio on him

I would look for major emphasis on the recent conviction of ex executives Jannuzzo and Manown on racketeering charges. Somehow it will imply that those men represent the morals of Glock or firearm manufacturers and owners in general.

Indeed. Guns are experiencing a heck of a popularity spike right now - and in the mainstream. Just look at the TV shows out: Top Shot, Top Guns, Hot Shots, American Guns, Sons of Guns, etc.

Go to any local competitive shooting groups (USPSA, IDPA, etc) and membership/interest has largely exploded recently. Gun sales and ownership have been steadily rising over the last decade.

In short, to a large degree they simply can't run their old "Guns are mad, mmmkay." pieces because the majority of the population is giving them the raised eyebrow.

I don't know how much CBS will focus on Jannuzzo, Manown, etc. However, I think it is fair to raise the question of how this company - Glock - has succeeded commercially even though its management has been characterized by a high degree of chaos for many years. Let us not forget that the man Gaston Glock personally hired to set up his network of shell companies later tried to have Herr Glock whacked in an underground parking garage in Luxembourg. Motive: The boss had discovered that the financier had set up a few extra shell companies into which he was siphoning Glock corporate money for his own use. Anyway, my point is that Glock GmbH, Glock Inc., and the rest of the empire has been characterized by a high degree of intrigue and more than a little wrongdoing by senior executives. I don't think that's a comment on the gun business in general, but it does say something about the corporate personality of Glock. More on all of this in my book, GLOCK: The Rise of America's Gun.

Glocks were the first stone cold reliable, durable semis. They are a notch above other pistols like the 1911,S&W 59,Browning HiPower. They were cheap I think my first Glock 17 was $375.I took my first sip of the Glock koolaid in 1990.

Internal Glock politics have no effect of the guns popularity.

I picked up the book a few days ago and look forward to reading it. I love the main stream exposure, educating those who don't shoot.

Mr Barrett, I'm curious about how you chose the title for your book?
Glock became Glock because it succeeded in America. It succeeded in America because it played into American needs and tastes. It became an unlikely winner in the marketplace and an icon in American popular culture (movies, tv, rap music, crime novels, you name it). It became America's (adopted) gun, the same way Arnold the S. became America's (adopted) action hero. Plus - the title provokes! It causes people to ask, how can an Austrian-made pistol be "America's Gun"? If you read the book, I think you'll be convinced. Thanks for your interest! All best, Paul Barrett www.glockthebook.com

Blackhawk30 - I agree. If anything, the intrigue that characterizes Glock's internal workings only adds to the company's dark glamor. Thanks for your thoughts!
