do you keep for:

your primary defensive rifle

primary defensive handgun(ccw)

2nd defensive handgun(hd in my case)

i have 12 loaded mags for my wasr 10

3 spares for 1911

1 spare for my p95

i feel like im good for rifle but want lots more handgun mags

how many do you keep loaded that you dont carry and how do you store them?(my ak mags take up a few drawers in the top of my toolbox. prolly need to look for a dedicated gun toolbox.)

One loaded each for my edc 9mm and 1911. None for my rifles since I live in a congested area and rifles for defense don't make sense to me.

I keep one in my Ruger LC9 in my nightstand, which is my CCW and my home pistol, with 2 additional loaded magazines. Don't have a rifle I use for home defense, though I do keep 10 stripper clips with 10 rounds of 7.62x39 on them in the gun safe with the SKS, but again, that's not really it's intention, just ready to take when going shooting.
I do however have a Mossberg 500A that I keep with a tube full of 3" Magnum 00 buck in it near my bed.

I don't have a rifle yet, and my shotgun is a tube magazine so I can't have spares.

I have a single spare for my LCP and a speedloader ready for my SP101. My XDm has 5 spares. I have 3 magazines each between the 11-round compact and 16-round full mags, total 6 (so 5 spares).

When I do get a rifle, I'll try to have a few spares.

None for my rifles since I live in a congested area and rifles for defense don't make sense to me.

The higher velocity allows for better control over what happens to the bullet. Rifle bullets designed for HD are actually less likely to overpenetrate than a shotgun or a handgun. Hollow point handgun rounds are actually the worst at overpenetrating through drywall, because the hollowpoint clogs up and fails to expand, thus penetrating like an FMJ.

I keep one loaded mag in my carry gun (Ruger LCP). At home I keep a S&W Mod 64 with a loaded cylinder.

None of the other guns or mags stay loaded.

As far of number of mags actually owned but not loaded, it varies. Some I only have a single mag for (my Makarov). Most of the handguns have at least 2 though and several that I shoot more frequently (my Glock, my M&P, my Walther P-1, and my Ruger P95) have between 5 and 8 each.

I think I've got 6 or 7 for the AR15.

I only keep 2 loaded mags for my sidearms, 1 in the gun and a spare. Same with my Mini 14 and ARs. 99% of the time a malfunction is mag related or can be corrected with a mag change.

How many loaded mags?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

do you keep for:

your primary defensive rifle

100 FAL mags-2000 rounds

primary defensive handgun(ccw)

3 mags-45 rounds

2nd defensive handgun(hd in my case)

Im my case, the back up is the M16. 100 mags-3000 rounds.

The above in red is what is close by.

Two spares for my 1911, two for my HiPoint 4595, all I can find for my M&P 15. Really, if I get to the second mag on the 1911, we're going mobile...

3 for each including my AR. Loaded. My pocket pistol, "bug" just 2, it's really for emergencys. I do have 2, 33 round for my 2 glocks aside from the 3, those are loaded also.

Err, umm ... so in a firefight how many mags do you think you could consume before the Bad Guys got YOU?

Surely in a Bad Situation only a few vital seconds would count - possibly 2 or 3 mags max?

Or have I misunderstood something about the US threat environment?

Or have I misunderstood something about the US threat environment?

No, but the outliers appear to be the high count instead of the +1-+3 posts.

For people that go to the range it is often easier to load magazines in their "spare" time instead of at the range (considering the cost of the range who wants to waste time loading magazines on the clock).

5 for my SW40VE
2 for my P95 because I just got it recently and haven't picked up more
1-10 round and 3 30 round for my Saiga in 7.62x39, just ordered some more.

Readily available I keep the following...

AR15 magazines - 6 - 30 rounders

CCW Glock - 1 in it and one spare close by

HD Sig Sauer - 1 in it and one spare close by

HD shotgun I'd say doesn't apply since its a Win 1300 (tube fed)

Of course, put away I have many more magazines. These mentioned are readily available. My theory is that I have the pistols at home to "fight to my rifle/shotgun" as some would say, if needed. If you need more than that, you're just one man in most cases and the force is much greater than you to begin with. IMO the amounts mentioned above should dispatch any average threat.
