I have an option to buy a Colt 1991A1 .38 Super. My thoughts are to buy a 9mm barrel and use the pistol in both calibers for personal use and as a $10 Rental for our indoor gun range. (Customers could choose which caliber)

It is very rare that I buy a NEW gun to use as a shooter and when the opportunity presents itself I feel obligated to keep a detailed history on its performance. THR seems to be a great way to keep track since I can access the thread from any computer and the data provided can be a useful tool for members looking to buy.

Would publicly testing another Colt (albeit a 1991 Series) be a waste of time for the members here? Part of me wonders whether an RIA would be more useful since more are sold, but I tried a thread on a Taurus PT1911 9mm a year ago but ended up selling it.. For the work involved in tracking a pistols life, I'd rather get one I'm likely to keep. Who knows..

Handloading the Super costs about the same as the 9mm, but you can also shoot selected 357mag bullets like the 125/140gr XTPs.

My Colt has a lot of holster wear and its performance on four legged vermin has been hammer of Thor.
 
The 9 MM barrel took a bit of fitting to make it feed cleanly. But it is sweet to shoot!!!! I got a cheapie barrel from SARCO.. And the ammo is a lot cheaper!!!! All it took was a barrel change..

The two mags on the left are Super .38s with a Super round and a 9 MM round.

The mag on the right is a 9 MM mag and you can see the spacer in the rear..

How well does the .38 Super extractor work on the 9mm?

Or do you change the extractor as well....

I'd think with .012 difference in the rim dia it'd chuck the looser fitting 9mm brass right at your face.

I'd be interested; a Colt .38 Super is something I think I might like to own one day.
 
There is a LW Commander 9mm w/38 super barrel on randgfirearms.com go to his pistol section and then click on his Gunbroker link. I have been buying from this guy for over 30 years.
 
The 38 super is my favorite round. It's does everything the 45 acp and more. Stronger than a 9mm but not as strong as the 10mm, not as snappy either. Ammo is expensive, but you can always get a 9mm barrel for range use as you suggested. Reloading for the 38 super is also very interesting to say the least.
 
i have 4 Super's.....2 LW Commanders and 2 Governments....can't comment on the 9mm but the super is a great all around round that's if you reload.....

This is one of several threads which have the words "round count" in the title. What are folks referring to with this phrase? I'm not seeing it pertaining to number of rounds fired in some of the threads.
Not criticizing - not a statement - sincerely curious.

Oh, and I have a Colt Series 80 9x23 with factory .38 Super conversion so I love threads like this and this one in particular right now as I keep getting closer to popping that first round outa the 9x23 each time I read one of these Super/9mm threads.
 
Todd, "Round Count" does refer to the number of rounds down-pipe. In the case of my thread on the Colt XSE pistols... I do a lot of other yapping too... the the "count" is there.

Damn nice pistols you got folks!

I think I get it. You are going to buy the mentioned pistol and maintain this thread as a round count sort of affair.

Here's my 9x23/.38 Super. Even thought the box notes it as both calibers, it is unfortunately not noted on the pistol except the stamping on the barrel shrouds. I'd love to have it marked as either caliber as some of the posted pistols are. Maybe after I get rid of all the plastic components Colt shipped this rascal with.

That is one good looking pistola!!!!!!
 
Here is the chamber of the 9 MM in its final iteration. Not very pretty, however it works and feeds just fine with no evidence of overpressure even with some pretty hot rounds!!! I have put a couple thousands of 9 MM through it!! I have some Swedish WW II Sub Gun ammo that is HOT, and it ate it right up!!

I got the cheapy barrel from SARCO. I think I paid $40.00 bucks for it...

I bought a 1970 dob 9mm Commander a few months ago. It WOULD NOT extract. Colt and some other manufacturers show only a COMMANDER extractor. However, Midway carries a Les Baer 9mm/38 Super extractor and a .45 ACP. I bought the 9mm/38 Super and after a couple of bends to tweak it, it has ripped of about 700 rounds without a hitch.
Recently added a 38 Super barrel assembly and it has not missed a lick extracting those either. Knowledgable Super shooters on another forum had said the extractor was the same for the 9 and 38.

My experience exactly. I have owned two Supers that I have fitted 9 MM barrels to and both extractors worked fine. I had a pre Series 70 .45 that I put a 9MM slide on and the .45 ejector actually worked OK also...

BTW, I lived in Azle for many years....
